Alterations in brain connectivity in three sub-regions of the anterior cingulate cortex in heroin-dependent individuals: Evidence from resting state fMRI.

Previous studies that utilized task-based approaches have demonstrated that the chronic use of heroin is associated with altered activity of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). However, few studies have focused on examining the variation in resting-state functional connectivity in heroin-dependent individuals, which might help further understanding the mechanisms underlying heroin addiction. Due to the structural and functional heterogeneity of the ACC, we systematically mapped the resting-state functional connectivity patterns of three sub-regions of the ACC in heroin-dependent individuals,

Tract-based magnetic resonance spectroscopy of the cingulum bundles at 7 T.

The cingulum bundle is a white matter fiber bundle in the human brain that is believed to be implicated in various neurological and psychiatric diseases. Subtle disease-related differences in metabolite concentrations in the cingulum tracts that may underlie these diseases may be detected using MR spectroscopic information. However, to date, limited signal to noise and lack of spatial resolution have prevented a reliable and reproducible measurement of metabolites in the cingulum bundle in vivo. Here we propose a new method that combines MR spectroscopic imaging at 7 T with fiber tracking to s

Understanding retrosplenial amnesia: insights from animal studies.

Bilateral damage in the posterior cingulate region can induce anterograde amnesia. Identifying the potential contributions of the various areas within this heterogeneous region has, however, largely depended on animal research. Within the posterior cingulate region the retrosplenial cortex stands out by virtue of its dense interconnections with the hippocampal formation and anterior thalamic nuclei. Consistent with these connections is the finding from lesion studies in animals that the retrosplenial cortex is necessary for navigation and spatial learning, and that these functions occur in clo

Architectonic subdivisions of neocortex in the gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis).

Squirrels are highly visual mammals with an expanded cortical visual system and a number of well-differentiated architectonic fields. To describe and delimit cortical fields, subdivisions of cortex were reconstructed from serial brain sections cut in the coronal, sagittal, or horizontal planes. Architectonic characteristics of cortical areas were visualized after brain sections were processed with immunohistochemical and histochemical procedures for revealing parvalbumin, calbindin, neurofilament protein, vesicle glutamate transporter 2, limbic-associated membrane protein, synaptic zinc, cytoc

Development of anterior cingulate functional connectivity from late childhood to early adulthood.

Human cerebral development is remarkably protracted. Although microstructural processes of neuronal maturation remain accessible only to morphometric post-mortem studies, neuroimaging tools permit the examination of macrostructural aspects of brain development. The analysis of resting-state functional connectivity (FC) offers novel possibilities for the investigation of cerebral development. Using seed-based FC methods, we examined the development of 5 functionally distinct cingulate-based intrinsic connectivity networks (ICNs) in children (n = 14, 10.6 +/- 1.5 years), adolescents (n = 12, 15.

Reduced brain glutamate in patients with Parkinson's disease.

An understanding of the role played by glutamate (Glu) in idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD) has remained somewhat elusive. Animal models of PD suggest that over-activity of Glu receptors complicates the motor symptoms of PD and that Glu blockade may be a pharmacologic target in PD, whereas patient autopsy studies have proved less convincing for changes in Glu. No previous 1H MRS patient studies have documented changes in glutamate. All but one of these previous studies were performed at 1.5 T. We performed 3 T 1H MRS of the posterior cingulate gyrus in 12 non-demented patients with PD and 12

Localization of arm representation in the cerebral peduncle of the non-human primate.

Motor deficit severity and the potential for recovery in patients with brain injury depend on the integrity of descending corticofugal projections. Clinical assessment of these conditions following subtotal brain trauma requires a comprehensive understanding of the anatomical structures involved in the lesion as well as those structures that are spared. To assist in this endeavor, we investigated motor fiber organization in the crus cerebri of the cerebral peduncle (ccCP) in the rhesus monkey. Fibers originating from the arm representations of the primary (M1), supplementary (M2), rostral cing

Anterior cingulate neurochemistry in social anxiety disorder: 1H-MRS at 4 Tesla.

Recent studies suggest exaggerated responses in the limbic system of patients with generalized social anxiety disorder in response to threat/anxiety-related social situations and aversive conditioning, processes mediated by the glutamatergic system. This single-voxel, high-field 1H-magnetic resonance spectroscopy study examined concentrations of glutamate, and other metabolites, in the anterior cingulate cortex and occipital cortex (control region) of 10 medication-naive patients with generalized social anxiety and 10 matched healthy comparison subjects. Glutamate (relative to creatine) levels

Aromatase in axonal processes of early postnatal hypothalamic and limbic areas including the cingulate cortex.

It has been shown that sexual dimorphic morphology of certain hypothalamic and limbic areas underlie gender-specific sexual behavior and neuroendocrine mechanisms. The key role played by locally formed estrogen in these developmental events has been revealed during a critical perinatal period. In this study, we aimed to document the presence of estrogen-synthetase (aromatase)-immunoreactive elements in the involved limbic system and hypothalamus of the developing rat brain. On postnatal day 5, animals of both sexes were perfusion-fixed, and sections from the forebrain and hypothalamus were imm

Cingulate input to the primary and supplementary motor cortices in the rhesus monkey: evidence for somatotopy in areas 24c and 23c.

