OBJECTIVES: Conventional reporting of postoperative hearing outcomes utilizes a pure-tone averaged air-bone gap (ABG) that is biased toward low frequencies. Consequently, a high-frequency ABG after otologic surgery may go unnoticed. In this study, we evaluate changes in low- and high-frequency ABG following ossiculoplasty.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review.
SUBJECTS AND SETTING: Consecutive series of patients who underwent ossiculoplasty at a single tertiary care center. Patients with pre- and postoperative audiograms were included.
METHODS: Low-frequency ABG was calculated as the mean ABG

OBJECTIVE: To observe the long-term outcome of ossiculoplasty using autogenous mastoid cortical bone in chronic otitis media in-patients.
METHODS: Sixty-one ears of 57 in-patients with chronic otitis media, with or without cholesteatoma, underwent type III tympanoplasty using autogenous mastoid cortical bone as the prosthetic material. Twenty-one ears were treated by canal wall down mastoidectomy and 40 ears by canal wall up mastoidectomy. The follow-up period was 3 to 6 years (average 4.2 years). Pure tone averages for thresholds at 0.5, 1, 2 and 3 kHz were calculated using standard conventi

Optimal hearing is one goal of otologic surgery. This study examines the long-term functional success rate of cartilage as graft material for ossicular chain reconstruction in type III tympanoplasty. A retrospective review of seventy-nine patients having undergone type III tympanoplasty (53 with closed techniques and 26 with open techniques) was made. Lateral graft ("onlay") techniques were used in almost all cases. All operations were performed by one of the authors, a well-established otologic surgeon. Seventy-four percent of the reconstructions were performed in an one-stage procedure. The

BACKGROUND: In otosurgical training, cadaveric temporal bones are primarily used to provide a realistic tactile experience. However, using cadaveric temporal bones is challenging due to their limited availability, high cost, and potential for infection. Utilizing current three-dimensional (3D) technologies could overcome the limitations associated with cadaveric bones. This study focused on how a 3D-printed middle ear model can be used in otosurgical training.
METHODS: A cadaveric temporal bone was imaged using microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) to generate a 3D model of the middle ear. The

This prospective observational study evaluates the role of tympanoplasty type III in cholesteatoma ear disease during same sitting with mastoid surgery using cartilage ossiculoplasty. Forty patients of chronic suppurative otitis media-cholesteatoma disease were recruited in the study. All the patients had extensive cholesteatoma and underwent canal wall down mastoid surgery. Tympanoplasty type III, that is, stapes columella, minor columella, or major columella, was done in each case along with mastoid surgery depending upon the remnant ossicular status. Conchal cartilage graft was used for oss

INTRODUCTION: The middle ear ossicles form a semi rigid chain in the middle of the ear for conduction and amplification of sound waves from the tympanic membrane to the inner ear. Although, our knowledge of the ear ossicles dates back to the 15th century, and various studies have been carried out on their morphometry, morphology, anomalies, embryology, function and structure throughout the world, information about the morphology of middle ear ossicles is meagre in Indian subjects.
AIM: To find out the morphological variations of middle ear ossicles of right and left sides.
