Discrimination and material-need insecurities intersect in association with poor mental health among youth and young adults with type 1 diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about how perceived discrimination and material-need insecurities jointly contribute to poor mental health among youth and young adults (YYA) with diabetes. We examined how these factors intersect to influence mental health among YYA with type 1 diabetes. METHOD: Analyses included 829 YYA with type 1 diabetes from the SEARCH Food Security Cohort study. Classification tree analysis identified patterns among perceived discrimination, material-need insecurities, demographic, and socioeconomic characteristics that distinguish between moderate-to-severe and minimal-to-mi

Beyond the Plate: the Role of Food Insecurity Trajectories in Shaping Child Emotional and Conduct Problems.

The risk of child emotional and conduct problems elevates in the context of food insecurity. However, it is unclear whether these relationships could vary when considering the fact that food insecurity may change by time. Addressing this research gap can help clarify which specific patterns of food insecurity over time present the highest risk to children's emotional and behavioral well-being, an important step forward to informing prevention efforts. Utilizing data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics Main Study and Child Development Supplement, this study examines the associations between

Invisible lives: understanding the food insecurity and food-seeking behaviour among Bangladeshi undocumented migrants amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Undocumented migrants often face significant socio-economic and health vulnerabilities, which are further intensified during global crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Among these challenges, food insecurity emerges as a critical concern, particularly for migrants lacking legal status, social protection, and access to basic services. This study examines the prevalence of food insecurity and food-seeking behaviour-related coping mechanisms among Bangladeshi undocumented migrants living in Malaysia, Iraq, and Libya during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Twenty-seven undocumented B

Food Insecurity Negatively Impacts Gluten Avoidance and Nutritional Intake in Patients With Celiac Disease.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity is a major public health challenge. For patients with celiac disease (CeD), food insecurity may be particularly detrimental as it threatens the cornerstone of their treatment: adoption of a gluten-free diet (GFD). We aimed to characterize the prevalence of food insecurity in patients with CeD and evaluate its impact on GFD adoption and nutritional intake. METHODS: We analyzed data from patients with CeD participating in the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2009 to 2014. Food insecurity was defined using the US Department of Agricult

The Interplay Between Summer Meals, Food Insecurity, and Diet Quality Among Low-Income Children in Maryland, USA: A Multiphase Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: Food insecurity and poor diet quality disproportionately affect U.S. children from low-income households, with summer school closures exacerbating risks. Federally funded programs like the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) and SUN Bucks (Summer EBT) aim to address these challenges, yet evidence of their post-pandemic dietary impact remains limited. Objectives: This study examines the relationship between policy innovations, summer meal participation, food insecurity, and diet quality among children from low-income households in Prince George's County, Maryland. Methods: A cross-se

Interlinkages between Climate Change and Food Systems: The Impact on Child Malnutrition-Narrative Review.

The pandemics of obesity, undernutrition, and climate change represent severe threats to child health. They co-occur; interact with each other to produce sequelae at biological, psychological, or social levels; and share common underlying drivers. In this paper, we review the key issues concerning child diet and nutritional status, focusing on the interactions with climate and food systems. Inadequate infant and young child feeding practices, food insecurity, poverty, and limited access to health services are the leading causes of malnutrition across generations. Food system industrialization

Measuring sustainable consumer food purchasing and behavior.

Consumer food purchasing and willingness to adopt a sustainable healthy diet (SHD) is a key factor affecting the sustainability of the entire food system. Studies have developed scales to measure consumer preferences for particular consumption patterns, while others have sought to empirically define the multiple dimensions of a sustainable food system (environmental, social, economic, etc.). This paper builds on these literatures by tracking consumers' SHD behaviors using a large-scale, longitudinal survey of adults in the United States and mapping them onto multiple systems-level indicators.

Current impacts of elevated CO2 on crop nutritional quality: a review using wheat as a case study.

This review synthesises current research findings and modelling approaches to explore the impact of elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (eCO2) concentrations on crop productivity, water and nutrient use efficiency, plant nutritional quality, and the implications for global food security. Over recent decades, rising atmospheric CO2 levels have sparked significant concern due to their role in driving climate change. While some studies highlight the potential benefits of eCO2, such as increased crop yields and improved water-use efficiency, many recent investigations reveal a concerning decline i

Exploring finger millet as an underutilised African indigenous grain crop for functional food development, sustainable nutrition, and health.

INTRODUCTION: Food insecurity and malnutrition remain major challenges in Sub-Saharan Africa, driven by climate change and agricultural systems that rely heavily on a few staple crops, including maize, rice, and wheat. The prioritisation of these crops during the Green Revolution has contributed to the neglect of nutrient-rich indigenous grains. Finger millet (Eleusine coracana), an indigenous African cereal, has attracted increasing attention because of its exceptional nutritional composition, climate resilience, and potential for functional food development. This review evaluated the role of

Underlying Medical Conditions and Severe Illness Among 540,667 Adults Hospitalized With COVID-19, March 2020-March 2021.

INTRODUCTION: During the COVID-19 pandemic, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) emergency allotments and emergency rent assistance provided support to low-income households. Rent burden, a form of housing insecurity, can severely limit household resources, which, in turn, affects health equity. We explored whether these policy interventions equitably supported households that were or were not experiencing rent burden. METHODS: We used data from the US Household Pulse Survey (June 2022-May 2023) to examine whether associations between emergency support policies and indicators of f

An intersectionality-based policy analysis of COVID-19 measures and women informal food vendors in Kisumu, Kenya.

INTRODUCTION: Women working as informal food vendors in Kisumu faced precarious work conditions that worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite playing a vital role in urban household food security, they were excluded from policy decisions, which were largely confined to technical experts and national government officials. METHODS: Using the Intersectionality-Based Policy Analysis (IBPA) framework, this study examined the engagement of women informal food vendors and the disparities in COVID-19 control policies. Between July 10, 2024, and October 15, 2024, we conducted a qualitative study

Housing circumstances are associated with household food access among low-income urban families.

Household food insecurity is a pervasive problem in North America with serious health consequences. While affordable housing has been cited as a potential policy approach to improve food insecurity, the relationship between conventional notions of housing affordability and household food security is not well understood. Furthermore, the influence of housing subsidies, a key policy intervention aimed at improving housing affordability in Western countries, on food insecurity is unclear. We undertook a cross-sectional survey of 473 families in market rental (n = 222) and subsidized (n = 251) hou
