I'll trade you diamonds for toilet paper: Consumer reacting, coping and adapting behaviors in the COVID-19 pandemic.

In this research, we document some of the many unusual consumer behavior patterns that came to dominate the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. We offer insights based on theory to help explain and predict these behaviors and associated outcomes in order to inform future research and marketing practice. Taking an environmentally-imposed constraints point of view, we examine behaviors during each of three phases: reacting (e.g., hoarding and rejecting), coping (e.g. maintaining social connectedness, do-it-yourself behaviors, changing views of brands) and longer-term adapting (e.g. potentially

Binge eating in Parkinson's disease: prevalence, correlates and the contribution of deep brain stimulation.

Of 96 Parkinson's disease patients surveyed at the University of Florida Movement Disorders Center, one (1%) met diagnostic criteria for binge-eating disorder. Eight (8.3%) exhibited subthreshold binge eating. Psychometric criteria classified problem gambling in 17.8%, hoarding in 8.3%, compulsive buying in 11.5%, hypersexuality in 1.0%, and mania in 1.0% of patients. More overeaters met psychometric criteria for at least one additional impulse-control disorder (67% versus 29%). No more overeaters than non-overeaters were taking a dopamine agonist (44% versus 41%). More overeaters had a histor

The children of parents who receive treatment for binge-eating disorder experience improvements in disordered eating.

OBJECTIVE: Parental eating disorders are associated with disordered eating behaviors and psychopathology in their children, but it is not known whether parent treatment for binge-eating disorder (BED) is associated with changes in child disordered eating behaviors and weight. Benefits or the "ripple" effect of treatment on untreated family members has been described in the obesity literature but not for BED. METHOD: Participants evaluated for two randomized clinical trials for BED were screened for whether they had children. 76 parents completed baseline assessments about a school-aged child;

Impulse-control disorders in Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by bradykinesia, rigidity, postural instability, and resting tremor. Increasingly, Parkinson's disease has been associated with a broad spectrum of non-motor symptoms, such as olfactory loss, sleep disorders, autonomic dysfunction, cognitive impairment, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and apathy. In addition, a minority of Parkinson's disease patients develop compulsive behaviors while receiving dopamine-replacement therapy, including medication hoarding, pathological gambling, binge eating, hyperlibidinous behavior, compulsive

Introduction to the Special Issue: Conceptualization, Assessment, and Treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Co-Occurring Conditions.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has a lifetime prevalence of 1%-2% and typically presents as a chronic condition with significant functional impairment. Comorbidity with OCD is the norm, with 90% of individuals with OCD also meeting diagnostic criteria for a co-occurring condition. Co-occurring conditions can complicate the conceptualization, assessment, and treatment of OCD, such as by intensifying existing symptoms, obscuring differential diagnosis of phenotypically and functionally similar symptoms, and interfering with cognitive behavioral treatment. This two-part special issue reviews

Obsessive-compulsive and related disorders.

Obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCRDs), sometimes referred to as obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders, cause significant impairment and share similar features across several domains, including clinical course, risk factors, and response to treatment. Generally, individuals meeting criteria for one or more OCRDs present with symptoms focused on preoccupations and repetitive behaviors. Sex differences emerge in the clinical presentation of OCRDs, and the associated. Literature emphasizes the importance of considering sex when investigating causal factors, prognosis, and outcomes o

Likely Exacerbation of Psychological Disorders from Covid-19 Response.

Anxiety and fear felt by people around the world regarding the coronavirus pandemic is real and can be overwhelming, resulting in strong emotional reactions in adults and children. With depressive and anxiety disorders already highly prevalent in the general population (300 million worldwide), depression and/or anxiety specifically because of the pandemic response is likely. Moreover, the current state of panic in the face of uncertainty is apt to produce significant amounts of stress. While this situation has the potential to cause psychological disorders in previously unaffected populations,

The association between obsessive compulsive disorder and obsessive compulsive personality disorder: prevalence and clinical presentation.

OBJECTIVES: The relationship between Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD) has been the subject of interest for some time due to the historical assumption that OCPD causes OCD. This study systematically examined the association between OCD and OCPD in terms of prevalence and clinical presentation. The specificity of the association between OCD and OCPD was investigated relative to another axis I anxiety disorder (Panic disorder). DESIGN AND METHOD: Data for this study were drawn from measures taken at initial assessment at a specialist treatm

A NATURALISTIC EXPLORATORY STUDY OF OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVE BIPOLAR COMORBIDITY IN YOUTH.

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence supports the comorbidity between bipolar disorder (BD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in children and adolescents. Our aim is to further explore clinical and treatment implications of this comorbidity, as it appears in clinical practice. METHOD: The sample included 429 consecutive patients with BD and/or OCD as primary diagnoses, followed for a mean period of 6 months (range 4-9 months), 172 with BD (102 males, mean age 13.7±2.9 years), 169 with OCD (118 males, mean age of 13.2±2.7 years) and 88 with comorbid BD+OCD (56 males, mean age 14.2±2.6 years, 52

Hair pulling disorder and skin picking disorder have relatively limited associations with negative emotionality: A meta-analytic comparison across obsessive-compulsive and related disorders.

The obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCRD) chapter in DSM-5 includes two relatively distinct groups of disorders: (1) Compulsive disorders [i.e., obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), hoarding disorder (HD)] and (2) grooming disorders [i.e., skin picking disorder (SPD) and hair pulling disorder (HPD)]. The two groups may relate differently with negative emotionality; however, the literature has produced mixed findings. The current study sought to quantify the concurrent association between negative emotionality and each of the five OCRDs. We conducted

Critical Review of the Use of Second-Generation Antipsychotics in Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders.

