Auditory processing and speech perception in children with specific language impairment: relations with oral language and literacy skills.

This longitudinal study investigated temporal auditory processing (frequency modulation and between-channel gap detection) and speech perception (speech-in-noise and categorical perception) in three groups of 6 years 3 months to 6 years 8 months-old children attending grade 1: (1) children with specific language impairment (SLI) and literacy delay (n = 8), (2) children with SLI and normal literacy (n = 10) and (3) typically developing children (n = 14). Moreover, the relations between these auditory processing and speech perception skills and oral language and literacy skills in grade 1 and gr

Language and reading abilities of children with autism spectrum disorders and specific language impairment and their first-degree relatives.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and specific language impairment (SLI) are developmental disorders exhibiting language deficits, but it is unclear whether they arise from similar etiologies. Language impairments have been described in family members of children with ASD and SLI, but few studies have quantified them. In this study, we examined IQ, language, and reading abilities of ASD and SLI children and their first-degree relatives to address whether the language difficulties observed in some children with ASD are familial and to better understand the degree of overlap between these disorders

Improving early language and literacy skills: differential effects of an oral language versus a phonology with reading intervention.

BACKGROUND: This study compares the efficacy of two school-based intervention programmes (Phonology with Reading (P + R) and Oral Language (OL)) for children with poor oral language at school entry. METHODS: Following screening of 960 children, 152 children (mean age 4;09) were selected from 19 schools on the basis of poor vocabulary and verbal reasoning skills and randomly allocated to either the P + R programme or the OL programme. Both groups of children received 20 weeks of daily intervention alternating between small group and individual sessions, delivered by trained teaching assistants

Educational provision for children with specific speech and language difficulties: perspectives of speech and language therapy service managers.

BACKGROUND: Children with specific speech and language difficulties (SSLD) pose a challenge to the education system, and to speech and language therapists who support them, as a result of their language needs and associated educational and social-behavioural difficulties. The development of inclusion raises questions regarding appropriate provision, whether the tradition of language units or full inclusion into mainstream schools. AIMS: To gather the views of speech and language therapy service managers in England and Wales regarding approaches to service delivery, terminology and decision-ma

Nonword repetition and language development in 4-year-old children with and without a history of early language delay.

PURPOSE: This study examined the usefulness of the Nonword Repetition Test (NRT; C. Dollaghan & T. F. Campbell, 1998) with 4-year-old children and the relationship among the NRT, language, and other aspects of mental processing. METHOD: The NRT was administered to 64 children at 4 years of age; 44 had a history of typical language development (HTD), and 20 had a history of language delay (HLD) at 16 months of age. Study 1 compared methods of scoring phoneme errors to determine whether the NRT was appropriate for this age group. Study 2 examined whether the NRT differentiated HTD from HLD. Stu

Promoting awareness of open access publishing in speech-language therapy and audiology: Lessons from multilingual language assessment research.

Access to speech-language therapy (SLT) and audiology (AUD) research is critical for clinicians, researchers, policymakers and the public to fulfil the professional scope of practice, support advocacy and enable evidence-based service delivery. However, research locked behind paywalls disproportionately limits access for underserved communities and for clinician-researchers seeking tools in languages with scarce resources. Limited access to clinically applicable research disproportionately affects individuals needing SLT and/or AUD services in under-resourced languages and populations, where c

Identifying delays via preschool language scales in children who are deaf/hard-of-hearing and use spoken language.

Standardized language tests guide eligibility for speech-language services in children who are deaf and hard-of-hearing (D/HH) and use spoken language. They must be sensitive enough to detect delays during critical early windows. Clinicians have noted that the Preschool Language Scale-Fifth Edition (PLS-5) may lack sensitivity to spoken language delays in young D/HH children, risking under-identification for intervention. We retrospectively compared standard scores from PLS-5 and Oral and Written Language Scales-Second Edition (OWLS-II) in 39 children using hearing aids and/or cochlear implant

Comparing traditional natural language processing and large language models for mental health status classification: a multi-model evaluation.

The substantial increase in mental health disorders globally necessitates scalable, accurate tools for detecting and classifying these conditions in digital environments. This study addresses the critical challenge of automated mental health classification by comparing three distinct computational approaches: (1) Traditional Natural Language Processing (NLP) with advanced feature engineering, (2) Prompt-engineered large language models (LLMs), and (3) Fine-tuned LLMs. The dataset consisted of over 51,000 publicly available text statements from social media platforms, tagged with seven mental h

A Novel Chain-of-Thought Reasoning Approach for Alzheimer's Disease Detection Using Large Language and Vision-Language Models.

In response to the rapid onset of super-aged societies and the growing prevalence of dementia, our research proposes a multimodal, on-device large language model (LLM)-based agent designed for comprehensive elderly care. Unlike traditional models focused only on dementia diagnosis, our approach leverages a compact, privacy-preserving LLM as the core technology, enabling a wide range of support functions-including cognitive assessment-directly on the device. The pipeline begins with automatic speech recognition (ASR) to convert user speech into text, followed by a vision-language model (VLM) th

Oral language interventions can improve language outcomes in children with neurodevelopmental disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Young people who fail to develop language as expected face significant challenges in all aspects of life. Unfortunately, language disorders are common, either as a distinct condition (e.g., Developmental Language Disorder) or as a part of another neurodevelopmental condition (e.g., autism). Finding ways to attenuate language problems through intervention has the potential to yield great benefits not only for the individual but also for society as a whole. OBJECTIVES: This meta-analytic review examined the effect of oral language interventions for children with neurodevelopmental d

Iconicity and transparency in Dutch Sign Language.

Iconicity in sign languages, visually motivated relationships between form and meaning, is closely tied to transparency, or the guessability of meaning based on its form. Yet, how to best measure this relationship remains contentious. This study compares iconicity ratings and transparency scores for 1412 lexical signs in Dutch Sign Language (Nederlandse Gebarentaal, NGT) across deaf NGT signers and Dutch and German non-signers. In this paper, we show that iconicity is perceived differently by the different groups of raters and replicate past findings that signers perceive signs from their own

The cerebellar components of the human language network.

Despite ample evidence of cerebellar contributions to cognition, including language, its precise role remains debated. We systematically characterize cerebellar language-responsive regions using precision fMRI. We identify four cerebellar regions that respond to language across modalities (experiments 1a and 1b, n = 754). One region-spanning Crus I/II/lobule VIIb-is selective for language relative to diverse non-linguistic tasks (experiments 2a-2f, n = 732), and the rest exhibit mixed selectivity. Similar to the neocortical language system, the language-selective region is engaged during compr

Learning the language of protein-protein interactions.

Protein Language Models (PLMs) trained on large databases of protein sequences have proven effective in modeling protein biology across a wide range of applications. However, while PLMs excel at capturing individual protein properties, they face challenges in natively representing protein-protein interactions (PPIs), which are crucial to understanding cellular processes and disease mechanisms. Here, we introduce MINT, a PLM specifically designed to model sets of interacting proteins in a contextual and scalable manner. Using unsupervised training on a large curated PPI dataset derived from the
