INTRODUCTION: Acquired swallowing impairment is a major public health issue that often leads to increased morbidity and slower recovery. Speech and language therapists (SLTs) have taken the lead in the assessment and treatment of dysphagia, which is reflected in guidelines where early intervention is recommended. This is in addition to the central role that SLTs play in the management of acquired communication impairments since research indicates that patients with communication difficulties benefit from early and intensive therapy by SLTs. This increasing demand for SLTs is expected to cause

Purpose This study investigated the extent to which speech-language pathologists (SLPs) facilitate parents' completion of homework activities for children with speech sound disorder (SSD). In addition, this study explored factors related to more consistent communication about homework completion and strategies considered particularly effective for supporting this element of parental involvement. Method Licensed SLPs serving at least one child with SSD were invited to participate in an online survey. Questions relevant to this study gathered information regarding (a) frequency of communication

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether the amount of speech and language therapy influences the recovery from poststroke aphasia.
SETTING: A hospital stroke unit and community.
DESIGN: A prospective, randomized controlled trial.
INTERVENTION: Aphasic stroke patients were randomly allocated to receive 5 hours (intensive therapy group, n=51) or 2 hours (standard therapy group) of speech and language therapy per week for 12 consecutive weeks starting as soon as practicable after the stroke. Another 19 patients were recruited for 2 hours per week of therapy and were treated by National Health Service (N

An examination of the empirical evidence for the efficacy of speech and language therapy treatment for adult aphasic patients is undertaken with the aid of meta-analysis which affords a statistical method of systematic data summary and synthesis. Patient characteristics and treatment outcomes are correlated to identify factors that contribute to the demonstration of a treatment effect. One of the most striking results of this retrospective study was the identification of the overwhelming failure to report data or include, in experimental controls, variables that might crucially affect outcome.

BACKGROUND: Specific learning disorder (SLD) of reading skills impacts approximately 7% of children. Speech and reading therapy is currently the gold-standard intervention for improving children's reading abilities. However, intensive interventions are difficult to implement. Recently, numerous studies have investigated the interest of game- and home-based training approaches to enhance children's motivation and facilitate intensive learning activities in home settings. The serious game Poppins Clinical integrates rhythm and specific written language exercises to improve reading skills in chil

Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy, where genetically engineered patient T cells target tumor antigens, has transformed care for hematologic malignancies but requires careful tracking of adverse events (AEs) often documented only in unstructured EHR notes. We evaluated a Large Language Model (LLM)-based approach in UCSF's secure environment to extract AEs, dates, grades, and interventions within 30 days post-infusion for six commercial CAR-T products (2012-2023), benchmarking against two evaluators. Using GPT 4 0314 in a zero shot setting with four prompts (prespecified AEs, non

Dysphonia and dysphagia are highly prevalent in late-stage Parkinson's disease (PD), particularly among patients residing in long-term care facilities, yet evidence for rehabilitation interventions in this population remains extremely limited. With increasing longevity, more patients progress to advanced stages marked by frailty, long disease duration, and treatment-resistant symptoms, making the development of effective therapeutic strategies an urgent clinical priority. Here, we conducted an uncontrolled, single-arm, open-label exploratory pre-post feasibility study to evaluate a 12-session

PURPOSE: Cumulative Intervention Intensity (CII) is a proposed framework for conceptualizing and calculating dose that has been used to quantify intensity of speech-language therapy (SLT) in highly controlled laboratory studies and clinical trials. However, it is unknown whether CII can be applied to characterize the practice patterns of patients undertaking at-home, self-managed SLT. The current study leverages real-world mobile health data to investigate the applicability of CII parameters to self-managed SLT, including the interrelationships between individual CII parameters and their utili

OBJECTIVE: Aphasia recovery depends on neural reorganization, which can be enhanced by speech-language therapy and noninvasive brain stimulation. Several studies suggested that transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) associated with speech-language therapy may improve verbal performance evaluated by analytic tests, but none focused on spontaneous speech. We explored the effect of bihemispheric tDCS on spontaneous speech in patients with poststroke aphasia.
METHODS: In this multicentric controlled randomized cross-over double-blind study, we included 10 patients with poststroke aphasia

