Spatial orientation and balance control changes induced by altered gravitoinertial force vectors.

To better understand the mechanisms of human adaptation to rotating environments, we exposed 19 healthy subjects and 8 vestibular-deficient subjects ("abnormal"; four bilateral and four unilateral lesions) to an interaural centripetal acceleration of 1 g (resultant 45 degrees roll-tilt of 1.4 g) on a 0.8-m-radius centrifuge for periods of 90 min. The subjects sat upright (body z-axis parallel to centrifuge rotation axis) in the dark with head stationary, except during 4 min of every 10 min, when they performed head saccades toward visual targets switched on at 3- to 5-s intervals at random loc

Differential effect of the loop diuretic furosemide on short latency auditory and vestibular-evoked potentials.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the differential effect of the loop diuretic furosemide on the auditory and vestibular (otolith) end organs in the same animals simultaneously. DESIGN AND METHODS: Auditory nerve-brain stem-evoked responses (ABR-generated in the cochlea) and short latency vestibular-evoked responses to linear acceleration impulses (L-VsEP-generated in the otolith organs) were recorded from albino Sabra rats both before and at minute intervals after intravenous injections of the loop diuretic furosemide. In some animals, an equal volume of saline was injected to contr

Vestibular function test anomalies in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is distinguished by the new onset of debilitating fatigue that lasts at least 6 months, concomitant with other symptoms to be described later. Many CFS patients complain of disequilibrium, yet the exact type of the balance dysfunction and its function and its location (peripheral vs. central) have not been described. Herein we report results of vestibular function testing performed on 11 CFS patients. These results revealed no predominant pattern of abnormalities. Patients typically performed below average in dynamic posturography testing, with a significant numb

Bisphenols disrupt differentiation of the pigmented cells during larval brain formation in the ascidian.

The endocrine disruptor Bisphenol A (BPA), a widely employed molecule in plastics, has been shown to affect several biological processes in vertebrates, mostly via binding to nuclear receptors. Neurodevelopmental effects of BPA have been documented in vertebrates and linked to neurodevelopmental disorders, probably because some nuclear receptors are present in the vertebrate brain. Similarly, endocrine disruptors have been shown to affect neurodevelopment in marine invertebrates such as ascidians, mollusks or echinoderms, but whether invertebrate nuclear receptors are involved in the mode-of-a

Ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials to head tap and cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials to air-conducted sounds in isolated internuclear ophthalmoplegia.

OBJECTIVE: The central pathways responsible for ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) to forehead tapping remain to be determined. This study aimed to determine whether the medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF) carries the signals for ocular VEMPs (oVEMPs) in response to this mode of stimulation. METHODS: Twelve patients with isolated unilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO) due to brainstem infarction underwent evaluation of the ocular tilt reaction (ocular torsion and skew deviation), tilt of the subjective visual vertical (SVV), cervical VEMPs (cVEMPs) in response to ton

Unilateral testing of utricular function.

A modified rotatory chair test is reported in which radial acceleration, generated by eccentric displacement of the subject during constant angular velocity, is exploited as a unilateral stimulation to the otolith organs. During constant angular rate rotation, the test subject is displaced laterally on the rotating turntable by 3.5 cm, so that one labyrinth becomes aligned with the rotatory axis while the second - eccentric - labyrinth is solely exposed to the altered gravito-inertial acceleration (GIA). Previously reported results showed that the direction of the response is independent of th

The functioning of otolith organs in individuals with type-II diabetes mellitus.

AIM: Diabetes mellitus (DM), a systemic disease, is a major public health concern. It is possible that micro and macrovascular changes in the inner ear due to DM could affect both auditory and vestibular functioning. However, there is a lack of conclusive evidence for vestibular impairment in individuals with DM. The current study investigated the effects of Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) on the functioning of the vestibular system and its duration dependency. METHODS: Eighty individuals in the age range of 40-70 years (40 with T2DM and 40 age-matched healthy controls) underwent cervical ves

Vestibular Impairment in Hemifacial Spasm Syndrome: A Case Report.

