Multimodal Imaging, Tele-Education, and Telemedicine in Retinopathy of Prematurity.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a disease that affects retinal vasculature in premature infants and remains one of the leading causes of blindness in childhood worldwide. ROP screening can encounter some difficulties such as the lack of specialists and services in rural areas. The evolution of technology has helped address these issues and led to the emergence of state-of-the-art multimodal digital imaging devices such fundus cameras with its variable properties, optical coherence tomography (OCT), OCT angiography, and fluorescein angiography which has helped immensely in the process of im

Multimodal imaging of congenital retinal macrovessel with secondary foveal hypoplasia.

Congenital retinal macrovessel (CRM) is defined as a large aberrant blood vessel that traverses through the central macula. It can have large tributaries extending on both sides of the horizontal raphe. The condition is typically asymptomatic. However, visual loss may be reported in case of associated branch retinal artery occlusion, cavernous haemangioma, retinal artery macroaneurysm, retinal deep capillary ischaemia, retinal detachment and vitreous haemorrhage. However, association of CRM and foveal hypoplasia has rarely been reported. We report multimodal imaging in a patient who was present

Multimodal imaging in infectious and noninfectious intermediate, posterior and panuveitis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Given the heterogeneity of uveitis, markers of inflammation vary from patient to patient. Multimodal imaging has proven itself to be critical for accurate evaluation for disease activity and treatment response in uveitis. RECENT FINDINGS: Ultra-widefield (UWF) fluorescein angiography and autofluorescence (AF) as well as optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) have provided insights into disease pathogenesis and monitoring not previously appreciated. In addition to structural retinal imaging, OCT can be used to assess the choroid, the posterior cortical vitreous and

Electromagnetically Transparent Graphene Respiratory Sensors for Multimodal Small Animal Imaging.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) imaging with X-rays are crucial diagnostic techniques in medicine, especially in oncology for evaluating the response to treatment. Body movement causes image blurring and synchronized gating to the respiratory and cardiac cycles is required. Degradation of MRI and CT imaging by the presence of metal in electronic respiratory sensors has limited their use, with a preference for pressure balloons for detecting respiration, but these are cumbersome and insensitive. Here, graphene's role is studied as an electromagnetically transparent

The urachus revisited: multimodal imaging of benign & malignant urachal pathology.

The urachus is a fibrous tube extending from the umbilicus to the anterosuperior bladder dome that usually obliterates at week 12 of gestation, becoming the median umbilical ligament. Urachal pathology occurs when there is incomplete obliteration of this channel during foetal development, resulting in the formation of a urachal cyst, patent urachus, urachal sinus or urachal diverticulum. Patients with persistent urachal remnants may be asymptomatic or present with lower abdominal or urinary tract symptoms and can develop complications. The purpose of this review is to describe imaging features

Brain pharmacology of intrathecal antisense oligonucleotides revealed through multimodal imaging.

Intrathecal (IT) delivery and pharmacology of antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) for the CNS have been successfully developed to treat spinal muscular atrophy. However, ASO pharmacokinetic (PK) and pharmacodynamic (PD) properties remain poorly understood in the IT compartment. We applied multimodal imaging techniques to elucidate the IT PK and PD of unlabeled, radioactively labeled, or fluorescently labeled ASOs targeting ubiquitously expressed or neuron-specific RNAs. Following lumbar IT bolus injection in rats, all ASOs spread rostrally along the neuraxis, adhered to meninges, and were partia

Central serous chorioretinopathy: Current update on pathophysiology and multimodal imaging.

Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC), the fourth most common nonsurgical retinopathy, is characterized by serous retinal detachment most commonly involving the macular region. Although natural history of CSC shows a self-limiting course, patients are known to present with persistent, recurrent, or even bilateral CSC with distressing visual loss. Multimodal imaging techniques for CSC include optical coherence tomography (OCT) with enhanced depth imaging, fundus autofluorescence, fluorescein angiography, indocyanine green angiography, and OCT angiography. Evolution of new imaging techniques in

Insulinoma Due to Multiple Pancreatic Microadenoma Localized by Multimodal Imaging.

CONTEXT: Insulinomas are usually due to a solitary tumor, but they can be challenging to localize. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 66-year-old woman presented with a 1-year history of episodic neuroglycopenic hypoglycemia and was suspected of having an insulinoma. On a supervised fast, she was found to be hypoglycemic at 39 mg/dL, with an insulin of 40 μU/mL 26 hours into the fast and a proinsulin of 35 pmol/L. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging did not localize a pancreatic lesion. Intra-arterial calcium stimulation testing showed a step-up of venous insulin levels at i

Multimodal imaging of bone metastases: From preclinical to clinical applications.

Metastases to the skeletal system are commonly observed in cancer patients, highly affecting the patients' quality of life. Imaging plays a major role in detection, follow-up, and molecular characterisation of metastatic disease. Thus, imaging techniques have been optimised and combined in a multimodal and multiparametric manner for assessment of complementary aspects in osseous metastases. This review summarises both application of the most relevant imaging techniques for bone metastasis in preclinical models and the clinical setting.

Multimodal Imaging in Neurofibromatosis Type 1-associated Nerve Sheath Tumors.

UNLABELLED: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a neurogenetic disorder. Individuals with NF1 may develop a variety of benign and malignant tumors of which peripheral nerve sheath tumors represent the most frequent entity. Plexiform neurofibromas may demonstrate a locally destructive growth pattern, may cause severe symptoms and may undergo malignant transformation into malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs). Whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) represents the reference standard for detection of soft tissue tumors in NF1. It allows for identification of individuals with plexifo

Perspectives for multimodal neurochemical and imaging biomarkers in Alzheimer's disease.

The diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is presently going through a paradigm shift from disease categories to dimensions and toward the implementation of biomarkers to support identification of predementia and even preclinical asymptomatic stages of the disease. We outline the methodological basis of presently available biomarkers and technological methodologies in AD, including exploratory and hypothesis-based plasma and blood candidates, cerebrospinal fluid markers of amyloid load and axonal destruction, and imaging markers of amyloid deposition, synaptic dysfunction, cortical functional

Multimodal imaging in the diagnosis of isolated left ventricular noncompaction.

Left ventricular noncompaction (LNVC), first described in 1984, is a rare congenital cardiomyopathy that is thought to be caused by arrest of normal embryogenesis of the endocardium and the myocardium, and characterized by multiple prominent trabeculations with deep intertrabecular recesses. LVNC can be associated with other congenital cardiac abnormalities such as atrial septal defect and ventricular septal defect, but it can occur in isolation. The clinical manifestations of the disease are variable, ranging from no symptoms to signs of heart failure, systemic emboli, and ventricular arrhyth
