Orthodontic approach to treat complex hypodontia using miniscrews in a growing patient.

This article reports orthodontic treatment of a case of hypodontia of five premolars in an 11-year-old female patient with a positive tooth size-arch length discrepancy in both dental arches. The patient had a straight profile with balanced facial growth. Setup manufacture revealed the possibility of achieving ideal occlusion by mesializing permanent molars up to 15 mm, in addition to keeping a primary molar in the dental arch. With the aid of absolute anchorage, the proposed mechanics was performed and the occlusion predicted in the setup was achieved, while profile and facial growth pattern

Dental health assessed more than 10 years after interproximal enamel reduction of mandibular anterior teeth.

INTRODUCTION: We investigated whether interdental enamel reduction using fine diamond disks with air cooling, followed by polishing, leads to iatrogenic damage or reduced interradicular distances. METHODS: Our subjects were 61 consecutive patients who had received mesiodistal enamel reduction of all 6 mandibular anterior teeth more than 10 years previously. Dental caries, bleeding on probing, probing depths, and gingival recessions were assessed with standard techniques. Incisor irregularities and tooth width/thickness ratios were measured on models, and the patients were asked about any incr

Mandibular asymmetry in healthy children.

Facial asymmetry is a naturally occurring phenomenon that is often due to differences in the mandibular dimensions on the right and left sides. The point where normal asymmetry turns abnormal cannot be easily defined, and no standards exist by which a judgement of abnormality can be made. The aim of the present study was to assess mandibular asymmetry in healthy children and its possible fluctuation during growth. The subjects consisted of 182 healthy children (88 girls, 94 boys) who had had an orthopantomogram taken at ages 7 (mean 7.5 years) and 16 (mean 15.9 years). On digitized orthopantom

Epidermolysis bullosa and dental developmental age.

OBJECTIVES: The dental development of permanent mandibular teeth in a small group of children with dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (DEB) was assessed from radiographs and compared to a healthy, age-and-sex-matched control group. METHODS: This was a retrospective radiographic cross-sectional study. The sample consisted of a group of 44 children aged between 4 and 15 years with DEB and healthy, age-and-sex-matched controls. Two quantitative methods of assessing tooth formation were used: (1) a combination of information about tooth length and apex width; and (2) the use of tooth length to pred

Comparison of two methods of space prediction in the mixed dentition.

PURPOSE: This study compares the accuracy of space prediction for the unerupted permanent canines and premolars by a recognized method of mixed dentition space analysis (Moyers technique) vs estimation by simple visual observation (SVO). METHODS: Twenty clinicians with varying levels of dental experience and training blindly assessed study models of 4 intact arches (2 maxillary and 2 mandibular) from 3 patients in the mixed dentition using both Moyers and SVO space prediction methods. Corresponding full-mouth panoramic radiographs were available for each case. Follow-up records of the eventua

Treatment of a patient with a crowded Class I malocclusion and a congenitally missing mandibular incisor.

This case report describes the management of maxillary and mandibular crowding in a patient with facial esthetic concerns and a tooth-size discrepancy due to a missing mandibular central incisor. The treatment included extracting the remaining mandibular central incisor and the 2 maxillary first premolars. The mandibular canines were repositioned to substitute for lateral incisors, and the mandibular premolars were used as canines.

Dental maturation of 18th and 19th century British children using Demirjian's method.

AIM: To compare dental age with chronological age in a group of children born approximately 200 years ago and a group of modern children. METHODS: Dental maturation of 15 skeletal remains (range 3.0-15.1 years) of London children of known age-at-death was compared to an age and sex matched control group of contemporary children (n = 30). The method of Demirjian, Goldstein and Tanner (1973, 1976, 1978) was used to assess maturity. RESULTS: The difference between dental age (DA) and chronological age (CA) for both groups was not significant, suggesting similar maturation over 200 years, howeve

Assessment of enamel hypoplasia in autoimmune polyendocrinopathy-candidiasis-ectodermal dystrophy (APECED).

The features of enamel hypoplasia in a small group of patients with autoimmune polyendocrinopathy-candidiasis-ectodermal dystrophy (APECED) are described. Using a recently developed method, the authors evaluated quantitatively the amount of defect in each tooth by measuring the width of the hypoplastic lesions and dividing the value by the crown height. They then assessed the degree of damage in each tooth type (from central incisors to second premolars) and patient. Canines were the most severely affected among maxillary and mandibular teeth, but all tooth types were involved. Analysing both

Developmental changes in alignment of the lower labial segment.

The purpose of this study was to examine changes in lower incisor alignment at various developmental stages, from the time of eruption to the established permanent dentition and to try to predict the degree of crowding in the permanent dentition from that observed at earlier developmental stages. Forty-eight subjects (20 male, 28 female) with intact mandibular arches were selected from the Belfast growth study records. The lower incisor space condition was measured at each of four developmental stages: (1) initial eruption of the lower permanent incisors; (2) initial eruption of the permanent

Agenesis of permanent maxillary lateral incisors in South Australian twins.

The frequency of agenesis of maxillary lateral incisors (I2) in a sample of South Australian twins was determined, and associations with gender, zygosity, birthweight and dental crown size were investigated. Ten of the 446 twins examined (2.24 per cent) displayed agenesis of one or both I2, a similar frequency to that reported for Australian singletons. Seven of the ten affected individuals were monozygous female twins, including two pairs, while the three affected dizygous twins were each from different male twin pairs. Five pairs of monozygous twins were identified who displayed varying expr

A comparison of four methods of predicting arch length.

1. Four arch length prediction equations (Nance, Johnston-Tanaka, Moyers, and Hixon-Oldfather) were compared by examining pretreatment casts, pretreatment intraoral radiographs, and posttreatment casts of forty-one patients of mixed-dentition age. 2. A comparison of correlation coefficients and slopes of the predicted arch length versus the actual arch lengths revealed that the Hixon-Oldfather method conformed closest to the ideal. 3. No combination of the four methods produced a more accurate equation than the single most accurate method. 4. Neither the sex of the patient nor the type of occl

Monozygosity in twins: a detailed investigation.

The twins presented in this article showed similarities in their physical make-up to a very high degree. Statistically, however, it is the blood picture which holds the "trump card" in this plethora of evidence supporting monozygous twinning, and it is an essential prerequisite in any presentation of this nature. It is perhaps noteworthy that, while only one of the twins sucked his thumb habitually, there was no difference in the degree of postnormality of the posterior teeth but merely a change in the interincisor relation and in the palatal height. It can clearly be seen from the study of th

A quantitative evaluation of the spatial displacement of the gingival zenith in the maxillary anterior dentition.

BACKGROUND: The appearance of gingival tissues plays an important role in the esthetics of the anterior maxillary region of the mouth. The gingival zenith (GZ) is defined as the most apical point of the marginal gingival scallop; however, its quantitative orientation in the apico-coronal (AC) and mesio-distal (MD) directions has not been reported. Thus, this study aimed to quantify the specific spatial displacement of the GZ in the maxillary anterior dentition. METHODS: Bilateral measurements, taken with a digital caliper in maxillary stone casts from periodontally healthy volunteers, were re