A 52-year-old man presented with left hemifacial spasm (HFS). A magnetic resonance imaging scan showed compression of the left facial nerve at the cerebellopontine angle by a dolichoectatic basilar artery. The neurotological evaluation showed an otolithic deficit, with canalicular preservation and normal hearing. The deficit improved after surgical decompression. No previous report has described the impairment of vestibular function in patients presenting with HFS.

Comparison of linear motion perception thresholds in vestibular migraine and Menière's disease.

Linear motion perceptual thresholds (PTs) were compared between patients with Menière's disease (MD) and vestibular migraine (VM). Twenty patients with VM, 27 patients with MD and 34 healthy controls (HC) were examined. PTs for linear motion along the inter-aural (IA), naso-occipital axes (NO), and head-vertical (HV) axis were measured using a multi-axis motion platform. Ocular and cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (o/c VEMP) were performed and the dizziness handicap inventory (DHI) administered. In order to discriminate between VM and MD, we also evaluated the diagnostic accuracy

Three-dimensional cone beam computed tomography imaging of the membranous labyrinth in patients with Meniere's disease.

CONCLUSION: Three-dimensional cone beam computed tomography (3DCT) images revealed characteristic malformations of the membranous labyrinth of the inner ear in Meniere's disease (MD). The morphology of the membranous region between the vestibular cecum of the cochlea and the saccule of ears with MD was compared to that of healthy ears. The present study supports the hypothesis proposed earlier that reuniting duct blockade is a result of the dislodgement of saccular otoconia. OBJECTIVE: To visualize the membranous labyrinth using 3DCT and to investigate the pathology of MD. METHODS: A prepara

A short latency vestibular evoked potential (VsEP) produced by bone-conducted acoustic stimulation.

In this paper data are presented from an experiment which provides evidence for the existence of a short latency, acoustically evoked potential of probable vestibular origin. The experiment was conducted in two phases using bone-conducted acoustic stimulation. In the first phase subjects were stimulated with 6-ms, 500-Hz tone bursts in order to obtain the threshold V(T) for vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMP). It was confirmed that the difference between bone-conducted auditory and acoustic vestibular thresholds was slightly over 30 dB. The estimated threshold was then used as a refer

Association between vitamin D deficiency and residual dizziness in idiopathic BPPV: Focus on otolith dysfunction and regression insights.

BACKGROUND: Residual dizziness (RD) following successful canalith repositioning maneuvers (CRMs) in idiopathic benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is multifactorial, with vitamin D (VD) deficiency hypothesized to influence otolith-mediated vestibular pathways. OBJECTIVE: To determine the impact of VD deficiency severity on RD incidence and vestibular dysfunction, and to evaluate the effects of VD supplementation on vestibular dysfunction. METHODS: A cross-sectional study enrolled 138 idiopathic BPPV patients with different VD level. Participants were stratified by deficiency severity

Vestibulo-sympathetic interaction and otolith function in postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The association between blood pressure variability (BPV) or heart rate variability (HRV) and the baroreflex is well established. However, the role of the vestibular-autonomic reflex in regulating BP and HR stability has primarily been explored only in experimental studies. We aimed to delineate the association of BPV and HRV with otolith function in postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed data from consecutive patients with POTS recruited between April 2021 and April 2025 at a tertiary referral-based hospital in South Ko

Ocular and cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials in response to bone-conducted vibration in patients with probable inferior vestibular neuritis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Previous evidence shows that the n10 component of the ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential indicates utricular function, while the p13 component of the cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential indicates saccular function. This study aimed to assess the possibility of differential utricular and saccular function testing in the clinic, and whether loss of saccular function affects utricular response. METHODS: Following vibration conduction from the mid-forehead at the hairline, the ocular n10 component was recorded by surface electromyograph electrodes beneath b

Effects of stimulus and recording parameters on the air conduction ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential.

BACKGROUND: Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) have been recorded from the sternocleidomastoid muscle (cervical VEMP or cVEMP) and more recently from the eye muscles (ocular VEMP or oVEMP) in response to air conduction and bone conduction stimuli. Both cVEMPs and oVEMPs are mediated by the otoliths and thereby provide diagnostic information that is complementary to videonystagmography and rotational chair tests. In contrast to the air conduction cVEMP, which originates from the saccule/inferior vestibular nerve, recent evidence suggests the possibility that the air conduction oVEMP