Currently, all second-generation antipsychotics are approved for schizophrenia. Many are also approved for bipolar disorder, with some also approved as adjunctive treatment for depression and autism-related irritability. Second-generation antipsychotics are increasingly being prescribed for indications other than those approved by the Food and Drug Administration, such as in dementia, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder to name a few. Obsessive-compulsive and related disorders are a group of disorders characterized by preoccupation and repetitive behaviors. According to the latest edit

Shame in the obsessive compulsive related disorders: a conceptual review.

BACKGROUND: Theoretical and anecdotal support for the role of shame in obsessive compulsive related disorders (OCRDs) is prominent. Developing our understanding of shame׳s role in OCRDs is important to building knowledge about this new diagnostic category. This review aims to consolidate our understanding of shame in each OCRD, through summarizing existing clinical, conceptual, and empirical work. METHODS: We provide an overview of shame, its measurement considerations, and a full review of 110 articles addressing shame in OCRDs. RESULTS: General shame and shame about having a mental illness

Predicting marriage and divorce in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Single (N = 472, 51.7%), married or living in stable cohabitation (N = 375, 41.1%) and divorced or separated (N = 66, 7.2%) patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) were compared in terms of their sociodemographic features, OCD phenotypes, and comorbidity profile. Using single status as a reference group, a multinominal regression analysis found increased age, lower severity of hoarding, increased rates of panic disorder without agoraphobia, and lower rates of dysthymic disorder to be associated with married or stable cohabitation status. Concomitantly, increased age, higher severity

[Classification of obsessivecompulsive disorder: evolution in the DSM-V].

Classification of obsessive-compulsive disorder : evolution in the DSM V. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) criteria were first described in the third edition of Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (DSM), in the 1980's. OCD was then classified as an anxious disorder. Today, a new group in DSM-V included OCD and other closed disorders, called "OCD and related disorders". In this new edition, hoarding, before considered as a symptom of OCD, was isolated in a new disorder called hording disorder. This new family also includes body dysmorphic disorder, trichotillomania and skin

A possible role of hippocampal dysfunction in schizophrenic symptomatology.

The author proposes a pathogenesis for the bizarre, repetitive behaviors frequently seen in deteriorated schizophrenics, i.e., polydipsia, hoarding, pacing, etc. It is argued that such behaviors may have a neurobiology similar to schedule-induced behaviors or incentive-conditioned behaviors described in animal models, which involve the hippocampus, nucleus accumbens, and the neurotransmitter dopamine. Such behaviors are augmented by hippocampal lesions, stress, increased drive state, or dopaminergic agents, and reduced by 6-OH dopamine lesions to nucleus accumbens or antipsychotic agents. Thes

Family functioning in paediatric obsessive compulsive and related disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Research among youths with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) has shown a significant relationship between illness severity, treatment outcome, and the family environment yet little work has been undertaken among the broader class of obsessive compulsive and related disorders (OCRDs) - Trichotillomania, body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), skin picking disorder (SPD), and hoarding. The aim of this study was to (1) review the family functioning literature among paediatric OCRDs, (2) address limitations to previous studies, and (3) highlight areas in need of further research. METHODS: A

The changing epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2.

We have come a long way since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic-from hoarding toilet paper and wiping down groceries to sending our children back to school and vaccinating billions. Over this period, the global community of epidemiologists and evolutionary biologists has also come a long way in understanding the complex and changing dynamics of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus that causes COVID-19. In this Review, we retrace our steps through the questions that this community faced as the pandemic unfolded. We focus on the key roles that mathematical mod

Brief Report: Repetitive Behaviour Profiles in Williams syndrome: Cross Syndrome Comparisons with Prader-Willi and Down syndromes.

This study describes the profile of repetitive behaviour in individuals with Williams syndrome, utilising cross-syndrome comparisons with people with Prader-Willi and Down syndromes. The Repetitive Behaviour Questionnaire was administered to caregivers of adults with Williams (n = 96), Prader-Willi (n = 103) and Down (n = 78) syndromes. There were few group differences, although participants with Williams syndrome were more likely to show body stereotypies. Individuals with Williams syndrome also showed more hoarding and less tidying behaviours than those with Down syndrome. IQ and adaptive ab

Sensory Overresponsivity and Symptoms Across the Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum: Web-Based Longitudinal Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Sensory overresponsivity (SOR) has emerged as a potential endophenotype in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), but few studies have examined SOR in relation to the major symptom dimensions of OCD and to symptoms across the full obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptom spectrum. OBJECTIVE: This study had 2 main objectives. First, we examined the psychometric properties of the SOR Scales in a community-based sample of Spanish adolescents and adults. Second, we identified how SOR difficulties are related to symptoms across the full OC spectrum (eg, OC, body dysmorphic, hoarding, skin-picki

Explanations for variation in cognitive ability: Behavioural ecology meets comparative cognition.

Sara Shettleworth has played a defining role in the development of animal cognition and its integration into other parts of biology, especially behavioural ecology. Here we chart some of that progress in understanding the causes and importance of variation in cognitive ability and highlight how Tinbergen's levels of explanation provide a useful framework for this field. We also review how experimental design is crucial in investigating cognition and stress the need for naturalistic experiments and field studies. We focus particularly on the example of the relationship among food hoarding, spat
