Implementation of HPV testing in Latin America.

Cervical cancer is one of the leading killers among women in Latin America, a region where most countries have not been successful in implementing population-level cytology-based screening programs. This disease is caused by persistent infection with oncogenic HPV; in recent years, more HPV tests have become available and prices have dropped significantly, making it possible for countries to adopt these technologies. Pilot programs that took place in Nicaragua, Mexico, and Argentina showed a high level of efficacy in detecting precancerous cervical lesions and good feasibility and acceptance o

Breastfeeding promotion and priority setting in health.

An increase in exclusive breastfeeding prevalence can substantially reduce mortality and morbidity among infants. In this paper, estimates of the costs and impacts of three breastfeeding promotion programmes, implemented through maternity services in Brazil, Honduras and Mexico, are used to develop cost-effectiveness measures and these are compared with other health interventions. The results show that breastfeeding promotion can be one of the most cost-effective health interventions for preventing cases of diarrhoea, preventing deaths from diarrhoea, and gaining disability-adjusted life years

Effects of age at introduction of complementary foods to breast-fed infants on duration of lactational amenorrhea in Honduran women.

Lactational amenorrhea (LA) is associated with postpartum infertility and is known to be related to breast-feeding frequency and duration, but the exact role of complementary feeding of the infant has not been clearly defined. Data on LA were collected during and after a 2-mo intervention trial in which low-income Honduran women who had breast-fed fully for 4 mo were randomly assigned to one of three groups: continued full breast-feeding until 6 mo (FBF, n = 50), introduction of complementary foods at 4 mo with ad libitum breast-feeding from 4 to 6 mo (SF, n = 47), or introduction of complemen

Dietary assessment tools for children and adolescents in Latin America: a scoping review.

Accurately assessing dietary intake in children and adolescents is essential for understanding dietary patterns and informing public health strategies. In Latin America, rapid nutrition transitions and increasing childhood obesity highlight the need for culturally appropriate, validated dietary assessment tools (DATs). However, methodological challenges and limited regional data hinder effective dietary surveillance. This scoping review identified and characterised DATs used among children and adolescents (5-18 years) in Latin America, examining tool types, features, validation and regional co

Essential medicines in Central America: Analysis of national lists, macroeconomic factors, and alignment with health priorities.

INTRODUCTION: The World Health Organization (WHO) Model List of Essential Medicines guides countries in selecting priority drugs to ensure equitable access to effective treatments. In regions such as Central America, with similar health and socioeconomic contexts, comparing national lists reveals patterns and opportunities for regional harmonization. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional comparative observational study was conducted using public secondary data from the official essential medicines lists of seven Central American countries: Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicara

The role of smoke from cooking indoors over an open flame and parental smoking on the risk of cleft lip and palate: A case- control study in 7 low-resource countries.

BACKGROUND: Cleft is one of the most common birth defects globally and the lack of access to surgery means millions are living untreated. Smoke exposure from cooking occurs infrequently in developed countries but represents a high-proportion of smoke exposure in less-developed regions. We aimed to study if smoke exposure from cooking is associated with an increased risk in cleft, while accounting for other smoke sources. METHODS: We conducted a population-sampled case-control study of children with cleft lip and/or palate and healthy newborns from Vietnam, Philippines, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mo

Burden of Neonatal Skin and Subcutaneous Diseases in Low-Income Countries.

BACKGROUND: Neonates in low-income countries face a high burden of skin and subcutaneous diseases. We evaluated trends, inequalities, and future projections for these conditions from 1990 to 2035. METHODS: Using data from the Global Burden of Disease 2023 study, we analyzed incidence rates and estimated annual percentage changes (EAPC) from 1990 to 2023 across 50 low-income countries. Inequalities were assessed using the slope and concentration indices, and frontier analysis was applied to identify high-burden outliers relative to the socio-demographic index (SDI). Trends were projected to th

Probable scrub typhus-like infection in Colombia: seroconversion and serological reactivity to Orientia spp. among patients with acute undifferentiated febrile illness in Villeta municipality.

