Interventions for ingrowing toenails.

BACKGROUND: Ingrowing toenails are a common problem in which part of the nail penetrates the skinfold alongside the nail, creating a painful area. Different non-surgical and surgical interventions for ingrowing toenails are available, but there is no consensus about a standard first-choice treatment. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of non-surgical and surgical interventions in a medical setting for ingrowing toenails, with the aim of relieving symptoms and preventing regrowth of the nail edge or recurrence of the ingrowing toenail. SEARCH METHODS: We updated our searches of the following

Chemical matrixectomy for ingrown toenails: Is there an evidence basis to guide therapy?

Chemical matrixectomy for ingrown toenails is one of the most common surgical procedures performed on the foot. The procedure was first described in 1945 by Otto Boll, who discussed the use of phenol to correct ingrown toenails. In the years that followed, many variations of technique and method have been described. This article reviews the pertinent literature detailing chemical matrixectomies and advocates the use of an evidence basis for care.

Foot problems in Turner's syndrome.

In a randomized, prospective study, data were collected on 23 girls with Turner's syndrome (TS) and an age- and sex-matched control group of 47 girls in order to document foot problems and to establish their cause. History revealed that 6 (26%) girls with TS had problems with ingrowing toenails compared with none of the control subjects. Compared with the control subjects, girls with TS showed a significantly increased incidence of short, broad feet; hyperextension of the great toes at the interphalangeal joint; toe nail involution; inflammation of the periungual tissues; and intermittent lymp

Effectiveness of Leukocyte and Platelet-Rich Fibrin versus Nitrofurazone on Nail Post-Surgery Bleeding and Wound Cicatrization Period Reductions: A Randomized Single Blinded Clinical Trial.

Background: Leukocyte and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) may be considered a co-adjuvant intervention that may play a key role in blood coagulation and tissue repair after nail surgeries. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of L-PRF versus nitrofurazone on the post-surgical bleeding and wound cicatrization period in patients with bilateral onychocryptosis during surgeries of chemical matrixectomies with 88% phenol solution. Methods: A randomized single-blind clinical trial was registered with the European Clinical Trials Database (EudraCT) with identification number 2016-002

[Case of Scedosporium apiospermum cutaneous soft tissue infection treated with voriconazole].

A 69-year-old man treated with corticosteroids and immunosuppressive agents for acutely exacerbated interstitial pneumonia was found to have an ingrown nail in the left big toe and that suppurated despite treatment by dermatologists. Culture of the pus expressed from the toe yielded Scedosporium apiospermum. The patient suffered liver dysfunction a few days later when treated with intravenous voriconazole (VRCZ), which was discontinued due to the high plasma VRCZ concentration. Discrete erythema and subcutaneous nodules developed in left leg 2 or 3 weeks later. Ultrasonography showed tubular s

Risk factors for infection following ingrowing toenail surgery: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Ingrowing toenails are a common and painful condition often requiring surgical management. Practitioners who perform surgery on ingrowing toenails include orthopaedic surgeons, general practitioners, podiatrists and podiatric surgeons. There has been limited investigation into the specific surgical approaches used by Australian podiatric surgeons for ingrowing toenails, or the associated infection rates for these procedures. The aim of this study was to assess the frequency and type of ingrowing toenail surgery performed by podiatric surgeons, and identify risk factors for post-ope

Comparison of phenol and sodium hydroxide chemical matricectomies for the treatment of ingrowing toenails.

OBJECTIVE: Chemical matricectomy is performed mainly by two agents: phenol and sodium hydroxide. Both agents have excellent cure rates, but there are no data about the comparison of postoperative healing periods. This study was designed to compare the postoperative morbidity rates of sodium hydroxide and phenol matricectomies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-six patients with 154 ingrowing nail sides were treated with either sodium hydroxide or phenol matricectomy. In the postoperative period, the patients were evaluated for the duration and severity of pain, drainage, and peripheral tissue dest

Quality Assessment of YouTube Videos as a Source of Information on Ingrown Toenails.

BACKGROUND: YouTube is one of the most widely used Internet sources, and many patients watch YouTube videos for gathering more information, especially about health problems. This study aimed to investigate the informative capabilities of YouTube videos about ingrown toenails. We hypothesize that most of the shared information is of low quality independent of source and that the attraction effect of videos is unrelated to quality. METHODS: The first 50 videos in the English language using the keyword query ingrown toenail in YouTube search were analyzed. Journal of the American Medical Associa

Relationship Between Hallux Valgus Interphalangeal Deformity and the Recurrence of Ingrown Toenail in Children.

