PURPOSE: To review the current literature on safety, efficacy, and measures of surgeon and patient satisfaction with lidocaine hydrochloride gel as a tool for ocular anesthesia.
METHODS: Pubmed search using keywords "lidocaine gel," "ophthalmic," and "surgery" and compiling cross-references. Twenty-six total references were reviewed, including 15 prospective randomized controlled trials (RCTs, total N = 933, average N = 62), 6 nonrandomized prospective studies (total N = 234, average N = 39), 2 animal studies, 1 microbiologic study, and 2 letters to the editor.

Acute-onset endophthalmitis after cataract surgery is a rare but serious complication. In this study, we identified the clinical profile of acute-onset endophthalmitis after cataract surgery using a retrospective review between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2015 at a referral center in northern Taiwan. Twenty-five eyes of 25 patients with endophthalmitis were included; 60% were male. The mean age at diagnosis was 70.44 ± 1.66 years. The right eye was affected in 44% of patients. PURPOSE: To evaluate the outcome of eyes with large Descemet's membrane (DM) perforation during deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK).

Compound D is a novel arachidonic acid metabolite formed by a cytochrome P-450-dependent mono-oxygenase in bovine corneal epithelium. The structure of compound D was recently identified as 12-hydroxy-5,8,14-eicosatrienoic acid. In the current study, we described the biological properties and the ocular effects of this compound. Intraocular pressure (IOP) is the most important risk factor for glaucoma development and progression. Most anti-glaucoma treatments aim to lower IOP by enhancing aqueous humor drainage from the eye. Aqueous humor drainage occurs via well-characterized trabecular meshwork (TM) and uveoscleral (UVS) pathways, and recently described ciliary body lymphatics. Endophthalmitis is a rare, but serious, intravitreal inflammatory disorder that can arise after cataract surgery. The majority of causative organisms in this destructive infection come from the patient's own periocular flora.
