Melandrium album (syn. Silene latifolia) is a model dioecious species in which the Y chromosome, present only in heterogametic males, plays both a male-determining and a strict female-suppressing role. We showed that treatment with 5-azacytidine (5-azaC) induces a sex change to androhermaphroditism (an-dromonoecy) in about 21% of male plants, while no apparent phenotypic effect was observed in females. All of these bisexual androhermaphrodites (with the standard male 24, AA + XY karyotype) were mosaics possessing both male and hermaphrodite flowers and, moreover, the hermaphrodite flowers disp

DNA methylation, as a central mechanism of epigenetic regulation, plays a key role in coordinating plant growth and stress responses. Simultaneously, the gaseous phytohormone ethylene is also a crucial regulator in these processes. Both form a metabolic competition through S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM) and mutually regulate each other at the level of gene expression. Studies demonstrate that DNA methylation functions to either enhance or block ethylene synthesis and ethylene signal transduction, thereby regulating a spectrum of developmental processes including seed development, root growth, f

Traditional breeding for high-yielding crops has mainly relied on the widespread cultivation of gibberellin (GA)-deficient semi-dwarf varieties, as dwarfism increases lodging resistance and allows for high nitrogen use, resulting in high grain yield. Although the adoption of semi-dwarf varieties in rice and wheat breeding brought big success to the 'Green Revolution' in the 20th century, it consequently increased the demand for nitrogen-based fertilizer, which causes severe threat to ecosystems and sustainable agriculture. To make the 'Green Revolution' truly green, it is necessary to develop

BACKGROUND: microRNAs (miRNAs) are important regulators in plant growth and development. miR159 is a conserved miRNA among different plant species and has various functions in plants. Studies on miR159 are mostly done on model plant, Arabidopsis thaliana. In rice, studies on miR159 were either based upon genome-wide expression analyses focused upon responses to different nitrogen forms and abiotic stress or upon phenotypic studies of transgenic plants overexpressing its precursor. STTM (Short Tandem Target Mimic) is an effective tool to block the activity of endogenous mature miRNA activity in

Epigenetic modifications have emerged as an important mechanism underlying plant defence against pathogens. We examined the role of JMJ14, a Jumonji (JMJ) domain-containing H3K4 demethylase, in local and systemic plant immune responses in Arabidopsis. The function of JMJ14 in local or systemic defence response was investigated by pathogen growth assays and by analysing expression and H3K4me3 enrichments of key defence genes using qPCR and ChIP-qPCR. Salicylic acid (SA) and pipecolic acid (Pip) levels were quantified and function of JMJ14 in SA- and Pip-mediated defences was analysed in Col-0 a

Alternaria tenuissima leaf spot disease severely hinders sustainable walnut production in Xinjiang. To dissect the molecular basis of walnut disease resistance and mine resistance-associated genes, we investigated the physiological and transcriptomic responses of a resistant wild walnut and a susceptible cultivar, 'Xinxin No.2'. We found that the wild walnut displayed slower lesion spread and markedly higher defense enzyme activity; its chitinase activity stayed 30%-45% above that of 'Xinxin No.2' throughout pathogen infection. Transcriptomic data revealed significant enrichment of the amino s

Durian (Durio zibethinus), which is an important economic crop in Southeast Asia, is known for its distinct aroma combining sulfurous and fruity notes. Volatile esters are the main contributors to the sweet, fruity aroma of ripe durian fruit. Volatile ester contents in fruit are generally regulated by the activities of alcohol acyltransferase (AAT) and enzymes that metabolize amino acids, fatty acids, and carbohydrates into aroma volatiles. However, the molecular regulation of ester biosynthesis in durian remains unexplored. In this study, we aimed to identify key durian genes involved in este

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is a common air pollutant that has complex impacts on plants. The effect of prior exposure to 30mgm-3 SO2 on defence against Botrytis cinerea (B. cinerea) in Arabidopsis thaliana and the possible mechanisms of action were investigated. The results indicated that pre-exposure to 30mgm-3 SO2 resulted in significantly enhanced resistance to B. cinerea infection. SO2 pre-treatment significantly enhanced the activities of defence-related enzymes including phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), polyphenol oxidase (PPO), β-1,3-glucanase (BGL) and chitinase (CHI). Carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) availability must be continuously integrated to sustain plant growth and development, yet the molecular mechanisms underlying this integration have long remained elusive. In this review, we highlight emerging evidence that C and N signaling converge on a regulatory network involving SnRK1, NLP7, TOR, and potentially nitric oxide. The clearest conceptual advance is the demonstration that SnRK1 directly phosphorylates the nitrate sensor and transcriptional regulator NLP7, providing an integration node through which energy limitation and C deficiency can suppress the p

Plant tissue culture is a crucial part of biotechnology that supports crop improvement, plant conservation, and other related fields. Although tissue culture has been successfully used in many plants, low regeneration and transformation rates still exist in some species. Agrobacterium-mediated transformation is commonly used in genetic engineering, but its effectiveness depends heavily on establishing a reliable in vitro regeneration system through organogenesis or somatic embryogenesis. Over the past decade, substantial progress has been made in understanding the molecular basis of regenerati

BACKGROUND: Crown gall disease, caused by the pathogenic bacterium Agrobacterium tumefaciens, is responsible for extensive economic losses in orchards. Cherry rootstock 'CDR-1' (Prunus mahaleb) shows high resistance but the mechanism remains unclear. Here, we examined the morphology of pathogen-infected root neck surface, determined the activity of 10 defense-related enzymes and the content of salicylic acid (SA) and jasmonic acid (JA), and also applied transcriptome analysis, transient expression and transgenic verification to explore the crown gall resistance genes in 'CDR-1' plants.

