BACKGROUND: Glucocorticoids (GCs) are generally envisioned as immunosuppressive, but in conditions such as rosacea and perioral dermatitis they can lead to increased skin inflammation. In lung epithelia, GCs promote expression of the proinflammatory cytokine CCL20, which contributes to steroid-resistant asthma. In the skin, CCL20 stimulates inflammation by recruiting T helper 17 T lymphocytes and dendritic cells, and is elevated in papulopustular rosacea.
OBJECTIVES: To understand if, and how, GCs affect CCL20 expression in human keratinocytes. CCL20 expression was assessed by quantitative re

UNLABELLED: Topical corticosteroids were introduced into medicine about 50 years ago. They represent a significant milestone in dermatologic therapy. Despite encouragement to report observed adverse drug reactions, the clinical practice of reporting is poor and incomplete. Likewise, adverse effects and safety of topical corticosteroids are neglected in the medical literature. The authors provide an updated review of their adverse-effect profile. Children are more prone to the development of systemic reactions to topically applied medication because of their higher ratio of total body surface a

During COVID-19 pandemic, wearing masks for prevention became mandatory but evidence suggest that is also detrimental for skin. Although facial dermatoses due to masks increase in both healthcare workers and general population, a pathogenetic hypothesis remains still elusive. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of dermatological consultations due to Koebner triggered dermatoses In this prospective, multicenter, real life study carried out in Italy from March 11th to December 11th 2020 during COVID-19 pandemics, dermatological consultations (in-person and telemedicine) to study the prevalence o

IMPORTANCE: Accurate classification of dermatologic conditions using International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes is essential for research that uses large administrative datasets. Misclassification can be associated with biased epidemiologic estimates and misleading conclusions in population-based studies.
OBJECTIVE: To systematically identify and evaluate validated classification approaches for dermatologic conditions using ICD codes in US-based administrative, claims, or electronic health record data.
EVIDENCE REVIEW: A systematic review was conducted that was registered with PROS

The incidence of sexually transmitted diseases recently increased in the United States and Europe due to migration, increase in high-risk behavior, and abandonment of safer sex practices at the advent of anti-retroviral combination therapy for human immunodeficiency virus infection. This article presents four cases of primary oral anti perioral syphilis with differential diagnoses. It is important to bear this reappearing infection in mind to avoid latent infection. Resembling common oral infections, the primary affect disappears spontaneously, and the infection enters the second stage. The pa

We report the case of a 56-year-old woman who presented with a 2-month history of widespread oral erosion and a 3-day history of small papules on the lower eyelids. No other skin involvement was found. Histopathological examination revealed suprabasal cleft and acantholysis in the lower epidermis of the papule on the lower eyelid and in the lower mucous membrane of the oral mucosa. Intercellular deposits of IgG and C3 were seen in the whole epidermis of the specimen from the papule on the right lower eyelid by direct immunofluorescence study. These deposits were also observed in the biopsy spe

OBJECTIVE: To present the common features of periocular tinea to aid physicians in future diagnosis and therapy of this condition, because superficial fungal infections on the face are often misdiagnosed owing to the diverse morphologies that they manifest. This is especially true of dermatophytoses involving the periocular region.
METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of patients with a diagnosis of periocular tinea who were seen between January 2003 and September 2009 in the pediatric dermatology clinic at St. Louis Children's Hospital.
RESULTS: Ten cases of periocular tinea were i

Pigmented lesions are commonly found in the mouth. Such lesions represent a variety of clinical entities, ranging from physiologic changes to manifestations of systemic illnesses and malignant neoplasms. Two groups of pigmented lesions of the oral mucosa are recognized: 1) endogenous lesions, including racial pigmentations, melanotic macules, melanocytic nevi, malignant melanoma and 2) exogenous lesions (e.g., blood-related pigmentations, metallic pigmentations). The etiology, differential diagnosis, clinical and histopathological features and management of endogenous pigmented lesions is disc

BACKGROUND: Angioedema is a non-pruritic swelling usually limited to the skin and mucous membranes of the face and perioral soft tissues. It can be life threatening but usually is not, and can be managed with conservative medical treatment unless the airway is endangered. Recent reports suggest that angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors can predispose and/or precipitate angioedema, with a predilection toward patients of African American ancestry.
METHODS: This case report involved a 65-year-old African American female who was being treated surgically for localized chronic periodontit

Cheilitis refers to an acute or chronic inflammation of the lips. It may occur in isolation, affecting only the vermilion border, or may be associated with oral or perioral involvement. Numerous dermatological and systemic diseases may involve the lips, making the clinical assessment of cheilitis particularly challenging. Various types of cheilitis distinguished by frequency, cause, and duration have been described in literature. However, there are no univocal recommendations on classification. This article aims to introduce a classification of cheilitis based on etiology, according to the fol

BACKGROUND: Approximately 150 species of Lepidoptera have been described as causing damage to human skin. One of these species is the pine processionary caterpillar, which is responsible for dermatitis, contact urticaria, ocular lesions and rarely respiratory signs and anaphylactic reactions through IgE-mediated or non-IgE-mediated mechanisms. We report a pediatric case of severe orofacial edema mimicking an allergic reaction after ingestion of a pine processionary caterpillar; urgent airway intubation was required.

BACKGROUND: Demodex folliculorum (DF), found in the pilosebaceous unit, is the most common ectoparasite in humans. It has been implicated in various clinical lesions such as pustular folliculitis, papulopustular scalp eruption, perioral dermatitis, and skin lesions of immunosuppressed patients on chemotherapy or with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine DF carriers and location of DF among patients on chronic dialysis because of end stage renal failure (ESRF), to compare them with healthy controls, and to examine the relationship between DF incidence and

Demodicosis is an ectoparasitic cutaneous infestation of pilosebaceous unit caused by Demodex mites. Demodex spp. are considered to be pathogenic when they increase in number and infect dermis. They can be the cause of diseases such as pityriasis folliculorum, papulopustular rosacea, granulomatous rosacea, inflammatory papule, acne vulgaris, perioral dermatitis, blepharitis and folliculitis. These mites can be found in most mammals including human. Canine and feline demodicosis is a well-known example of severe dermatitis caused by the proliferation of Demodex mites. Dogs are one of the most po

INTRODUCTION: Benzoyl peroxide (BPO) is a widely available over-the-counter topical medication approved in the 1960s for acne vulgaris treatment. NICE guidelines recommend BPO as a monotherapy or in combination with topical retinoids or antibiotics. However, concerns persist regarding optimal concentration and long-term safety, particularly following recent controversies surrounding benzene formation.
AIM: To systematically assess evidence on the indications, efficacy, and safety of topical BPO across dermatological conditions.
METHODOLOGY: A literature search following the PRISMA-P guidelin