INTRODUCTION: Up to 3 percent of the children in France present severe and specific language and/or reading disorders, despite regular remedial therapies. Few studies have measured the effectiveness of treatment administered in a specialist unit.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: The aims of this study, focusing on children diagnosed as dysphasic and/or dyslexic, were: During the academic year 2001-2002, 31 children (18 dyslexic and 13 dysphasic) were attending school in our unit. The teaching program and intensive speech therapy (3 hours/week) were tailored for each child according to his/her specific di

This study involves a preliminary comparison of traditional speech therapy for head trauma patients with therapy assisted by computer. Two subjects were treated in a 'crossover' design to compare the effects of each treatment. While both subjects improved, there was no obvious difference in treatment effectiveness. However, the computer support provided the measures of treatment efficacy which made this comparison possible.

BACKGROUND: Advances in large language models (LLMs) provide a means for scalable tracking of patient symptoms in clinical trials and post-marking surveillance using the electronic health record (EHR). Therefore, we sought to validate symptoms extracted from the EHR using a LLM to scale symptom extraction from the EHR.
METHODS: Across a dataset of 499 randomly chosen clinical notes from patients seen in a neuro-oncology clinic, GPT-4o annotated symptoms (headache, fatigue, nausea, anxiety, difficulties sleeping, numbness and tingling, rash, constipation, and diarrhea) with an average sensitiv

INTRODUCTION: Globally, there is a lack of awareness of rare dementias such as those led by language decline (the primary progressive aphasias, PPA). The main treatment for PPA is speech and language therapy, yet many people are unaware of the benefits and are often not referred on by other health care professionals. Delays in diagnosis can exacerbate a delay in accessing resources such as speech and language therapy which can assist in maintenance of communication and independence. Some people affected by PPA are able to seek out information independently and navigate their own way to these s

BACKGROUND: Telehealth placements in speech and language therapy provide crucial opportunities for both learning and service delivery when clinicians, students and/or clients are separated by factors such as distance or illness. While the use of telehealth placements has increased in recent times, they remain a relatively underexplored phenomenon with limited information available about the perceptions and experiences of practice educators and students.
AIMS: The aim of this study was to explore experiences of telehealth-delivered speech and language therapy services and tele-supervision from

BACKGROUND: Aphasia is a communication disorder affecting more than one-third of stroke survivors. Computerized Speech and Language Therapy (CSLT) is a complex intervention requiring computer software, speech and language therapists, volunteers, or therapy assistants, as well as self-managed practice from the person with aphasia. CSLT was found to improve word finding, a common symptom of aphasia, in a multicenter randomized controlled trial (Clinical and Cost Effectiveness of Computer Treatment for Aphasia Post Stroke [Big CACTUS]).
OBJECTIVE: This study provides a detailed description of th

Healthcare graduates are often characterised as ill-prepared for workplace entry. Historically, research on health professional's work preparedness has focused on the quality of graduates' clinical knowledge, skills and problem-solving. This ignores the role of professional identity formation in determining readiness for clinical practice. Yet, professional identity defines graduate self-perception, how others perceive them and informs clinical behaviour. The scholarship of identity formation at the transition from undergraduate to graduate is characterised by individual (cognitive) rather tha

PURPOSE: This Phase I study investigated behavioral and functional MRI (fMRI) outcomes of 2 intensive treatment programs to improve naming in 2 participants with chronic moderate-to-severe aphasia with comorbid apraxia of speech (AOS). Constraint-induced aphasia therapy (CIAT; Pulvermüller et al., 2001) has demonstrated positive outcomes in some individuals with chronic aphasia. Whether constraint to the speech modality or treatment intensity is responsible for such gains is still under investigation. Moreover, it remains to be seen whether CIAT is effective in individuals with persistent seve