The molecular basis behind shade tolerance in plants is not fully understood. Previously, we have shown that a connection may exist between shade tolerance and dwarfism, however, the mechanism connecting these phenotypes is not well understood. In order to clarify this connection, we analyzed the transcriptome of a previously identified shade-tolerant mutant of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) called shadow-1. shadow-1 mutant plants are dwarf, and are significantly tolerant to shade in a number of environments compared to wild-type controls. In this study, we treated shadow-1 and wild-ty

Transcriptome analysis of a persimmon population segregating for an astringency trait in fruit suggested central roles for a limited number of transcriptional regulators in the loss of proanthocyanidin accumulation. Persimmon (Diospyros kaki; 2n = 6x = 90) accumulates a large amount of proanthocyanidins (PAs) in its fruit, resulting in an astringent taste. Persimmon cultivars are classified into four types based on the nature of astringency loss and the amount of PAs at maturity. Pollination constant and non-astringent (PCNA)-type cultivars stop accumulating PAs in the early stages of fruit de

Plant mitochondria have multiple energy-dissipating components in the respiratory chain. It is known that these components are induced under several stress conditions. Here we examined whether the gene expression pattern and its regulatory mechanism under high light (HL) conditions are different among the respiratory components in Arabidopsis leaves. Alternative oxidase (AOX) gene expression (AOX1a and AOX1c) and amount of protein were elevated after exposure to HL. In addition to AOX, the expression of other respiratory genes, including NDA1, NDB2, NDC1, UCP1, UCP5, COX6b and CI76, was also i

Rice MADS29 has recently been reported to cause programmed cell death of maternal tissues, the nucellus, and the nucellar projection during early stages of seed development. However, analyses involving OsMADS29 protein expression domains and characterization of OsMADS29 gain-of-function and knockdown phenotypes revealed novel aspects of its function in maintaining hormone homeostasis, which may have a role in the development of embryo and plastid differentiation and starch filling in endosperm cells. The MADS29 transcripts accumulated to high levels soon after fertilization; however, protein a

Leaf senescence is a programmed plant developmental process that can also be regulated by environmental factors, like nutrient availability. Although phosphorus is an essential element determining plants' growth, mechanisms underlying adaptation to phosphorus availability in plants are not well understood. In this study, we combined physiological, biochemical and molecular approaches to investigate the effect of phosphate supply on leaf senescence in rice, one of the world's most important crops. We show that short-term treatment of rice seedlings with low phosphate increases photosynthetic pi

Agarwood is a resin produced by wounded Aquilaria plants. Aquilaria sinensis (Lour.) Gilg is the original plant source of agarwood in China. Formic acid combined with Botryosphaeria rhodina A13 (FAA13) induces the formation of artificial agarwood as an effective integrated induction method. However, its formation mechanism is still unclear, and the harvesting time of agarwood has not been elucidated. In this work, we analyzed FAA13-induced artificial agarwood and leaves at different time points within one year based on endophytic fungal community, expression of related genes, and secondary me

Plant lateral organs are often elaborated through repetitive formation of developmental units, which progress robustly in predetermined patterns along their axes. Leaflets in compound leaves provide an example of such units that are generated sequentially along the longitudinal axis, in species-specific patterns. In this context, we explored the molecular mechanisms underlying an acropetal mode of leaflet initiation in chickpea pinnate compound leaf patterning. By analyzing naturally occurring mutants multi-pinnate leaf1 (mpl1) that develop higher-ordered pinnate leaves with more than forty le

Allelopathy means that one plant produces chemical substances to affect the growth and development of other plants. Usually, allelochemicals can stimulate or inhibit the germination and growth of plants, which have been considered as potential strategy for drug development of environmentally friendly biological herbicides. Obviously, the discovery of plant materials with extensive sources, low cost and markedly allelopathic effect will have far-reaching ecological impacts as the biological herbicide. At present, a large number of researches have already reported that certain plant-derived alle

Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) is a sustainable cellulosic energy crop with high biomass yield on marginal soils. Tillering, an important agronomic characteristic related to biomass production in gramineous plants, is regulated by complex interacting factors, such as plant hormones. Strigolactones (SLs) comprise a novel class of plant hormones that inhibit shoot branching. The MORE AXILLARY GROWTH2 (MAX2)/DWARF 3 (D3)/RAMOSUS (RMS4) genes encode proteins involved in the SL signaling pathway in various plants. The switchgrass tetraploid genome likely contains two high-similarity MAX2 homolog
