Drop sign of the elbow joint after surgical stabilization of an unstable simple posterolateral dislocation: natural course and contributing factors.

BACKGROUND: We performed this study to investigate the natural course and factors affecting the incidence of drop sign immediately after stabilization of an unstable posterolateral (PL) dislocation of the elbow. METHODS: Twenty-three patients who underwent a stabilization procedure for persistent instability after closed reduction of PL dislocation of the elbow were enrolled. The natural course was evaluated with simple radiographs taken at regular intervals after the operation. Primary repair of medial or lateral ligaments and overlying muscles, degree of adjacent muscle injury, and type of

Intra- and inter-rater reliability of medial elbow joint space width on static ultrasound images: a cross-sectional reliability study.

BACKGROUND: Quantifying the reproducibility of ultrasound measurements of the medial elbow joint space is essential for interpreting changes over time and for comparing raters. However, measurement reliability under controlled, acquisition-independent conditions remains limited. Herein, we aimed to quantify the intra-rater repeatability and inter-rater agreement for static medial elbow ultrasound measurements exclusively focusing on the analytical (measurement) component in healthy elbows. METHODS: In this cross-sectional reliability study, 130 high-quality static ultrasound images from healt

Virtual Rehabilitation of Elbow Flexion Following Nerve Transfer Reconstruction for Brachial Plexus Injuries Using the Single-Joint Hybrid Assisted Limb.

PURPOSE: The upper limb single-joint hybrid assistive limb (HAL), a wearable robot that can support elbow flexion and extension motions, was originally used to rehabilitate patients with stroke. We report the preliminary outcomes of serial HAL use for rehabilitation following nerve transfer (NT) for elbow flexion reconstruction in brachial plexus injuries. METHODS: Hybrid assistive limb training consisted of virtual and power training courses. Virtual training was started before HAL picked up motor unit potentials (MUPs) from the target muscle through electrodes attached to the skin overlying

Development of Self-Adaptable Mechanism to Compensate Angle-Dependent Flexor Tone of the Elbow Joint Post-stroke: A Pilot Study.

Upper extremity impairments are common among stroke survivors. Robotic devices enable a high-dose of repetitive training for patients, but most systems are confined to the laboratory settings due to their complexity and power requirements. Previously we developed a passive elbow device that can counteract the angle-dependent tone of flexor muscles with hypertonia, but its efficacy was found limited as the increase in passive assistance during elbow extension was found not sufficient to provide assistance to those with more severe impairments. Therefore, in this study, we developed a 'self-adap

Voluntary Elbow Extension-Flexion Using Single Joint Hybrid Assistive Limb (HAL) for Patients of Spastic Cerebral Palsy: Two Cases Report.

Cerebral palsy (CP) patients with spastic diplegia struggle to perform activities of daily life (ADL) using their upper arms. The single-joint-type Hybrid Assistive limb (HAL) for upper limbs is a new portable robot that can provide elbow motion support in accordance with bioelectric activation of patient's biceps and triceps brachii muscles. The purpose of this study is to assess the feasibility and efficacy of the use of HAL for CP patients. Two patients were enrolled in this study. (Case 1: a 19-years-old male, at the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) level IV, Case 2: a 17

The Impact of Sira Vedha (Phlebotomy) at the Right Elbow Joint in the Treatment of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease - A Research Report.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) affects 9%-53% of the Indian population. No Indian studies have examined Sira Vedha (phlebotomy) for NAFLD, although it has been studied for other conditions. Sushruta recommended Sira Vedha at the right elbow joint for liver diseases, but clinical evidence for its efficacy in NAFLD is lacking. This clinical trial aimed to generate evidence for Sira Vedha in NAFLD patients. One hundred eleven patients with Grade I/II NAFLD were randomly assigned to either a control group (diet and exercise) or an intervention group (Sira Vedha, diet, and exercise). Blo

Performing a Three-Dimensional Finite Element Analysis to Simulate and Quantify the Contact Pressure in the Canine Elbow Joint: A Pilot Study.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to measure surface pressures and force distribution on radius and ulna in healthy and dysplastic elbow joints in different positions using the finite element analysis (FEA). STUDY DESIGN: FEA was performed on computed tomographic data of healthy and fragmented coronoid process diseased elbow joints of Labrador Retrievers. It considered the articular cartilage, collateral ligaments, triceps and biceps muscle. The analysis of each joint was performed in four positions (standing position: 145 degrees and three positions of the stance phase of gait: beginning:

Use of commercially available foam pipe insulation as a protective device for wounds over the elbow joint area in five dogs.

