The frequency-following response (FFR) is an auditory-evoked response recorded at the scalp that captures the spectrotemporal properties of tonal stimuli. Previous investigations report that the amplitude of the FFR fluctuates as a function of stimulus frequency, a phenomenon thought to reflect multiple neural generators phase-locking to the stimulus with different response latencies. When phase-locked responses are offset by different latencies, constructive and destructive phase interferences emerge in the volume-conducted signals, culminating in an attenuation or amplification of the scalp-

Evidence implicates the cerebellum in motor learning and performance, and relatively simple sensorimotor associations such as classical conditioning. However, little is known about how Purkinje cells encode more complex associations, such as arbitrary stimulus-response mappings. To address this, we recorded from Crus I/II Purkinje cells while two male macaques learned to associate novel fractal cues with left- or right-hand bar release. Here we show that as learning progresses, the simple spike activity of individual neurons becomes more selective for stimulus-response associations, with selec

The ability for the brain to discriminate among visual stimuli is constrained by their retinal representations. Previous studies of visual discriminability have been limited to either low-dimensional artificial stimuli or pure theoretical considerations without a realistic encoding model. Here we propose a novel framework for understanding stimulus discriminability achieved by retinal representations of naturalistic stimuli with the method of information geometry. To model the joint probability distribution of neural responses conditioned on the stimulus, we created a stochastic encoding model

PURPOSE: To describe four patients with stimulus-sensitive seizures and myoclonus following severe hypoxic-ischemic injury.
METHODS: In 22 months, four adult patients with myoclonus, generalized tonic-clonic, and clonic seizures following tactile stimulation were identified. EEG and hospital records were reviewed.
RESULTS: EEGs showed bursts of generalized spike and polyspike activity following tactile stimulation associated with the clinical seizures. No cerebral activity was present between the epileptiform bursts. At times, prolonged periods of suppression were recorded. All patients fail

Neural correlates of mating calling can be recorded from isolated brainstems of male, Northern leopard frogs after the circuits for this behavior have been triggered by electrical stimulation of the preoptic area. Correlates can be evoked reliably and by a stimulus of low amplitude. However, such correlates can be evoked only rarely from female brainstems, and then only by a much larger stimulus. The sensitivity to triggering in female brainstems can be masculinized by previous treatment of the intact frog with testosterone propionate or dihydrotestosterone, but not by estradiol benzoate. Stimulus-responsive drug delivery nanotechnologies promise noninvasive activation of the right drug at the right place at the right time. However, these systems often incorporate non-validated pharmaceutical excipients and other features that limit their clinical translation. Here we engineer the responsiveness of liposomes to a pulsed, low-intensity ultrasound activating stimulus by incorporating a generally regarded as safe excipient that alters the acoustic properties of the liposome core medium. We show that this approach permits loading and ultrasound-induced release of four drugs in vitr

Research shows that, on average, children with dyslexia behave less categorically in phoneme categorization tasks. This study investigates three subtle ways that struggling readers may perform differently than their typically developing peers in this experimental context: sensitivity to the frequency distribution from which speech tokens are drawn, bias induced by previous stimulus presentations, and fatigue during the course of the task. We replicate findings that reading skill is related to categorical labeling, but we do not find evidence that sensitivity to the stimulus frequency distribut

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has been described as a disorder where frequent lapses of attention impair the ability of an individual to focus/attend in a sustained manner, thereby generating abnormally large intra-individual behavioral variability across trials. Indeed, increased reaction time (RT) variability is a fundamental behavioral characteristic of individuals with ADHD found across a large number of cognitive tasks. But what is the underlying neurophysiology that might generate such behavioral instability? Here, we examined trial-by-trial EEG response variability to

A critical component of anesthesia is the loss of sensory perception. Propofol is the most widely used drug for general anesthesia, but the neural mechanisms of how and when it disrupts sensory processing are not fully understood. We analyzed local field potential and spiking recorded from Utah arrays in auditory cortex, associative cortex, and cognitive cortex of nonhuman primates before and during propofol-mediated unconsciousness. Sensory stimuli elicited robust and decodable stimulus responses and triggered periods of stimulus-related synchronization between brain areas in the local field

Using outlines derived from a widely used set of line drawings, we created stimuli geared towards the investigation of contour integration and texture segmentation using shapes of everyday objects. Each stimulus consisted of Gabor elements positioned and oriented curvilinearly along the outline of an object, embedded within a larger Gabor array of homogeneous density. We created six versions of the resulting Gaborized outline stimuli by varying the orientations of elements inside and outside the outline. Data from two experiments, in which participants attempted to identify the objects in the

