A rare case of a large mesenteric lymphangioma in a 2-year-old child: Case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION AND SIGNIFICANCE: Lymphangiomas are benign tumors that are typically found in the neck and armpit region but can also occur in other locations. The clinical presentation varies depending on their location and size, and surgical resection is the primary treatment option. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a child who presented with a painless and non-obstructing abdominal mass. The mass was diagnosed and underwent complete surgical resection. Subsequent tissue analysis confirmed that the cyst was a lymphangioma. CLINICAL DISCUSSION: These tumors should be considered in the

Renal cysts, nephrolithiasis, and ovarian cysts in a donkey suspected of having been sexually abused.

A female donkey was thought by its owner to have been sexually abused because it had severe perineal swelling. Besides the perineal swelling and a very small vaginal erosion, there were no other abnormalities at clinical examination. Haematology and blood biochemistry revealed an increased leukocyte count, an elevated blood lactate concentration, and a low ionized calcium concentration. During night the donkey's condition deteriorated and it was euthanized in the morning. At necropsy severe haemorrhages were found within the subserosa of the caudal abdomen. Both kidneys were polycystic, and mu

Abdominal lymphangioma in adults and children.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal lymphangioma is a rare tumour usually classified with mesenteric and retroperitoneal cysts. This experience of abdominal lymphangiomas contrasts the differences between tumours in children and adults. METHODS: Between 1970 and 1996, six patients had surgical resection of an abdominal lymphangioma. RESULTS: There were three children aged 4 years or less and three adults aged 36-76 years. Two children presented with an acute abdomen and one with a rapidly enlarging abdominal girth. Lymphangiomas were located in the mesentery and gastrointestinal tract. In adults, symptoms

Severe Proximal Celiac Trunk Stenosis Without Significant Aortic Atherosclerosis: A Case Report.

A 76-year-old male with a history of gastritis, gastric ulcer perforation, hypertension, and active smoking presented with recurrent chest pain, abdominal pain, and back pain. Workup excluded acute coronary syndrome, pulmonary embolism, aortic dissection, and mesenteric ischemia. CT angiography revealed severe proximal celiac trunk stenosis, an ectatic descending thoracic aorta, bilateral renal cysts, emphysema, and a hepatic hypodensity. Further evaluation demonstrated non-obstructive coronary disease, possibly related to endothelial dysfunction. This case highlights the diagnostic complexity

[Chronic monstrous urine retention].

A 75-year-old male was diagnosed with renal mass at a computed tomography during an examination for extended abdominal girth. A large mesenterical cyst was also detected. The patient had infrequent voiding, which he had trained over many years as a taxi driver. A basic physical examination led to suspect urinary retention. His creatinine level was normal and he had no hydronephrosis. A renography showed equal function, but prolonged bilateral outflow. The volume extracted by urethral catheter passed 15 l. Absence of hydronephrosis and normal S-creatinine level has not been described in chronic

A fibromatosis case mimicking abdominal aorta aneurysm.

Retroperitoneal fibrosis is a rare fibrosing reactive process that may be confused with mesenteric fibromatosis. Abdominal aorta aneurysm is rare too and mostly develops secondary to Behcet's disease, trauma, and infection or connective tissue diseases. Incidence of aneurysms occurring as a result of atherosclerotic changes increases in postmenopausal period. Diagnosis can be established with arteriography, tomography, or magnetic resonance imaging associated with clinical findings. Tumors and cysts should be considered in differential diagnosis. Abdominal ultrasound and contrast-enhanced comp

Acute intestinal obstruction in Nigerian children.

Over a 7 year period, intestinal obstruction accounted for 41.7 per cent of abdominal emergencies and 1.03 per cent of all paediatric admissions at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital in Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Of the total 76 cases of acute intestinal obstruction, intussuception was seen in 34 (44.7%), peritoneal adhesions in 17 (22.4%), obstructed hernia in 14 (18.4%), roundworm impaction in 4 (5.3%), volvulus in 3 (4.0%) while faecal impaction and mesenteric cysts were encountered in 2 children each (2.6%). Generally the patients presented late to the hospital and this accounted for

Case report: Cavitation of mesenteric lymph nodes as the presenting feature of coeliac disease.

Cystic cavitation of the lymph nodes associated with hyposplenism is a rare and under-recognised complication of coeliac disease. This report encompasses the clinical, radiological and pathological features of this condition, while demonstrating the pivotal role radiological imaging plays in achieving a clinical diagnosis.

Cystic lymphangioma of the mesentery and hyposplenism in celiac disease.

Celiac disease is characterized by intestinal inflammation and mucosal atrophy that improves on a gluten-free diet. Delayed diagnosis can result in diet-refractory disease known as refractory sprue, which is linked to other disorders (intestinal lymphoma, ulcerative jejunoileitis, mesenteric lymph-node cavitation, collagenous sprue, malignancy) and carries a poor prognosis. Here we report the case of a young woman diagnosed with Marsh stage 3C celiac disease with intestinal occlusion due to intra-abdominal cystic lymphangioma mimicking mesenteric lymph-node cavitation, and hyposplenism. Despit

Mesenteric panniculitis presenting as a multilocular cystic mesenteric mass: CT and MR evaluation.

