Re-assessing acalculia: Distinguishing spatial and purely arithmetical deficits in right-hemisphere damaged patients.

Arithmetical deficits in right-hemisphere damaged patients have been traditionally considered secondary to visuo-spatial impairments, although the exact relationship between the two deficits has rarely been assessed. The present study implemented a voxelwise lesion analysis among 30 right-hemisphere damaged patients and a controlled, matched-sample, cross-sectional analysis with 35 cognitively normal controls regressing three composite cognitive measures on standardized numerical measures. The results showed that patients and controls significantly differ in Number comprehension, Transcoding,

A qualitative and quantitative study of self-reported positive characteristics of individuals with ADHD.

Research in Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has had a clear focus on treatment and the dysfunction in specific situation associated with the condition. However, self-report, observational and anecdotal evidence indicates that there are also positive aspects associated with ADHD. Research on the potential positive features in individuals with an ADHD diagnosis is still limited, especially studies with larger representative samples. Here we performed qualitative research to identify positive aspects and strengths associated with ADHD in a large convenience sample from the Dutch o

Math fluency is etiologically distinct from untimed math performance, decoding fluency, and untimed reading performance: evidence from a twin study.

The authors examined whether math fluency was independent from untimed math and from reading using 314 pairs of school-aged twins drawn from the Western Reserve Reading and Math Projects. Twins were assessed through a 90-min home visit at approximately age 10 and were reassessed in their homes approximately 1 year later. Results suggested that the shared environment and genetics influenced the covariance among math fluency, untimed math measures, and reading measures. However, roughly two thirds of the variance in math fluency was independent from untimed math measures and reading, including r

Meta-analysis of neural correlates in Chinese reading and math across cognitive processing levels: A cross-domain network interaction perspective.

Reading and math, despite their apparent differences, share overlapping neural substrates and involve multi-level organized cognitive processes that engage common brain networks. This study investigates the cross-domain neural substrates for different levels of cognitive processing in reading and math, focusing on the shared symbolic processing mechanisms underlying both domains. By analyzing Chinese reading and math, we examine how the cognitive processes from perceptual recognition to conceptual integration are organized in the brain. In the reading domain, the three levels include orthograp

AΙ-Driven Interventions for Neurocognitive, Self-Regulation, and Adaptive Skill Development in Neurodevelopmental and Cognitive Disorders: A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials.

Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being used in interventions among individuals with neurodevelopmental and cognitive disorders, offering personalized and adaptive approaches that advance traditional therapeutic practices. Although previous reviews have focused on symptom detection or alleviation, less attention has been paid to the impact of AI in fostering the acquisition of higher-order skills essential for being functional and independent. This review uniquely addresses this gap by synthesizing evidence from randomized controlled trials on AI-driven skill acquisition

Genetic neurodevelopmental clustering and dyslexia.

Dyslexia is a learning difficulty with neurodevelopmental origins, manifesting as reduced accuracy and speed in reading and spelling. It is substantially heritable and frequently co-occurs with other neurodevelopmental conditions, particularly attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Here, we investigate the genetic structure underlying dyslexia and a range of psychiatric traits using results from genome-wide association studies of dyslexia, ADHD, autism, anorexia nervosa, anxiety, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, schizophrenia, and Tourette s

[Longitudinal study of cognitive function in two patients with focal cortical dysplasia].

To clarify the relationship between epileptic attacks and cognitive dysfunction, we examined the serial findings of 123I-IMP single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) in relation to the intelligence quotient (IQ), assessed by Wechsler Intelligence Scale of Children-Revised, in two female patients with focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) over a 10-year period. The age of patient 1 at the initial assessment was 2 years, and the age of patient 2 was 9 months. They developed complex partial epilepsy in infancy, and were treated with antiepileptic drugs, which remained effective until 11 years

Alzheimer's disease families with amyloid precursor protein mutations.

