Inoculation Route and Serotype Alter Salmonella Recovery in the Broiler's Digestive Tract.

Salmonella enterica serotypes Enteritidis (SE) and Heidelberg (SH) are consistently linked to poultry-related foodborne outbreaks and can be isolated from broiler parts in processing facilities. In order to control this pathogen's establishment in the broiler, entryways at the farm that lead to colonization must be considered. The objective of these trials was to determine if the inoculation route of either SE or SH altered its recovery in a market-age broiler's digestive tract if chicks were dosed on day of hatch. Chicks were given a 104 colony-forming units inoculation of SE or SH on day 0 v

Rapid and Specific Detection of All Known Nipah virus Strains' Sequences With Reverse Transcription-Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification.

Nipah virus (NiV) is a zoonotic virus and can be transmitted through contaminated food or directly between people. NiV is classified as a Biosafety Level 4 agent, not only because of its relatively high case fatality rate, but also because there is no vaccine or other medical countermeasures and it appears to be transmitted by fomites/particulates. The development of rapid detection assay for NiV is of great importance because no effective field test is currently available. In this study, an isothermal (65°C) reverse transcription-loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) method was dev

β-Lactam and Fluoroquinolone-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae Recovered from the Environment of Human and Veterinary Tertiary Care Hospitals.

The dissemination of Enterobacteriaceae expressing resistance to clinically important antibiotics such as extended-spectrum cephalosporins (ESC), carbapenems, and fluoroquinolones is of critical concern to both human and veterinary medicine. In healthcare facilities, the movement of patients, personnel, and equipment provides an opportunity for Enterobacteriaceae carrying antibiotic resistance genes to disseminate in the hospital environment where they pose a threat to patients, staff, and hospital visitors. We collected environmental samples using electrostatic cloths to estimate the frequenc

Molecular detection of influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses with M genes from human pandemic strains among Nigerian pigs, 2013-2015: implications and associated risk factors.

In the post-pandemic period, influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 virus has been detected in swine populations in different parts of the world. This study was conducted to determine the presence and spatial patterns of this human pandemic virus among Nigerian pigs and identify associated risk factors. Using a two-stage stratified random sampling method, nasal swab specimens were obtained from pigs in Ibadan, Nigeria during the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 influenza seasons, and the virus was detected by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Purified RT-PCR products were sequenced in both dire

Neonatal nonpolio enterovirus and parechovirus infections.

Nonpolio enteroviruses and parechoviruses are frequent causes of neonatal infection. Clinical manifestations of infection range from asymptomatic infection to mild infection without sequelae to septic shock with muiltiorgan failure. Neonates with clinically apparent infection typically have mothers and/or other contacts with recent symptoms consistent with a viral illness. Severe neonatal infection with nonpolio enterovirus or parechovirus cannot be differentiated clinically from serious bacterial infection. The preferred method for diagnosing neonatal nonpolio enterovirus or parechovirus infe

Monkeypox in Healthcare Settings: A Narrative Review of Transmission, Exposure, and Protection Among Healthcare Workers.

Monkeypox, caused by an Orthopoxvirus, poses a significant occupational risk to healthcare workers due to their frequent contact with infected patients and contaminated materials. This risk is increased by potential lapses in infection control protocols in hospitals, such as a lack of personal protective equipment (PPE), improper hand hygiene, and other issues, making hospitals a key site for occupational transmission of monkeypox. The objective of the study was to evaluate monkeypox transmission among healthcare workers and identify critical preventive strategies. A comprehensive literature s

Utilizing Rapid Hydrogen Peroxide Generation from 6-Hydroxycatechol to Design Moisture-Activated, Self-Disinfecting Coating.

A coating that can be activated by moisture found in respiratory droplets could be a convenient and effective way to control the spread of airborne pathogens and reduce fomite transmission. Here, the ability of a novel 6-hydroxycatechol-containing polymer to function as a self-disinfecting coating on the surface of polypropylene (PP) fabric was explored. Catechol is the main adhesive molecule found in mussel adhesive proteins. Molecular oxygen found in an aqueous solution can oxidize catechol and generate a known disinfectant, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), as a byproduct. However, given the limite

Biodetection of an odor signature in white-tailed deer associated with infection by chronic wasting disease prions.