Mesenteric panniculitis is a non-neoplastic, inflammatory process affecting the adipose tissue of the mesentery in adults with slight male predilection. Typical computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings are of either diffuse mesenteric infiltration or nodular mesenteric masses. We encountered a case of mesenteric panniculitis in a 26-year-old woman with the left upper quadrant pain and fullness, in which CT and MRI disclosed a large, ill-defined, multilocular cystic mesenteric mass. After surgery, the diagnosis of mesenteric panniculitis was made. The cystic compone

Torsion, infarction, and rupture of a nongravid uterus: a complication of a large ovarian cyst.

Torsion of a nongravid uterus is rare, as most cases of uterine torsion occur during pregnancy. We report a case of a large ovarian cyst causing uterine torsion, infarction, and rupture. A 57-year-old woman presented with acute-onset abdominal pain and increasing abdominal girth over the past year. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) demonstrated axial rotation and swirling of the uterus and the mesenteric fat, leading to a preoperative diagnosis of uterine torsion. Laparotomy confirmed that the uterine corpus had undergone a 180-degree axial rotation, and further revealed uterine wall

Lymphangioma of the small bowel mesentery: a case report and review of the literature.

Lymphangioma is a rare benign condition characterized by proliferation of lymphatic spaces. It is usually found in the head and neck of affected children. Lymphangioma of the small-bowel mesentery is rare, having been reported for less than 1% of all lymphangiomas. Importantly, it can cause fatal complications such as volvulus or involvement of the main branch of the mesenteric arteries, requiring emergency surgery. Moreover, the gross and histopathologic findings may resemble benign multicystic mesothelioma and lymphangiomyoma. Immunohistochemical study for factor VIII-related antigen, D2-40,

A diagnostic challenge of primary serous borderline tumor involving the peritoneum: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Primary peritoneal serous borderline tumor (PPSBT) is a rare epithelial tumor that is identical to non-invasive peritoneal implants in patients with ovarian serous borderline tumors. CASE PRESENTATION: A 51-year-old woman presented with abdominal swelling. Radiological findings revealed a large, well-defined cystic lesion within the right abdominopelvic cavity, measuring 19 × 14 × 10 cm, without any connection to both ovaries. Given the imaging characteristics, the differential diagnosis primarily included benign cystic neoplasms, mesenteric or peritoneal cysts, a

Nonovarian Mimics of Ovarian Malignancy.

Once a pelvic mass is identified on an ultrasound examination, the first step in the differential diagnostic work up is to determine its origin. Most lateral pelvic masses in women are ovarian in origin, and the distinction between ovarian and nonovarian mimics of ovarian cancer is critical for appropriate clinical and surgical management. Adnexal masses detected on ultrasound can be further characterized by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) when needed. Superior contrast resolution, multiplanar imaging, characteristic signal intensity of common pathology such as dermoid tumors or endometriomas

Biliopancreatic fistula with portal vein thrombosis caused by a pancreatic pseudocyst.

We encountered a very rare case of biliopancreatic fistula with portal vein thrombosis caused by pancreatic pseudocyst. A 57-year-old man was referred to our hospital because of abdominal pain, obstructive jaundice, and portal vein thrombosis due to acute pancreatitis. Computed tomography showed a 7-cm-diameter pseudocyst around the superior mesenteric vein extending towards the pancreatic head, dilatation of the intrahepatic bile duct, and portal vein thrombosis. Endoscopic retrograde pancreatography revealed a main pancreatic duct with a pseudocyst communicating with the common bile duct. Af

Mesenteric cystic lymphatic malformation: a rare case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Mesenteric cystic lymphatic malformation (LM) is a rare congenital benign malformation in adults, and its location in the mesentery of the sigmoid colon is even rarer. CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe a rare case of LM of the mesentery in a 49-year-old woman. The patient was inadvertently identified during a physical examination 1 month earlier. Transvaginal ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed the presence of an intrapelvic mass posterior to the uterus and right anterior to the sigmoid colon. According to the results of the ultrasound, the mass showed hypoechoic

The distended gasless abdomen: a fertile field for ultrasound.

Ultrasonography has proven to be a helpful imaging modality in evaluating the child with a distended gasless abdomen. The presence of an unsuspected mass can easily be detected as well as the presence of ascites and/or abnormally dilated loops of small bowel. Thickened loops of bowel can also be easily detected in the abdomen with very little gas. Closed loop obstruction and intussusception, as well as meconium ileus equivalent (distal intestinal obstruction syndrome), are described.

[A case of endothelial splenic cyst in an infant].

The authors report a case of isolated splenomegaly in a healthy 7-year-old boy, not showing any other clinical or biological anomaly. The radiological examination (selective arteriography of left renal artery) and spleenscan were compatible with an intrasplenic process. The splenectomy was performed. The spleen was large (15/20 cm) and demonstrating a cystic lesion in the inferior pole. Histological examination revealed polycystic formations covered with endothelial type cells and associated with angiomatous multifocal lesions. Differential diagnosis of cystic lesions of the spleen is discusse