Early onset Familial Alzheimer's Disease (FAD) is an autosomal dominant disease with apparent complete penetrance. It is genetically heterogeneous with some families carrying mutations in the amyloid precursor protein (APP) gene which segregate with the disease. In addition, there is allelic heterogeneity with four mutations associated with FAD. Three mutations have been reported at APP 717, just distal to the C-terminus of the beta-amyloid domain, APP 717 val-ile, APP 717 val-phe, and APP 717 val-gly, which are associated with autopsy-proven Alzheimer's disease (AD). APP 670/671 lies at the N

Developing Adaptive Serious Games for Children With Specific Learning Difficulties: A Two-phase Usability and Technology Acceptance Study.

BACKGROUND: Specific learning difficulties (SpLD) include several disorders such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia, and the children with these SpLD receive special education. However, the studies and the educational material so far focus mainly on one specific disorder. OBJECTIVE: This study's primary goal is to develop comprehensive training material for different types of SpLD, with five serious games addressing different aspects of the SpLD. The second focus is measuring the impact of adaptive difficulty level adjustment in the children's and their educators' usability and technolo

Independent contributions of the central executive, intelligence, and in-class attentive behavior to developmental change in the strategies used to solve addition problems.

Children's (N=275) use of retrieval, decomposition (e.g., 7=4+3 and thus 6+7=6+4+3), and counting to solve additional problems was longitudinally assessed from first grade to fourth grade, and intelligence, working memory, and in-class attentive behavior was assessed in one or several grades. The goal was to assess the relation between capacity of the central executive component of working memory, controlling for intelligence and in-class attentive behavior, and grade-related changes in children's use of these strategies. The predictor on intercept effects from multilevel models revealed that

An escalating continuum of learning and attention difficulties from premutation to full mutation in female carriers of FMR1 expansion.

OBJECTIVE: Carriers of Fragile X premutation may have associated medical comorbidities, such as Fragile X-associated tremor and ataxia (FXTAS) and Fragile X-associated premature ovarian insufficiency (FXPOI). We examined the Fragile X premutation effect on cognition, and we assumed that there is a direct correlation between the continuous spectrum of specific learning and attention deficits to the number of CGG repeats on the FMR1 gene. METHODS: A total of 108 women were referred to our center due to a related Fragile X syndrome (FXS) patient, 79 women carried a premutation of 56-199 repeats,

The cognitive and academic profiles of reading and mathematics learning disabilities.

The purpose of this study was to examine the cognitive and academic profiles associated with learning disability (LD) in reading comprehension, word reading, applied problems, and calculations. The goal was to assess the specificity hypothesis, in which unexpected underachievement associated with LD is represented in terms of distinctive patterns of cognitive and academic strengths and weaknesses. At the start of 3rd grade, the authors assessed 684 students on five cognitive dimensions (nonverbal problem solving, processing speed, concept formation, language, and working memory), and across Gr

Breastfeeding in Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome: An Italian Observational Study.

Objective: Pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome (PANS) is a condition defined by sudden onset of obsessive-compulsive symptoms and/or severe eating restrictions, along with at least two other cognitive, behavioral, or neurological symptoms. Its pathogenesis is unknown but it seems triggered by infections, metabolic disturbances, and other inflammatory reactions. PANS represents a neurodevelopmental problem and infant feeding can play a role. Breast milk is the ideal food for infants and influences children's brain, cognitive, and socio-emotional development. Methods: We enrolled 52

[Managing children with neurofibromatosis type 1: what should we look for?].

INTRODUCTION: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is one of the most common neurocutaneous disorders. It is an autosomal dominant hereditary condition, although an half of all cases are related with spontaneous mutations. Mutations within NF1 gene (c17q11.2) result in loss of function of the protein neurofibromin leading to increase cell proliferation and tumorigenesis. NF1 is a variable condition concerning its clinical manifestations. It may also present different complications through life--a capital issue to pediatric management. METHODS: Descriptive, retrospective, study based on clinical not
