Suprathel® and water-filtered infrared-A radiation (wIRA) as a new treatment strategy for toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN): A prospective study.

Toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) is a life-threatening condition with a mortality rate of approximately 25 % to 30 %. Early and adequate wound coverage is necessary due to large skin defects. Suprathel® is a modern wound dressing that shows promising results when treating superficial wounds such as scalds, burns and abrasions. Previous reports on wound care in TEN patients using Suprathel® have described radical debridement of the entire affected body surface prior to the application of Suprathel®. However, heavy wound secretion in TEN may result in the loss of a significant portion of Suprath

[Case of hot tub lung with confirmation of exacerbation following jet bath use].

A 49-year-old woman presented with exertional dyspnea. Chest CT revealed patchy areas of ground-glass attenuation and ill-defined centrilobular nodules scattered in both lungs. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid showed lymphocytosis. Transbronchial lung biopsy revealed bronchiolocentric alveolitis and well-formed non-necrotizing granulomas were present. She had used a jet bath before the onset of symptoms and mycobacterial culture revealed the presence of Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) in sputum sample, BAL samples and jet bath water. Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis

Effectiveness and efficiency of aquatic therapy on independence in activities of daily living and mobility in post-acute spinal cord injury: A matched case-control study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Aquatic therapy (AT), though potentially effective, lacks studies on clinical efficacy in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI). A recent study analyzing interviews with rehabilitation professionals on its clinical application reported that the scarce evidence of AT benefits was one of the actual barriers to its successful integration into clinical practice. We seek to provide evidence by comparing independence in activities of daily living (ADLs) and functional ambulation capacity in patients following rehabilitation which included AT and matched controls who followed

Lochgoilhead fever: outbreak of non-pneumonic legionellosis due to Legionella micdadei.

Analysis of case histories from 187 people who had visited a hotel and leisure complex in Lochgoilhead, a village on the west coast of Scotland, indicated that 170 had had an acute illness characterised by headache, fatigue, arthralgia, myalgia, cough, and breathlessness. These symptoms were consistent with Pontiac fever-like illness. Legionella micdadei was isolated from the leisure complex whirlpool spa at the time that 60 of 72 individuals with symptoms seroconverted to L micdadei antigen. This outbreak is thought to be the first of a Pontiac fever-like illness ascribed to L micdadei and th

Emerging Nonsurgical Treatments for Hyperhidrosis.

A variety of available treatment options are available for primary focal hyperhidrosis, and some can be combined to obtain maximum effective results. Most treatment options have only been studied in patients with axillary hyperhidrosis, and more studies are needed to develop therapies for other body regions. Several clinical trials are underway with promising preliminary results; however, there is still a large need for new therapies.

Legionnaires' disease: evaluation of a quantitative microbial risk assessment model.

BACKGROUND: The quantities of Legionella vary considerably from natural waters to water in contaminated domestic hot water supplies, whirlpool spas and cooling towers, with the risk for LD rising as the Legionella counts grow. We currently report the results from our Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment (QMRA) model evaluation. We developed the LD QMRA model to better understand Legionella exposure risks. METHODS: Using an animal data derived model for LD, we calculated risks from estimated exposures for a whirlpool spa outbreak, two hot spring spa outbreaks and compared the results to the

Pseudomonas infections associated with hot tubs and other environments.

Infections due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa are not confined to the hospital intensive care unit. This paper examines the association of P. aeruginosa and several community-acquired infections. Hot tub folliculitis is a recently described disorder occurring in outbreaks among persons who unknowingly immerse themselves in contaminated whirlpools, spas, or swimming pools. The green nail syndrome and other dermatoses are also reviewed. Infective endocarditis, invasive external otitis, and puncture would osteomyelitis are serious infections that carry high risks for the patient and challenge the phys

The influence of cold temperature exposure on markers of bone health in humans: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Studies of cold-dwelling humans show lower bone mineral density (BMD) and greater age-related bone loss. While cold exposure is regularly used for analgesic purposes, prolonged use may unintentionally exacerbate symptoms it aims to treat. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate human evidence on the effects of cold exposure upon markers of bone health. METHODS: This scoping review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines. Elderly Hip Osteoarthritis: A Review of Short-Term Pain Relief Through Non-Weight-Bearing Therapies.

Older individuals with hip osteoarthritis (OA) who have difficulty walking, climbing stairs, or performing daily tasks often find non-weight-bearing (NWB) exercises essential for rebuilding strength and preserving function without further stressing the joints. In addition, those with a higher body mass index (BMI) particularly benefit from NWB therapy, as it alleviates joint pressure while facilitating safe and effective rehabilitation. Thus, NWB interventions, such as manual therapy (MT) and aquatic therapy (AT), are especially critical for older adults aged 60 and above, offering pain relief

Evidence for Rehabilitation Interventions After Acute Lateral Ankle Sprains in Athletes: A Scoping Review.

CONTEXT: Acute lateral ankle sprain (LAS) is a common injury in athletes and is often associated with decreased athletic performance and, if treated poorly, can result in chronic ankle issues, such as instability. Physical performance demands, such as cutting, hopping, and landing, involved with certain sport participation suggests that the rehabilitation needs of an athlete after LAS may differ from those of the general population. OBJECTIVE: To review the literature to determine the most effective rehabilitation interventions reported for athletes returning to sport after acute LAS. EVIDEN
