Road accidents in children involving light electric vehicles cause more severe injuries than other similar vehicles.

Road accidents in Israel were responsible for 23% of injuries in pediatric population between 2013 and 2017. In recent years, the massive entrance of e-bike and other light electric vehicles (called collectively LEV) into the roads is significantly changing the epidemiology of road accidents among children. The study aims to describe the causes, injury types, and other epidemiological characteristics of children injured in road accident and compare injuries of LEV to regular bicycles and other light non-electric vehicles (called collectively LNEV). This retrospective study included all referra

A price-performance analysis of the protective capabilities of wholesale bicycle helmets.

OBJECTIVE: Although bicycle helmets are an effective countermeasure against head injury, many cyclists do not wear one. One avenue for facilitating widespread helmet use is through community-driven helmet safety initiatives, which often give away or subsidize wholesale helmet models that are manufactured at a low price point. However, the impact performance of such helmets during real-world accident conditions has yet to be explored. The present study seeks to investigate trends between wholesale bicycle helmet price and protective capabilities. METHODS: Nine common wholesale helmet models (p

Prevention of Blast-induced Auditory Injury Using 3D Printed Helmet and Hearing Protection Device - A Preliminary Study on Biomechanical Modeling and Animal.

INTRODUCTION: Repeated blast exposures result in structural damage to the peripheral auditory system (PAS) and the central auditory system (CAS). However, it is difficult to differentiate injuries between two distinct pathways: the mechanical damage in the PAS caused by blast pressure waves transmitted through the ear and the damage in the CAS caused by blast wave impacts on the head or traumatic brain injury. This article reports a preliminary study using a 3D printed chinchilla "helmet" as a head protection device associated with the hearing protection devices (e.g., earplugs) to isolate the

Association of helmet use with traumatic brain and cervical spine injuries following bicycle crashes.

Background: The use of bicycle helmets in preventing traumatic brain injuries (TBI) is frequently cited but data remain inconclusive. Additionally, the effects of helmets on cervical spine injuries (CSI) are debated. Methods: We performed a retrospective review of all adult patients with bicycle crashes presenting to one level 1 trauma center in Wisconsin from 2010 to 2016. Patients were divided into two groups: helmeted and un-helmeted.Results: In total 287 patients were included; 149 un-helmeted (51.9%) and 138 helmeted (48.9%). Helmeted riders had radiographic evidence of traumatic brain inj

Is Youth Football Safe? An Analysis of Youth Football Head Impact Data.

BACKGROUND: The issue of whether sports-related head trauma at the youth level can result in long-term sequelae that may negatively impact the participant has been widely debated. OBJECTIVE: To investigate head impacts in the Summit Youth Football League equipped with helmets using the Riddell InSite impact monitoring system. The monitoring system allowed for analysis of the number of impacts and severity of impacts by player. METHODS: Data were obtained for all 20 members of the youth football team. Impacts were recorded as "low," "medium," and "high" intensity. RESULTS: All 20 players par

Traumatic brain injury among two-wheeled motor vehicle riders in Utsunomiya, Japan: a comparison between mopeds and motorcycles.

PURPOSE: Two-wheeled motor vehicles are dichotomized into mopeds and motorcycles (MCs) based on their engine capacity. While efforts have been made, mostly by European researchers, to evaluate the possible difference in the frequency/severity of riders' traumatic brain injury (TBI) between the two categories, the results have been inconsistent. METHODS: To evaluate whether such differences exist in Japan, a single-center, retrospective observational study was conducted on two-wheeled motor vehicle riders wearing a helmet during high-energy road traffic accident (RTA). Between January 2011 and

Preliminary Investigation of Skull Fracture Patterns Using an Impactor Representative of Helmet Back-Face Deformation.

Military combat helmets protect the wearer from a variety of battlefield threats, including projectiles. Helmet back-face deformation (BFD) is the result of the helmet defeating a projectile and deforming inward. Back-face deformation can result in localized blunt impacts to the head. A method was developed to investigate skull injury due to BFD behind-armor blunt trauma. A representative impactor was designed from the BFD profiles of modern combat helmets subjected to ballistic impacts. Three post-mortem human subject head specimens were each impacted using the representative impactor at thre

Brain injury in sports.

