Panoramic Assessment of Root Development in Immature Maxillary Incisors After Treatment with Prefabricated Functional Appliances.

BACKGROUND: Prefabricated functional appliances (PFAs) are widely used for interceptive orthodontic treatment in children, delivering intermittent forces with potential advantages for oral function. This study evaluated the effects of PFA treatment on the root development of maxillary central incisors in children during the mixed dentition stage using panoramic radiographs. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on 77 children in the mixed dentition phase (2020-2025). These were divided into three groups: untreated controls (n = 33); skeletal Class II malocclusion group, treated with t

Dental Anomalies in 1p36 Deletion Syndrome: A Case Report.

This report describes a nine-year, five-month-old Saudi girl with 1p36 deletion syndrome (1p36DS) referred for dental evaluation due to esthetic concerns. Clinical and radiographic assessment revealed multiple carious lesions, poor oral hygiene, dens invaginatus in maxillary incisors, infraocclusion of a primary molar, and, notably, agenesis of all primary and permanent canines except for one retained mandibular primary canine. Additionally, two supernumerary maxillary incisors (mesiodens) were identified, causing severe rotation of adjacent teeth, a combination of dental anomalies not previou

Association between maxillary canine impaction and other dental anomalies: radiological study of a mixed dentition children's cohort from an orthodontic clinic.

PURPOSE: To investigate the significance of association between maxillary impacted canines and various dental anomalies. METHODS: Files of 874 orthodontic patients were evaluated for the presence of maxillary impacted canines. From this sample, a group of 97 patients (39 males and 58 females) with at least 1 impacted maxillary canine consisted the study group. This group was compared to a control group of 97 patients (42 males and 55 females) that was created by random selection from the initial sample without maxillary canine impaction. The impaction diagnosis was made from the panoramic rad

Myofunctional and speech rehabilitation after orthodontic-surgical treatment of dento-maxillofacial dysgnathia.

OBJECTIVES: The lingual dysfunctions play a considerable role in the pathogenesis of dentoskeletal dysmorphisms. The treatment of dento-maxillofacial dysgnathia implies a functional rehabilitation to re-harmonize the stomatognathic system. This study aims to demonstrate the importance of a rehabilitation protocol of functional orofacial parameters at the end of a surgical-orthodontic treatment in order to achieve long-term success. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After orthognathic surgery, facial expression exercises and jaw exercises are prescribed to promote the recovery of neuromuscular function.

Posterior crossbite in the deciduous dentition period, its relation with sucking habits, irregular orofacial functions, and otolaryngological findings.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to assess unilateral posterior crossbite, sucking habits, orofacial functions, and otolaryngological findings in the deciduous dentition. These findings would allow us to establish a preventive program for posterior crossbite, based on interceptive treatment at an early stage of dental development. We would determine the predictive value for posterior crossbite development in correlation with the duration of sucking habits. METHODS: Data were collected on 30 children (13 boys, 17 girls) with unilateral posterior crossbite (mean age, 5.5 years; range, 3.

A randomized clinical study of two interceptive approaches to palatally displaced canines.

This study evaluated the effectiveness of two interceptive approaches to palatally displaced canines (PDC), i.e. extraction of the primary canines alone or in association with the use of a cervical-pull headgear. The randomized prospective design comprised 75 subjects with PDC (92 maxillary canines) who were randomly assigned to three groups: extraction of the primary canine only (EG), extraction of the primary canine and cervical-pull headgear (EHG), and an untreated control group (CG). Panoramic radiographs were evaluated at the time of initial observation (T1) and after an average period of

[Lateral mandibular deviations].

The mandibular laterodeviation is one of the most evident malformations of the face, because it alters the lower third of the face. Etiologically it can be classified into: Static laterodeviations caused by teeth; Static laterodeviations caused by skeleton change: by monolateral hypertrophy (condyle, condyle and neck of the condyle, half mandible hypertrophy); by monolateral hypertrophy (congenital pathological); Dinamic laterodeviations functional. The midline displacement with posterior monolateral cross bite is caused by width discrepancy between the upper and lower dental arch resulting in

Sucking, chewing, and feeding habits and the development of crossbite: a longitudinal study of girls from birth to 3 years of age.

The prevalence of posterior crossbite among pacifier-sucking girls in Falköping, Sweden, was previously found to be 26%. The aim of this investigation was to follow the development of crossbites in pacifier suckers and to determinate the possibility of reducing the prevalence of crossbite by informing and instructing the parents about sucking habits and reducing the time the child has the pacifier in the mouth. Parents of 60 consecutively born girls belonging to St Olof's health district, Falköping, Sweden, were invited to take part in the study. All parents agreed to participate. Five intervi

A Retrospective Evaluation of Conventional Rapid Maxillary Expansion versus Alternate Rapid Maxillary Expansion and Constriction Protocol Combined with Protraction Headgear in the Management of Developing Skeletal Class III Malocclusion.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The reverse pull headgear has been widely used to intercept a developing skeletal Class III malocclusion with maxillary deficiency. Rapid maxillary expansion (RME) is recommended along with the reverse pull headgear because there is disruption of the circummaxillary and intermaxillary sutures. This, in turn, expedites the orthopedic effect of the reverse pull headgear. However, studies have shown that the circummaxillary sutures may not be fully disrupted by the use of RME alone. The protocol of alternate RME and constriction (Alt-RAMEC) has been found to produce much more

Orthodontics in 12-year old children. Demand, treatment motivating factors and treatment decisions.

Ninety-three per cent of all 12-year old patients at a clinic in western Sweden accepted an invitation to take part in a dental examination in order to evaluate early orthodontic treatment. Treatment in the primary or mixed dentition periods should aim at creating normal craniofacial, occlusal and dental development and, if possible, at reducing the need for later, more complicated treatment. The treatment success was low regarding overjet correction but fairly good with regard to diagnosis and treatment of crossbite/forced occlusion, ectopic eruption and congenitally missing teeth. Whether co

Early headgear effects on the eruption pattern of the maxillary canines.

OBJECTIVE: To test the null hypothesis that early headgear (HG) treatment has no effect on the eruption pattern of the maxillary canines in the early mixed dentition. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-eight children (40 boys and 28 girls) with a Class II tendency in occlusion and moderate crowding of the dental arches were randomized into two groups. HG treatment was initiated immediately in the first group. In the second group only minor interceptive procedures were performed during the first follow-up period of 2 years. Orthopantomograms were taken at the baseline, three times at 1-year interval

Physical properties of root cementum: Part 19. Comparison of the amounts of root resorption between the right and left first premolars after application of buccally directed heavy orthodontic tipping forces.

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have used the right and left sides of the same jaw to compare different force levels, types of movement, and durations of forces. However, the amounts of root resorption have not been compared between the right and left sides after applying the same amount of force. The aims of the study were to quantitatively compare the volumes of the root resorption lacunae between the right and left first premolars to determine whether 1 side can serve as a control to the other and to compare the volumes of root resorption lacunae of the first premolars between the maxilla an