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) has become a major concern among those involved in managing wild and captive cervid populations. CWD is a fatal, highly transmissible spongiform encephalopathy caused by an abnormally folded protein, called a prion. Prions are present in a number of tissues, including feces and urine in CWD infected animals, suggesting multiple modes of transmission, including animal-to-animal, environmental, and by fomite. CWD management is complicated by the lack of practical, non-invasive, live-animal screening tests. Recently, there has been a focus on how the volatile odors o

Influenza virus infection and aerosol shedding kinetics in a controlled human infection model.

UNLABELLED: Establishing effective mitigation strategies to reduce the spread of influenza virus requires an improved understanding of the mechanisms of transmission. We evaluated the use of a controlled human infection model using an H3N2 seasonal influenza virus to study critical aspects of transmission, including symptom progression and the dynamics of virus shedding. Eight volunteers were challenged with influenza A/Perth/16/2009 (H3N2) virus between July and September 2022 at Emory University Hospital. Viral shedding in the nasopharynx, saliva, stool, urine, and respiratory aerosols was m

Reducing touching eyes, nose and mouth ('T-zone') to reduce the spread of infectious disease: A prospective study of motivational, volitional and non-reflective predictors.

BACKGROUND: The route into the body for many pathogens is through the eyes, nose and mouth (i.e., the 'T-zone') via inhalation or fomite-based transfer during face touching. It is important to understand factors that are associated with touching the T-zone to inform preventive strategies. PURPOSE: To identify theory-informed predictors of intention to reduce facial 'T-zone' touching and self-reported 'T-zone' touching. METHODS: We conducted a nationally representative prospective questionnaire study of Canadians. Respondents were randomized to answer questions about touching their eyes, nose

Two Single Incursions of H7N7 and H5N1 Low Pathogenicity Avian Influenza in U.K. Broiler Breeders During 2015 and 2016.

Low pathogenicity (LP) avian influenza viruses (AIVs) have a natural reservoir in wild birds. These cause few (if any) overt clinical signs, but include H5 and H7 LPAIVs, which are notifiable in poultry. In the European Union, notifiable avian disease (NAD) demands laboratory confirmation with prompt statutory interventions to prevent dissemination of infection to multiple farms. Crucially, for H5 and H7 LPAIVs, movement restrictions and culling limit the further risk of mutation to the corresponding highly pathogenic (HP) H5 and H7 AIVs in gallinaceous poultry. An H7N7 LPAIV outbreak occurred

Biting injuries and transmission of Tasmanian devil facial tumour disease.

The Tasmanian devil is threatened with extinction by devil facial tumour disease (DFTD), a unique infectious cancer in which the tumour cells themselves, which derive from a single long-dead host devil, are the infective agent and the tumour is an infectious parasitic cell line. Transmission is thought to occur via direct inoculation of tumour cells when susceptible and infected individuals bite each other or by fomitic transfer of tumour cells. The nature of transmission and the extent to which biting behaviour and devil ecology is associated with infection risk remains unclear. Until our rec

Videography of pathways for enteric pathogen exposure among children in urban informal settlements in Fiji and Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Children in urban informal settlements are vulnerable to enteric pathogen exposures due to inadequate availability of clean water, sanitation, and wastewater treatment. These exposures can contribute to diarrhea, malabsorption, and poor growth. Understanding how children interact with their environments – particularly through mouthing behaviors – can help identify high-risk environmental sources, exposure pathways, and opportunities for intervention. The objective of the study is to characterize mouthing behaviors among young children and assess the environmental contexts in which

Effect of Common Variables on Autoclave Best Practices in Rodent Barrier Programs.

To maintain rodent colonies free from harmful infectious agents, laboratory animal care programs frequently employ the use of sterilized caging and supplies. Sterilized caging is important for preventing the spread of infectious pathogens from contaminated fomites, for biocontainment, and for safety. We designed several experiments to determine the effects of commonly encountered processes on steam penetration and substrate heat exposure. We used biologic indicators as a proxy for steam penetration. We used the time bedding spent above 121 °C as a proxy for substrate cumulative heat exposure.

Domestic laundering of healthcare textiles: Disinfection efficacy and risks of antibiotic resistance transmission.

Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are a major public health concern, with the evidence base for the potential role of textiles as fomites in microbial transmission growing. In the UK, domestic laundering machines (DLMs) are commonly used to clean healthcare worker uniforms, raising concerns about their effectiveness in microbial decontamination and role in AMR development. This study aimed to evaluate DLMs' ability to decontaminate microorganisms and their potential impact on AMR. The performance of six DLMs was assessed using Enterococcus faecium bioindica