Despite recent successes, patients suffering from locked-in syndrome (LIS) still struggle to communicate using vision-independent brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). In this study, we compared auditory and tactile BCIs, regarding training effects and cross-stimulus-modality transfer effects, when switching between stimulus modalities. We utilized a streaming-based P300 BCI, which was developed as a low workload approach to prevent potential BCI-inefficiency. We randomly assigned 20 healthy participants to two groups. The participants received three sessions of training either using an auditory B

The vagosympathetic trunks of anesthetized propranolized dogs were stimulated with brief electrical bursts, and heart period (P-P interval), atrioventricular conduction (P-R interval), and pressure generated on a balloon anchored in the atrium (AP) were measured. Two vagal stimulus bursts were given separated by an integral number of cardiac cycles but with each placed at the same relative time in the cardiac cycle. The time between stimulus bursts (T) varied from 2 to 60 s. For all cardiac variables over this time span, the peak response to the second stimulus (P2) was less than that of the f

Safe electrical stimulation of neural tissue is typically achieved using charge-balanced biphasic current pulses, which are designed to minimize the generation of direct current (DC) and the production of harmful electrochemical products. However, due to the kinetics of the charge injection process, neural stimulators must also use capacitive coupling or electrode shorting techniques, to ensure DC levels are minimal. Previous studies have reported a reduction in excitability of the auditory nerve following acute simulation at high rates and intensities. Elevated levels of DC were reported in t

Congenital microphthalmos belongs to a spectrum of diseases ranging from true anophthalmos to congenital clinical anophthalmos to microphthalmos. These conditions are frequently associated with an orbitopalpebral cyst, and pathologically, this represents a failure in the closure of the embryonic fissure at the 7-14 mm stage of gestation. The cyst develops as an outpouching from the eyeball and is generally helpful as it provides a stimulus for the orbit to expand. The general management guideline is to retain the cyst till it provides a stimulus for the orbit to expand and then to consider asp

The use of high stimulus rates has the potential to improve the electrocochleogram's (ECochG) sensitivity and specificity in endolymphatic hydrops and Menière's disease, but is currently hindered by the absence of an acceptable normative database. In response, this study recorded click-evoked ECochG tracings from 51 normal-hearing subjects (102 ears), between 18 and 60 years of age, at 7.1, 51.1, 101.1 and 151.1 clicks/s using a tympanic membrane electrode. As stimulus rate increased, various statistically significant (p < 0.05) changes were observed. In general, summating potential (SP) laten

Visual self-motion information is known to contribute to postural control, but it is unclear precisely which aspects of visual motion information drive changes in posture. We report here results for standing humans which suggest that there is a speed of movement threshold that must be exceeded by a visual stimulus if a posture response is to be generated. We use signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) methods to measure the strength of steady-state visually evoked posture responses (SSVEPRs) to sinusoidal modulations of visual viewpoint position in a virtual environment (VE). Using threshold estimates fou

The reduced P3 is one of the most robust deficits involved in schizophrenia. Previous research with catecholaminergic agonists or releasers such as amphetamines have used doses too small to adequately demonstrate an effect on P3. In this study, we gave 0.45 mg/kg dexamphetamine to healthy volunteers (final n = 18) using both auditory and visual three-stimulus P3 procedures. Dexamphetamine significantly reduced P3 amplitudes to auditory target, rare non-target and standard stimulus amplitudes. The reduction in auditory P3 induced by dexamphetamine was proportional across stimulus types to place

Some basic characteristics of monkey and human acoustic emissions are reviewed and some new data presented. These characteristics are discussed in relation to the sensorineural output of the cochlea. Input--output functions and the frequency dispersal in the waveform of acoustic emissions (AE) from monkeys are described. New findings include changes in the human AE during trains of clicks and sustained suppression of the AE after short bursts of noise of moderate intensity. The similarly of click-evoked AE latencies and whole-nerve action potential (AP) latencies for low stimulus level tonebur

When primates (both human and non-human) learn to categorize simple visual or acoustic stimuli by means of non-verbal matching tasks, two types of changes occur in their brain: early sensory cortices increase the precision with which they encode sensory information, and parietal and lateral prefrontal cortices develop a categorical response to the stimuli. Contrary to non-human animals, however, our species mostly constructs categories using linguistic labels. Moreover, we naturally tend to define categories by means of multiple sensory features of the stimuli. Here we trained adult subjects t

Alterations in learning processes and the neural circuitry that supports fear conditioning and extinction represent mechanisms through which trauma exposure might influence risk for psychopathology. Few studies examine how trauma or neural structure relates to fear conditioning in children. Children (n=94) aged 6-18 years, 40.4% (n=38) with exposure to maltreatment (physical abuse, sexual abuse, or domestic violence), completed a fear conditioning paradigm utilizing blue and yellow bells as conditioned stimuli (CS+/CS-) and an aversive alarm noise as the unconditioned stimulus.