BACKGROUND: An abnormal hallux interphalangeal angle may be an important risk factor for the recurrence of ingrown toenails. METHODS: Sixty pediatric patients who underwent surgery for an ingrown toenail were evaluated retrospectively in terms of recurrence. The patients were divided into two groups. Group 1 included 30 patients (22 boys and eight girls) with hallux valgus interphalangeal deformity. Group 2 included 30 patients (20 boys and ten girls) without toe deformity. RESULTS: The mean ± SD patient age was 12.8 ± 1.42 years and 12.5 ± 1.45 years in groups 1 and 2, respectively. There w

A new and simple suturing technique applied after surgery to correct ingrown toenails may improve clinical outcomes: A randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: In the present study, we investigated the efficacy of a new suturing technique applied after the Winograd procedure has been completed. METHODS: This study was prospective, randomized, and controlled. In total, 128 patients were recruited and divided into two groups. The outcomes of those treated with the new suturing technique (group I) were compared with those of patients treated with the traditional suturing technique (group II), both of which were applied after the Winograd procedure had been completed. The clinical outcomes and recurrence rates of the two groups were compar

[Competent treatment also in "surgical peanuts"!].

Ankle sprains, burns, cuts and lacerated wounds, ingrowing toenail - topics, that are common in the general practitioner's office. Just peanuts? If they are correctly treated, yes, maybe. But if poorly diagnosed and badly treated they turn out to be troublesome for the patient and the doctor - a real "pain in the neck"! Therefore competent treatment is mandatory, also for these "peanuts"!

Presentation of metastatic carcinoma as pedal stress fracture and ingrown toenail.

Metastatic lesions localized to the foot are rare. When present, such lesions are typically associated with a poor prognosis. A good history can help guide the clinician when formulating differential diagnoses for a questionable clinical presentation. We report the case of a patient presenting with findings indicative of a metatarsal stress fracture and an ingrown toenail, which eventually resulted in the diagnosis of metastatic disease from the lung. ACFAS Level of Clinical Evidence: 4.

The surgical management of ingrowing toenail.

A retrospective review has been carried out on 200 randomly selected patients with ingrowing toenail in order to assess the surgical management and its results. There was a predominance of males between the ages of 11 and 30 with an ingrowing toenail. Despite the high recurrence rate following simple avulsion of the toenail, its place in the initial management of the condition is justified. As regards more definitive surgery, total proximal nail bed ablation was found to give the best results. Sepsis at the time of operation neither increased the recurrence rate nor caused severe postoperative

Influence of the kinesiophobia and its pain intensity relationship in subjects with onychocryptosis.

BACKGROUND: Onychocryptosis is a nail deformity that occurs when the side of the nail grows into soft tissue, which causes pain, sepsis and the formation of granulation. The aim of the study was to evaluate and compare different levels of kinesiophobia in subjects with onychocryptosis before and after surgery to eliminate this condition. METHODS: A descriptive and observational study was conducted with a total sample size of 25 subjects with a mean age of 40.96 ± 18.25 years. The pretest sample was composed of the 25 subjects before the surgical treatment of onychocryptosis and the posttest s

[Meliorated surgical procedure of Winograd for recurrent onychocryptosis].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the improvement of surgical procedure in recurrent onychocryptosis and evaluate its efficacy. METHODS: The meliorated procedure was designed based on the Winograd surgical protocol. A total of 145 cases of recurrent onychocryptosis were recruited into this retrospective study. The recurrence rate and the difference between recurrent duration and follow-up period were analyzed statistically. RESULTS: In this series, onychocryptosis was categorized into type I (n = 86), type II (n = 19) and type III (n = 40) respectively. The average follow-up period was 28.72 ± 9.58 mont

Conservative outpatient management of ingrowing toenails.

Twenty-five patients with ingrowing toenails were treated conservatively by inserting cotton wool under the ingrowing nail edge. Seventy-nine percent were relieved of their symptoms after follow up for a mean of 23.7 weeks. Thirty-six percent had a history of previous surgery to the nail, 75% of whom had a good or excellent result. Although conservative management was first described in the eighteenth century and has been reported sporadically since, only a few doctors treat their patients in this way. There is, however, a distinct place for this highly effective, low cost method as the initia

Toenail paronychia.

Paronychia is an inflammation of the tissues alongside the nail. It may be acute or chronic and can be seen in isolation or in association with an ingrowing toenail. Acute paronychial infections develop when a disruption occurs between the seal of the nail fold and the nail plate, providing a portal of entry for invading organisms. The treatment of paronychia associated with an ingrowing toenail is aimed at treating the causal toenail. In paronychia not associated with an ingrowing toenail, antibiotics may cure an early infection but surgical drainage of an abscess is often required. In this c