CASE DESCRIPTION: 4 large-breed dogs were referred because of nonhealing skin wounds involving the elbow joint area of several weeks to months in duration. One additional large-breed dog was evaluated because of a draining abscess with overlying skin necrosis. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Previous attempts at closing each wound over the elbow joint area had been unsuccessful. At the time of hospital admission, open wounds had variable degrees of bacterial contamination and infection. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: Open wounds over the elbow joint area were closed by use of bipedicle advancement flaps or direc

Morrey award 2025: cell count and differential of aspirated fluid in the diagnosis of periprosthetic joint infection of total elbow arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a common method of failure following total elbow arthroplasty (TEA). Diagnosis is often guided by synovial fluid leukocyte counts and neutrophil percentages. Although cutoff values have been defined for hip and knee arthroplasty PJI, the elbow has a different microbiome and a higher rate of PJI. Currently, there are no data to guide determination of PJI following TEA. The purpose of this study was to identify cutoff values of synovial fluid leukocyte counts, neutrophil percentage, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and C-reactive protein (

Anatomic relations of the median nerve to the ulnar insertion of the brachialis muscle: safety issues and implications for medial approaches to the elbow joint.

INTRODUCTION: Preventing nerve injury is critical in elbow surgery. Distal extension of medial approaches, required for coronoid fracture fixation and graft-replacement, may endanger the median nerve. This study aims to describe an easily identifiable and reproducible anatomical landmark to localize the median nerve distal to the joint line and to delineate how its relative position changes with elbow flexion and forearm rotation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The median nerve and the ulnar insertion of the brachialis muscle were identified in eleven fresh-frozen cadaveric specimens after dissection

Clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction following total joint replacement in haemophilia--23-year experience in knees, hips and elbows.

Joint replacement surgery is an available option for end-stage haemophilic arthropathy. However, reports with long-term follow-up are limited. Moreover, patient satisfaction in this setting has never been measured. We share our institution's experience with joint arthroplasty in haemophilic arthropathy and report on clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction. Between 1985 and 2007, 65 consecutive joints in 45 patients (mean age: 48.6; range: 22-83) underwent joint replacement surgery. Of these, 40 total knee replacements in 31 patients, 18 total hip replacements in 16 patients and 6 total elbo

Successful closed manipulation of a pure lateral traumatic dislocation of the elbow joint using a modified Stimson's technique: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Pure lateral elbow dislocation is rare, and a successful closed reduction is even rarer. Reduction can be hindered by swelling, soft tissue interposition or associated fractures. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a pure lateral traumatic dislocation of the elbow joint in a 40-year-old man. This was successfully manipulated and reduced in casualty using a modification of the gravity-aided 'hanging arm' technique originally described for shoulder dislocations by Stimson. CONCLUSION: We strongly recommend the use of this simple technique in these rare yet difficult injuries, in order

[Quality control of prosthetic replacements of knee, ankle, toe, shoulder, elbow and finger joints in Norway 1994. A report after the first year of registration of joint prostheses in the national registry].

Total hip replacements have been recorded in the Norwegian Arthroplasty Register since 1987, and recording of the other joint arthroplasties was started in January 1994. After 12 months 1,589 primary arthroplasties had been registered; these referred to 962 knees, 11 ankles, 76 toes, 113 shoulders, 69 elbows, 12 wrists, 335 fingers and 11 carpometacarpal 1 joints. Median age of the patients was 70 years. 80% were women. Rheumatoid arthritis was the predominant reason for joint replacement, except in the case of the knees where the dominant cause was osteoarthrosis (71%) and of shoulders, 28% o

Anatomical study of the innervation of the posterior elbow joint capsule: implications for ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve block and radiofrequency ablation procedures.

INTRODUCTION: Ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve block and radiofrequency ablation have been developed for pain management in various joints including the hip, knee and shoulder, but not the elbow. Precise three-dimensional (3D) localization of the articular branches and landmarks visible on ultrasound are needed. The objectives of this anatomical study were to determine the presence, course, frequency, landmarks and areas innervated by the articular branches supplying the posterior elbow joint. METHODS: In 12 upper extremity specimens, articular branches to the posterior elbow joint were dis

Ultrasonographic Prevalence of Ring-Down Artifact in the Medial Elbow Joint Gap at the Valgus Position in Asymptomatic High School Baseball Players.

OBJECTIVES: Repetitive valgus stress during pitching in baseball can lead to medial elbow instability. Although ring-down artifact (RDA) has been considered an indicator of valgus instability, its pathological significance remains unclear. This study aimed to clarify RDA-positive rates and differences in valgus conditions in the medial elbow joint gap distance of asymptomatic high school baseball players. METHODS: Sixty-nine high-school students underwent ultrasonography to visualize the medial elbow joint gap distance. Individuals with linear hyperechoic images in the medial elbow joint gap
