[Historical development of vaccines. Introduction: Hazards and rationality in the vaccinal approach].

The aim of this paper is to introduce the one hundred years of vaccination that has passed since Louis Pasteur first coined this generic term. According to the late Jonas Salk, vaccinology is a science encompassing all aspects of vaccine from its conception in the laboratory to its production by companies and its application and distribution in the field. In this historical survey I explore how vaccination never consisted of a simple and uniform application of a rational model, but rather diverged along various pathways, several of which were discarded in retrospect as being hazardous, and I a

Whither TMS: A One-Trick Pony or the Beginning of a Neuroscientific Revolution?

Psychiatry has been at the forefront of advancing clinical transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) since the mid-1990s, shortly after the invention of modern TMS in 1985 by Barker. Clinical TMS for psychiatric applications is advancing rapidly, with novel methods and innovations for treating depression, as well as a new clinical indication in obsessive-compulsive disorder. This review summarizes the recent findings and peers into the near future of this fertile and rapidly changing field. It is possible that many, perhaps even most, psychiatrists will be incorporating some form of brain stimul

Stent thrombosis: a clinical perspective.

The invention of intracoronary stents greatly increased the safety and applicability of percutaneous coronary interventions. At this time, >1 million coronary stent implantations are performed each year in the United States. But together with the growing use of stents, stent thrombosis, the most feared complication after stent implantation, has emerged as an important entity to understand and prevent. Adjunct pharmacological therapy, stent design, and deployment technique have been adjusted ever since to reduce its occurrence. The current clinical overview of stent thrombosis ranges from its p

The "white plague" and color: children, race, and tuberculosis in Virginia 1900-1935.

Drawing on a wealth of primary documents, this historical research describes nurses' efforts regarding early 20th century pediatric tuberculosis care in Virginia. Virginia nurses played a leadership role in designing a template for children's care. Ultimately, however, their legacy is a mixed one. They helped forge a system funded by a complicated, poorly coordinated, race- and class-based mix of public and private support that is now delivered through an idiosyncratic web of community, state, and federal programs. However, they also took courageous action, and their efforts improved the lives

Treatment of acute hepatitis C: the success of monotherapy with (pegylated) interferon alpha.

Early control in the acute phase of hepatitis C infection is an attractive therapeutic goal in order to shorten disease duration and infectivity, to prevent chronicity and progression to advanced liver disease and to avoid eventual therapeutic non-response in the later stages of chronic hepatitis C. Over the past decade, different interferon-based treatment options have been developed, which lead to sustained virological response rates of up to 98%. The present article summarizes the successful invention of immediate and delayed strategies in acute hepatitis C monoinfection, critically discuss

Rudolph Weigl (1883-1957)--a scientist in Poland in wartime plus ratio quam vis.

Rudolph Weigl gained a high estimation for his spectacular invention of the first efficient vaccine against typhus fever. Although born a German native speaker, he changed into a great Pole with Polish education and upbringing in a patriotic atmosphere. His scientific career developed in the Universities of Lvov, Cracow and Poznan. For him, academic employment was a constant exploration of practical truths and a response to human needs, and this remained a deep obligation during his lifetime. His vaccine saved millions, particularly during World War II. Despite many nominations, he was never a

BOTOX: a review.

The history of medicine has many amazing stories of odd anecdotes for the treatment of a variety of ailments. Who would have thought that common mold would revolutionize the treatment of infection, or slimy leaches could assist in the resolution of venous congestion? When retching from the effects of food poisoning, or even worse, developing severe paralysis acquired from food contaminated with the anaerobic bacterium Clostridium Botulinum (Botulism), who could have guessed that toxins produced by this bacteria could be used as an effective cosmetic treatment for frown lines and wrinkles? Contact lenses for children are used to correct a variety of conditions. This paper reviews fitting of soft, silicone elastimer, and rigid gas-permeable contact lenses for therapeutic treatment of aphakia, anisometropia, myopia, hyperopia, esotropia, irregular astigmatism, and nystagmus. Cosmetic custom designs are described for the treatment of aniridia, albinism, amblyopia, and corneal disfigurement. Working with children and gaining their trust requires inventiveness and patience. Prescribing contact lenses for them requires developing good cooperation between the child, the parents, and th

Sir William Gowers 1845-1915.

This is a brief review of the life and contributions to neurologic science of Sir William Gowers. He was a neurologist in England in the late 19th century who, before the availability of modern diagnostic aids, established the importance of clinical examination, including history and physical signs, in the diagnosis of neurologic disorders. He was the first neurologist to identify a removable spinal tumor. He arranged for his colleague, Sir Victor Horsley, to remove it and the operation was completely successful. He invented the patella hammer and his book "Manual of Diseases of the Nervous Sy

Female sexuality, social reproduction, and the politics of medical intervention in Niger: Kel Ewey Tuareg perspectives.

This essay explores connections between political institutions, forms of power, and women's health care concerns from a cultural anthropological perspective. I focus on the roles of different medical establishments among the Kel Ewey Tuareg of Niger--Western-European sponsored, central state, traditional herbalism and Islamic scholarship--in creating, maintaining, and disputing these constructs, through the invention and elaboration of disease categories and through the selective application of medical and reproductive models and technology to women. I also explore women's attempts to manage t

The origins of fatherhood: an ancient family process.

Despite appearances to the contrary (fostered by anthropocentric nursery stories), a distinct role for male parents does not exist in nature. Fatherhood was invented by humans during the agricultural revolution about six thousand years ago. Symbolized by the new god-king, it incorporated the mother's originally superior role in primate families--the control or ownership of children. The male deity could even make his own offspring without female help. This inflated political figure was designed to compensate for the male's modest role in procreation, once the facts of life were known. Patriarc

Upper extremity prosthesis user perspectives on unmet needs and innovative technology.

The needs of individuals with upper limb amputation and congenital limb difference are not being fully met by current prostheses, as evidenced by prosthesis rejection, non-wear, and user reports of pain and challenging activities. Emerging technologies such as dexterous sensorized robotic limbs, osseointegrated prostheses, implantable EMG electrodes, and electrical stimulation for sensory feedback have the potential to address unmet needs, but pose additional risks. We plan to assess upper limb prosthesis user needs and perspectives on these new benefits and risks using an extensive quantitati

Disruptive innovations: new anti-infectives in the age of resistance.

This special issue of Current Opinion in Pharmacology is concerned with new developments in antimicrobial drugs and covers innovative strategies for dealing with microbial infection in the age of multi-antibiotic resistance. Despite widespread fears that many infectious diseases may become untreatable, disruptive innovations are in the process of being discovered and developed that may go some way to leading the fight-back against the rising threat. Natural products, quorum sensing inhibitors, biofilm disruptors, gallium-based drugs, cyclodextrin inhibitors of pore-forming toxins, anti-fungals

Leonardo da Vinci and dental anatomy.

Leonardo da Vinci, the Renaissance polymath, is still recognized today-above all for his oil paintings and mechanical inventions. His anatomical studies have attracted less attention, even though he devoted over 30 years of his life to them. This paper outlines Leonardo's career and research methods and focuses on the importance of his medical images for anatomical research and teaching. Following a short presentation of the state of (dental) medicine in the early Renaissance period, it offers a description of five of his cranial drawings that show the anatomy of the teeth, the nervous and vas…