OBJECTIVE: Helmets are used for sports, military, and transportation to protect against impact forces and associated injuries. The common belief among end users is that the helmet protects the whole head, including the brain. However, current consensus among biomechanists and sports neurologists indicates that helmets do not provide significant protection against concussion and brain injuries. In this paper the authors present existing scientific evidence on the mechanisms underlying traumatic head and brain injuries, along with a biomechanical evaluation of 21 current and retired football hel

Probably not. Helmets appear to be no more effective than waiting for natural skull growth to correct the shape of an infant's head.

Biomechanics of subdural hemorrhage in American football: review of the literature in response to rise in incidence.

The number of catastrophic head injuries recorded during the 2011 football season was the highest since data collection began in 1984--the vast majority of these cases were secondary to subdural hemorrhage (SDH). The incidence of catastrophic head injury continues to rise: the average yearly incidence from 2008 to 2012 was 238% that of the average yearly incidence from 1998 to 2002. Greater than 95% of the football players who suffered catastrophic head injury during this period were age 18 or younger. Currently, the helmet industry utilizes a standard based on data obtained at Wayne State Uni

Coronal suturectomy through minimal incisions and distraction osteogenesis are enough without other craniotomies for the treatment of plagiocephaly due to coronal synostosis.

In the last few years, many surgeons have tried to reduce the damage produced during surgical approaches by trying to apply the principles of minimal invasive surgical techniques in every type of surgery. Some endoscopic techniques, added to orthopedic mechanisms, allow us to reduce the size of the incisions needed for the craniosynostosis surgery. We present a conservative surgical option in the treatment of one frequent craniofacial malformation due to synostosis: plagiocephaly due to coronal synostosis. We have operated on 10 patients with unilateral coronal synostosis. In all cases, a uniq

Traumatic hyoid bone fracture in patient wearing a helmet: a case report.

Fractures of hyoid bone are rare and most of the injuries cause by strangulation. Hyoid bone fractures are usually the result of direct trauma to the neck through manual strangulation or hanging, blunt trauma or from projectiles. But hyoid bone fracture caused by helmet strap has not been reported before. We present a young man wearing a helmet had an isolated hyoid bone fractures after a motorcycle-to-motorcycle accident. So, we should be more aware that helmet wearing riders are prone to have this kind of injury.

[The rationale for promotion of bicycle helmet legislation for children up to 18 years].

BACKGROUND: Each year, many children suffer from injuries caused by bicycles, scooters, skateboards, and roller skates accidents. Head injury is the most common cause of death and serious disability in bicycle-related crashes. In various studies the use of bicycle helmets has been proven to be the most effective measure in preventing head injury: the use of bicycle helmets reduced the risk of head and brain injury by 85-88%. Legislation that mandates the use of helmets has been shown to effectively increase helmet use and, therefore, significantly decrease head injuries among riders. COST-BENE

Safety in numbers in Australia: more walkers and bicyclists, safer walking and bicycling.

ISSUE ADDRESSED: Overseas research shows that fatality and injury risks per cyclist and pedestrian are lower when there are more cyclists and pedestrians. Do Australian data follow the same exponential 'growth rule' where (Injuries)/(Amount of cycling) is proportional to ((Amount of cycling)-0.6)? METHOD: Fatality and injury risks were compared using three datasets: 1) fatalities and amounts of cycling in Australian States in the 1980s; 2) fatality and injury rates over time in Western Australia as cycling levels increased; and 3) deaths, serious head injuries and other serious injuries to cy

"Born to be wild". The effect of the repeal of Florida's mandatory motorcycle helmet-use law on serious injury and fatality rates.

In response to political pressure, the state of Florida repealed its mandatory motorcycle helmet-use law for all operators and passengers older than the age of 21, effective July 1, 2000. Using monthly data and a multiple time-series design, the authors assessed the effect of this law change on serious injury and fatality rates for motorcycle riders aged 21 and older. Controls for serious injury and fatality rates for motorcycle riders younger than 21 years of age were included in the analyses. Maximum-likelihood results showed that the repeal of the mandatory helmet-use law in Florida had lit

Crash severity, injury patterns, and helmet use in adolescent motorcycle riders.

BACKGROUND: This study examined crash severity and injury patterns between helmeted and unhelmeted adolescent motorcycle riders. METHODS: Among an initial population of 4,721 junior college students, 1,284 students were involved in 1,889 motorcycle crashes during a 20-month follow-up period. Crash severity was measured by both the type of collision object and the repair cost of motorcycle damage. RESULTS: The incidence rates of crash, injury, hospitalization, and deaths per 1,000 person-years in the cohort were 358, 104, 14, and 1.3, respectively. Compared with helmeted riders, unhelmeted ri