BACKGROUND: Scrub typhus, caused by Orientia spp., is a mite-borne disease historically restricted to the Asia-Pacific region. Autochthonous cases have been confirmed in southern Chile, while serological evidence has been reported in Peru, Honduras and Colombia, suggesting wider distribution in Latin America. Identifying recent exposure among febrile patients is essential to evaluate its role in acute undifferentiated febrile illness (AUFI) etiology. AIM: To assess the possible implication of Orientia infection as a cause of AUFI in Villeta, Colombia. METHODS: Between September and December

Management and Control Issues Related to Two Mumps Outbreaks in Houston: Future Implications.

BACKGROUND: Mumps is a highly contagious disease spread by airborne droplets, making control especially difficult in congregate, crowded settings such as shelters and jails. A mumps outbreak in Honduras, starting in 2018 among adults who were unvaccinated, spread northward with Central Americans migrating to the United States. We describe 2 mumps outbreaks in Houston during 2019 among migrants at the Houston Contract Detention Facility (HCDF) and among inmates at the Harris County Jail (HCJ). METHODS: We investigated cases of acute onset parotitis. Three or more mumps cases in a facility was

Antiretroviral therapy and Kaposi's sarcoma trends and outcomes among adults with HIV in Latin America.

INTRODUCTION: Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) remains the most frequent malignancy in persons living with HIV (PWH) in Latin America. We examined KS trends and outcomes from Latin American clinical sites in the era of increased access to antiretroviral therapy (ART). METHODS: Cohorts in Brazil, Peru, Mexico, Honduras, Argentina and Chile contributed clinical data of PWH ≥16 years old from 2000 to 2017, excluding patients with KS diagnosed before clinic enrolment. We compared KS incidence over time using multivariable incidence rate ratios. Predictors of KS before/at or after ART initiation and of morta

Distribution, antifungal susceptibility pattern and intra-Candida albicans species complex prevalence of Candida africana: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Candida africana is a pathogenic species within the Candida albicans species complex. Due to the limited knowledge concerning its prevalence and antifungal susceptibility profiles, a comprehensive study is overdue. Accordingly, we performed a search of the electronic databases for literature published in the English language between 1 January 2001 and 21 March 2020. Citations were screened, relevant articles were identified, and data were extracted to determine overall intra-C. albicans complex prevalence, geographical distribution, and antifungal susceptibility profiles for C. africana. Methods to measure quality of care and quality indicators through health facility surveys in low- and middle-income countries.

OBJECTIVE: Present methods to measure standardized, replicable and comparable metrics to measure quality of medical care in low- and middle-income countries. DESIGN: We constructed quality indicators for maternal, neonatal and child care. To minimize reviewer judgment, we transformed criteria from check-lists into data points and decisions into conditional algorithms. Distinct criteria were established for each facility level and type of care. Indicators were linked to discharge diagnoses. We designed electronic abstraction tools using computer-assisted personal interviewing software. SETTIN

Household air pollution from biomass-burning cookstoves and metabolic syndrome, blood lipid concentrations, and waist circumference in Honduran women: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Household air pollution from cooking with solid fuels affects nearly 3 billion people worldwide and is responsible for an estimated 2.5 million premature deaths and 77 million disability-adjusted life years annually. Investigating the effect of household air pollution on indicators of cardiometabolic disease, such as metabolic syndrome, can help clarify the pathways between this widespread exposure and cardiovascular diseases, which are increasing in low- and middle-income countries. METHODS: Our cross-sectional study of 150 women in rural Honduras (76 with traditional stoves and

Gastric cancer burden and regional disparities among Helicobacter pylori-positive patients in the Americas: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori infection is a significant risk factor for gastric cancer (GC), particularly in populations across the Americas. Previous studies have suggested a link between HP and GC, but variability in prevalence across regions has yet to be fully explored. The aim of this study is to quantify the prevalence of GC in HP-positive patients across the Americas, identifying disparities by country, region, and demographic factors. METHODS: The study followed the PRISMA guidelines and was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42024585790). A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, LILACS/BV

The International Family Study of Nonsyndromic Orofacial Clefts: Design and Methods.

BACKGROUND: The majority of research to understand the risk factors of nonsyndromic orofacial clefts (NSOFCs) has been conducted in high-income populations. Although patients with NSOFCs in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are at the highest risk of not receiving care, global health infrastructure allows innovative partnerships to explore the etiologic mechanisms of cleft and targets for prevention unique to these populations. METHODS: The International Family Study (IFS) is an ongoing case-control study with supplemental parental trio data designed to examine genetic, environmental,