We examined the distribution of cingulate projections to the somatotopically related parts of the primary (M1) and supplementary (M2) motor cortices of the monkey by using fluorescent dyes. Labeled neurons were found in layers 3, 5 and 6 of areas 24c and 23c and were heaviest following injections placed in M2. Projections to analogous somatotopic areas in M1 and M2 arose from similar cingulate regions. In area 24c, neurons projecting to the face area of M1 and M2 were located anteriorly, those to the hindlimb were located posteriorly, and neurons projecting to the forelimb area of M1 and M2 we

Compositionality of social gaze in the prefrontal-amygdala circuits.

Social gaze underpins flexible primate communication and can be decomposed into three primitives: gaze content, social state, and gaze duration. To reduce dimensionality and facilitate generalization, the brain needs to represent these primitives in an abstract format. We show that social gaze is governed by a compositional code in the brain. During social gaze interactions in male and female macaques (neural recordings in two males), gaze exchanges were determined by how these primitives were combined, providing evidence for behavioral compositionality. The basolateral amygdala and the anteri

Association between Cortical Gyrification and Major Depression: Clinical Correlates.

UNLABELLED: <p>Introduction: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is one of the most frequent psychiatric diseases worldwide. Growing evidence suggests that cortical gyrification measures may present an early risk marker for depression. Medial views of cortical surface reconstructions provide the basis for a simple, expert-rated measure of cortical gyrification. In this study, we examined left anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) gyrification as a potential marker of MDD. We selected this region of interest based on the limbic-cortical dysregulation model of depression and prior research results. METHO

Infant learning forms lasting memory schemas that influence adult behavior.

Early-life episodic experiences, despite seeming rapidly forgotten, are stored long-term in a latent form. The contribution of this unique hidden memory storage is not understood. Here, we show that contextual memories formed in infant mice are recovered in adulthood following weak behavioral reminders (savings) of the infantile experience. Savings in adults also facilitates new congruent learning but fails to influence other types of hippocampus-dependent learning, and this facilitation is a developmental prerogative. Both infant memory reinstatement and facilitation of new learning in adults

Neural correlates and network dynamics of uncommon semiologies in the cingulo-insulo-opercular network explored with Stereo-EEG.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated five uncommon semiologies associated with suspected cingulo-insulo-opercular network involvement using stereo-electroencephalography (SEEG): smiling, laughter, neck choreoathetosis, face wiping, and arm-over-head pose. METHODS: Among 75 SEEG cases reviewed between February 2023 and August 2024, 11 patients exhibited at least one semiology of interest. Video-annotated peri-onset epochs were analyzed using an in-house MATLAB-based pipeline with band-specific filtering and event-related desynchronization/synchronization (ERDS) analysis across six frequency bands. Anterior Cingulate Cortex Astrocytes Regulate Chronic Itch and Comorbid Negative Emotional Disorders in Mice.

AIMS: The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is widely recognized as a key brain region in modulating itch and itch-associated behaviors. Though neuronal mechanisms are increasingly clarified, the role of ACC astrocytes remains poorly understood. METHODS: By employing a diphenylcyclopropenone (DCP)-induced chronic itch mouse model, we assessed scratching behavior and negative emotions via behavioral tests. Astrocytic morphology was examined through immunofluorescence staining and sholl analysis. Fiber photometry was used to record calcium signals of ACC astrocytes and CaMKII-positive neurons. Ch

Anterior Cingulate Cortex Glutamate Levels and Sensory Integration Are Associated in Individuals With Social Anhedonia: A Comparison Between 3T and 7T MRS.

Deficits in schizophrenia are linked to abnormalities in the glutamate (Glu) system, which are believed to result in neurological soft signs (NSS) and negative symptoms. This study investigated the relationship between Glu levels of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and NSS, particularly sensory integration, in individuals with high and low levels of social anhedonia using 3 Tesla (T) and 7T Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS). We recruited 16 participants with high social anhedonia and 18 with low social anhedonia and correlated their NSS scores with ACC Glu levels. While spectral quality

Myo-Inositol Levels in the Dorsal Anterior Cingulate Cortex Are Associated With Anxiety-to-Eat in Anorexia Nervosa.

While substantial research has focused on general anxiety in anorexia nervosa (AN), eating-related anxiety is insufficiently understood and less is known about its underlying neurobiological mechanisms. We integrated behavioral and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) methods to characterize anxiety-to-eat and to identify its neurometabolic correlates in females with AN (n = 16) and in healthy weight females without a lifetime history of an eating disorder (healthy controls; HC; n = 16). Anxiety-to-eat was assessed via a computer-based task in which participants rated their level of anxiety-t

Hemispheric asymmetries in cortical grey matter of gyri and sulci in modern human populations from South America.

Structural asymmetries of brain regions associated with lateralised functions have been extensively studied. However, there are fewer morphometric analyses of asymmetries of the gyri and sulci of the entire cortex. The current study assessed cortical asymmetries in a sample of healthy adults (N = 175) from an admixed population from South America. Grey matter volume and surface area of 66 gyri and sulci were quantified on T1 magnetic resonance images. The departure from zero of the differences between left and right hemispheres (L-R), a measure of directional asymmetry (DA), the variance of L-

Differences in Cortical Morphology in People With and Without Migraine: A Registry for Migraine (REFORM) MRI Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Structural imaging can offer insights into the cortical morphometry of migraine, which might reflect adaptations to recurring nociceptive messaging. This study compares cortical morphometry between a large sample of people with migraine and healthy controls, as well as across migraine subtypes. METHODS: Adult participants with migraine and age-matched and sex-matched healthy controls attended a single MRI session with magnetization-prepared rapid acquisition gradient echo and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery sequences at 3T.
