Synthetic anthelmintic drugs not only contribute to the development of pathogen resistance and environmental pollution but also to the development of pathogen resistance. Therefore, identifying the anthelmintic properties of widely used medicinal plants could be of great practical interest to veterinary and human medicine. In our experiment, we evaluated the in vitro survivability of the noninvasive and invasive (L1-2 and L3, respectively) larvae of Strongyloides papillosus and Haemonchus contortus subject to aqueous solutions of ethanolic tinctures of traditional medicinal plants (46 species)

Poxviruses target innate immunity mediators such as tumor necrosis factors, interleukins, interferons, complement, and chemokines. It also targets adaptive immunity such as CD4+ T cells, CD4+ T cells, and B cells. Emerging of the recent epidemic of monkeypox virus (MPXV), a zoonotic disease native to Central and Western Africa, besides the lack of permitted treatments for poxviruses infections, encouraged researchers to identify effective inhibitors to help in preventing and treating poxviruses infections. Natural bioactive components, particularly polyphenolics, are promising for creating pow

The objective of this research was to assess the effectiveness of three specific dried herbs (rosemary, thyme, and oregano) in combating microbial spoilage in sheep lump cheese. This was achieved by comparing them with a control group and cheeses treated with corresponding 1% essential oils (Rosmarinus officinalis, Origanum vulgare, Thymus vulgaris). All cheese samples were vacuum-sealed and stored at 4 °C for 15 days. Analysis of total viable counts of viable bacteria (TVC), coliform bacteria (CB), lactic acid bacteria (LAB), and microscopic filamentous fungi (MFF) was conducted on days 0, 5,

Staphylococcus spp. bacteria are the most frequently involved agents in canine cutaneous infections. Treatment of these infections is based on antibiotic therapy, that often is not effective because of the antibiotic-resistance of the bacterial strains. Cutaneous staphylococcal infections are often complicated by Malassezia yeasts, that may be resistant to the conventional antifungal drugs. The present investigation was aimed to evaluate the in vitro antimicrobial activity of some essential oils (EOs) in view of a potential cutaneous application. In detail, EOs obtained from lemon verbena (Alo

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis, a zoonosis caused by four species of brucella, has a high morbidity. The major cause of brucellosis worldwide is brucella melitensis. Medicinal plants are considered as new antibacterial sources that could replace conventional antibiotics in the treatment of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of some native plants, alone and in combination with some antibiotics, in the treatment of brucellosis.
METHODS: The present experimental in vitro study was carried out to evaluate the anti-brucella activities of essential oils of Ro

Carvacrol is a phenolic monoterpene present in the essential oil of the family Lamiaceae, as in the genera Origanum and Thymus. We previously reported that carvacrol is effective as an analgesic compound in various nociceptive models, probably by inhibition of peripheral mediators that could be related with its strong antioxidant effect observed in vitro. In this study, the anti-hypernociceptive activity of carvacrol was tested in mice through models of mechanical hypernociception induced by carrageenan, and the involvement of important mediators of its signaling cascade, as tumor necrosis fac

Infectious diseases transmitted by food have become a major public health concern in recent years. In the USA alone, there are an estimated 6-33 million cases each year. The list of responsible agents continues to grow. In the past 20 years some dozen new pathogens that are primarily food-borne have been identified. Fruits and vegetables, often from the global food market, have been added to the traditional vehicles of food-borne illness; that is, undercooked meat, poultry, seafood, or unpasteurized milk. Such products are minimally processed and have fewer barriers to microbial growth such as

Foodborne pathogenic biofilms pose significant challenges to food safety due to their enhanced resistance to conventional antimicrobial agents. In this study, we evaluated the synergistic antibiofilm activity of oregano essential oil (OEO) from Lippia graveolens and the lytic bacteriophage phiLLS against six foodborne bacteria. GC-MS analysis achieved a 100% identification ratio, revealing that OEO was mainly composed of carvacrol (58.9%), p-cymene (28.6%), γ-terpinene (2.9%), and caryophyllene (2.6%). The MIC and MBC of OEO were 1 and 2 mg/mL, respectively, for all strains except E. coli BALL

The checkerboard method was used to study the potential interactions between eight essential oils (Basil, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, Mandarin, Oregano, Peppermint, Tea tree, and Thyme) when used as antibacterial agents against Bacillus cereus LSPQ 2872 and Paenibacillus amylolyticus ATCC 9995. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of each essential oil (EO) and the fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC) index for the binary combinations of essential oils (EOs) were determined. According to FIC index values, some of the compound binary combinations showed an additive effect; however, Thyme/T

Biofilm formation is a key virulence factor in Klebsiella pneumoniae and Acinetobacter baumannii, and their coexistence leads to highly drug-resistant polymicrobial biofilms. We tested the antibacterial, antibiofilm, and biofilm-disrupting activities of thyme oil, oregano oil, and their combination against dual species culture of K. pneumoniae and A. baumannii. Chemical composition was characterized by GC-MS. Antibacterial activity was evaluated using agar well diffusion, with MIC and MBC determined by broth dilution. Antibiofilm activities of oils and their combinations were tested using crys

Chicken breast meat is susceptible to lipid and protein oxidation during post-mortem processing and storage, which adversely affects its physicochemical properties, nutritional value, and market acceptability. Most existing research has concentrated on single-component plant extracts as feed additives, whereas the combined effects of multi-plant additives remain insufficiently characterized. This study evaluated the effects of two composite plant-derived feed additives (Group A: Trigonella foenum-graecum, Silybum marianum, and Ginkgo biloba; Group K: Thymus vulgaris, Cinnamomum verum, and Orig

Oregano essential oil has long been known for its health-promoting benefits. Here, we report its activity against viral replication. Oregano oil was found to specifically inhibit lentiviruses, such as human and simian immunodeficiency viruses (HIV and SIV), irrespective of virus tropism, but not hepatitis C virus, adenovirus 5 (ADV5), Zika virus, and influenza (H1N1) virus. Oregano oil's most abundant components, carvacrol and its isomer, thymol, were shown to block virus-target cell fusion while not perturbing other stages of the virus life cycle. We detected changes in virus particle density
