A mathematical model for evaluating the role of trypanocide treatment of cattle in the epidemiology and control of Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense and T. b. gambiense sleeping sickness in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Human and animal African trypanosomiases impose a large economic and health burden in their endemic regions. Large strides have been made in the control of human African trypanosomiasis (HAT), yet these efforts have largely focused on the non-zoonotic form of the disease. Using a mathematical model with a 10 year time horizon, we demonstrate the role of the cattle treatment with trypanocides in the epidemiology of zoonotic and non-zoonotic HAT in Uganda, and its potential implications on elimination and eradication of the disease. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We created two com

The effects of post-exposure smallpox vaccination on clinical disease presentation: addressing the data gaps between historical epidemiology and modern surrogate model data.

Decades after public health interventions - including pre- and post-exposure vaccination - were used to eradicate smallpox, zoonotic orthopoxvirus outbreaks and the potential threat of a release of variola virus remain public health concerns. Routine prophylactic smallpox vaccination of the public ceased worldwide in 1980, and the adverse event rate associated with the currently licensed live vaccinia virus vaccine makes reinstatement of policies recommending routine pre-exposure vaccination unlikely in the absence of an orthopoxvirus outbreak. Consequently, licensing of safer vaccines and the

Epidemiologic natural history and clinical management of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Disease: a critical and systematic review of the literature in the development of an HPV dynamic transmission model.

BACKGROUND: Natural history models of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and disease have been used in a number of policy evaluations of technologies to prevent and screen for HPV disease (e.g., cervical cancer, anogenital warts), sometimes with wide variation in values for epidemiologic and clinical inputs. The objectives of this study are to: (1) Provide an updated critical and systematic review of the evidence base to support epidemiologic and clinical modeling of key HPV disease-related parameters in the context of an HPV multi-type disease transmission model which we have applied within

Food Additive Mixtures, Glucose Metabolism, and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Risk: Mechanistic Insights from Epidemiology, Human Intervention Studies, and Experimental Models.

Food additives are consumed as mixtures in ultra-processed foods, but their independent contribution to glucose dysregulation is difficult to separate from diet quality and food matrix. PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science Core Collection, Scopus, and CENTRAL were searched from inception to 30 April 2026, followed by a supplementary PubMed update on 26 July 2026. This critical narrative review integrates epidemiological, human-intervention, animal, ex vivo, and mechanistic evidence. Successive NutriNet-Santé analyses associate several additive co-exposure profiles, emulsifiers, preservatives

Validation of Wastewater-Based Epidemiology Model Predictions and the Influence of Super-Shedders and Sewage Dynamics Using the Fecal Indicators Pepper Mild Mottle Virus and Carjivirus.

Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) monitors pathogens in sewage to estimate community disease trends and prevalence, often capturing cases missed by clinical reporting. WBE models use shedding data to facilitate WBE implementation and interpretation; however, their performance is uncertain because "true" case numbers are unknown. Hence, we compared model-predicted wastewater genome loads and detection rates of pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV) and Carjivirus with values derived from wastewater data in literature. We found that predicted and observed wastewater DNA/RNA load distributions overla

Epidemiology and risk factors of multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacilli in healthcare-associated infections: development of an exploratory risk assessment model in a Moroccan regional hospital.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacilli (MDR-GNB) are a growing public health threat, particularly in hospitals. This study identified risk factors for HAIs due to MDR-GNB in a regional hospital via univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. METHODS: We conducted a case–control study at the Regional Hospital of Beni Mellal, Morocco (November 2021–April 2024). Adult inpatients with HAIs due to GNB were included. Cases were defined as MDR-GNB infections, and controls as non-MDR-GNB infections. Demographic, clinical, a

Fine-Scale Air Pollution Models for Epidemiologic Research: Insights From Approaches Developed in the Multi-ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis and Air Pollution (MESA Air).

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Epidemiological studies of short- and long-term health impacts of ambient air pollutants require accurate exposure estimates. We describe the evolution in exposure assessment and assignment in air pollution epidemiology, with a focus on spatiotemporal techniques first developed to meet the needs of the Multi-ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis and Air Pollution (MESA Air). Initially designed to capture the substantial variation in pollutant levels and potential health impacts that can occur over small spatial and temporal scales in metropolitan areas, these methods have now matu

The impact of 2-dose routine measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella vaccination in France on the epidemiology of varicella and zoster using a dynamic model with an empirical contact matrix.

PURPOSE: Varicella has a high incidence affecting the vast majority of the population in France and can lead to severe complications. Almost every individual infected by varicella becomes susceptible to herpes zoster later in life due to reactivation of the latent virus. Zoster is characterized by pain that can be long-lasting in some cases and has no satisfactory treatment. Routine varicella vaccination can prevent varicella. The vaccination strategy of replacing both doses of measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) with a combined MMR and varicella (MMRV) vaccine is a means of reaching high vaccin

Epidemiological trajectories and predictive modeling of latent tuberculosis prevalence in South Asia: an in-depth global burden of disease analysis (1990-2021) with advanced forecasting to 2050.

BACKGROUND: Latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) remains a critical reservoir for the global tuberculosis (TB) epidemic, particularly in South Asia, where high population density and socioeconomic disparities amplify its burden. However, LTBI epidemiological trajectories and long-term forecasts have received limited attention. This study characterizes LTBI prevalence trends in South Asia from 1990 to 2021 and forecasts prevalence to 2050 to inform targeted interventions. METHODS: We analysed age-standardised LTBI prevalence rates (ASPR per 100 000 population) from the Global Burden of Disease

Impact of a 21-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine on pneumococcal disease incidence among adults 65-84 years of age in Belgium: An epidemiological modeling study.

Pneumococcal disease (PD) imposes a high clinical and economic burden in Belgium. Effective multivalent vaccines are available and recommended for adults at elevated risk of PD, but do not protect against certain clinically important bacterial serotypes. In response, a new 21-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, PCV21, was designed to protect adults against a greater proportion of pneumococcal disease. This study estimated the impact of implementing PCV21 versus the currently recommended vaccine (PCV20) in Belgium on the incidence of invasive PD (IPD) and non-bacteremic pneumococcal pneumoni

Epidemiological impact and cost-effectiveness of providing long-acting pre-exposure prophylaxis to injectable contraceptive users for HIV prevention in South Africa: a modelling study.

INTRODUCTION: Although pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP.) is an efficacious HIV prevention strategy, its preventive benefit has not been shown among young women in sub-Saharan Africa, likely due to non-adherence. Adherence may be improved with the use of injectable long-acting PrEP methods currently being developed. We hypothesize that providing long-acting PrEP to women using injectable contraceptives, the most frequently used contraceptive method in South Africa, could improve adherence to PrEP, result in a reduction of new HIV infections, and be a relatively easy-to-reach target population.
