The biocompatibility of silk fibroin and acellular collagen scaffolds for tissue engineering in the ear.

Recent experimental studies have shown the suitability of silk fibroin scaffold (SFS) and porcine-derived acellular collagen I/III scaffold (ACS) as onlay graft materials for tympanic membrane perforation repair. The aims of this study were to further characterize and evaluate the in vivo biocompatibility of SFS and ACS compared with commonly used materials such as Gelfoam and paper in a rat model. The scaffolds were implanted in subcutaneous (SC) tissue and middle ear (ME) cavity followed by histological and otoscopic evaluation for up to 26 weeks. Our results revealed that SFS and ACS were w

Myocardial infarction as a rare cause of otalgia.

Aim. To present a case referred to our clinic with severe right ear pain but without any abnormal finding during otological examination and diagnosed as myocardial infarction and also to draw attention to otalgia which can occur secondary to myocardial infarction. Case Report. An 87-year-old female admitted with right ear pain lasting for nearly 12 hours and sweating on the head and neck region. On otolaryngologic examination, any pathological finding was not encountered. Her electrocardiogram revealed findings consistent with myocardial infarction. Her troponin values were 0.175 ng/L at 1 hou

Surgical treatment for the aberrant internal carotid artery in the middle ear with pulsatile tinnitus.

Many previous reports have indicated that pulsatile tinnitus caused by an aberrant internal carotid artery (ICA) should not be treated surgically because of the risk of infection or aneurysm formation. We herein describe a case of aberrant ICA treated by middle ear surgery for which we introduced a novel approach. An 84-year-old man was presented with a one-year history of tinnitus in his right ear. Otoscopic examination demonstrated a whitish mass in the antero-inferior quadrant of the tympanic membrane associated with rhythmic pulsation. Images obtained by CT, MRI and MRA revealed protrusion

Pulsatile tinnitus from a spontaneous carotid-jugular fistula: case report.

INTRODUCTION: We describe a patient who presented with unilateral objective pulsatile tinnitus (PT) from an unusual spontaneous fistula between the internal carotid artery (ICA) and the internal jugular vein (IJV). CASE REPORT: The 56-year-old woman presented with unilateral PT without antecedent trauma. A blowing bruit, synchronous with the pulse, was audible with stethoscopic examination of the right carotid, mastoid, and orbital regions. The duplex ultrasound showed high velocity flow over the right ICA. Right carotid angiography demonstrated a high-flow fistula between the ICA and the IJV

Hearing loss in young adults who had ventilation tube insertion in childhood.

It is known that insertion of ventilation tubes can cause damage to the tympanic membrane and hearing deterioration in the long-term. To investigate long-term effects of recurrent otitis media and of ventilation tube insertion, we used a study group (n = 358 subjects), with or without a history of otitis media and/or ventilation tube insertion, derived from a birth cohort that had been followed for 16 years. At 18 years of age, a standardized audiometric and otoscopic examination was performed. We found that ventilation tube insertion in childhood was associated with a mean persistent hearing

Overlay versus underlay tympanoplasty. Comparative study of 122 cases.

INTRODUCTION: In tympanoplasty, the most common two techniques for positioning the graft relative to the remnant of both the tympanic membrane and of the annulus, are the "overlay" and the "underlay" techniques. Each technique has advantages and disadvantages. METHODS: One hundred and twenty-two cases over the age of 8 years who had undergone a tympanoplasty for tympanic membrane perforation secondary to chronic otitis media were included. All patients had a minimum 3-month postoperative otoscopic and audiometric follow-up. RESULTS: of 122 cases, 115 tympanoplasties (94%) were anatomically s

Point prevalence of type B tympanogram in children.

OBJECTIVE: Otitis media with effusion is a common disease; it is primarily a disease of children. Otitis media with effusion was found as the most common cause of hearing impairment among children. The prevalence varied in different populations. Using otoscopy and tympanometry usually gives a valuable indication of the presence of otitis media with effusion. The aim of this study is to determine the point prevalence of type B tympanogram as a diagnostic and indication of the presence of otitis media with effusion. METHODS: This study was carried out during the period September 1997 through to

Primary papillary adenocarcinoma confined to the middle ear and mastoid.

Primary adenocarcinoma is a rare tumor of the middle ear and temporal bone; its most frequent symptoms are hearing loss, otalgia, and facial paralysis. Otoscopic examination of a 27-year-old man revealed purulent discharge in the ear canal, diffuse edema, and hypertrophy of the right tympanic membrane. He presented with a grade III (House-Brachman) facial paralysis and right conductive hearing loss with a history of aural discharge for 6 months, otalgia, and facial weakness for 2 days. Computed tomography of the temporal bone showed an opacity filling the tympanic cavity, antrum, and aditus. T

Congenital peripheral vestibular disease attributed to lymphocytic labyrinthitis in two related litters of Doberman pinscher pups.

Five Doberman Pinscher pups from a litter of 10 (litter A) and 3 of 9 pups from a subsequent mating of the same bitch (litter B) had clinical signs consistent with unilateral or bilateral peripheral vestibular disease. Results of CBC, serum biochemical analysis, urinalysis, ophthalmologic examination, deep otoscopic examination, and CSF analysis were normal in all affected pups. Bacteriologic culture results from CSF were negative and affected pups did not have canine distemper antibody titers in CSF. The most severely affected littermates were euthanatized and necropsied at the owner's reques

Prediction of serous versus purulent otitis media by otoscopy and tympanometry in an animal model.

Non-invasive methods for distinguishing different types of otitis media would have clinical value in predicting otologic morbidity. Two such methods, otoscopy and tympanometry, were used in two experimental models of otitis media to determine whether there are unique otoscopic and tympanometric characteristics of serous and purulent otitis media. A flat (type B or B+) tympanogram and yellow tympanic membrane each had a high likelihood of predicting middle ear effusion in these models, and the best prediction was obtained using both parameters simultaneously. A yellow tympanic membrane color pr

Diagnostic and therapeutic studies in childhood serous otitis media. Results of treatment with an antihistamine-adrenergic combination.

Fifty-five children with their first recognized episodes of serous otitis media were followed over a three-month period. The efficacy of an antihistamine-adrenergic combination (diphenhydramine and pseudoephedrine), the comparative value of various diagnostic studies of middle ear function, and the prognostic importance of information obtained at the first visit were assessed. Compared double-blindly to a placebo, the pharmaceutical preparations did not appear to influence the clinical course, although more drug patients experienced lethargy or relief of symptoms not directly concerned with mi

Video otoscopy in audiologic practice.

Recent advances in endoscopic optics and miniature video camera technology have made video otoscopy (VO) accessible to audiologists in a practical way. Seven categories of VO applications are presented with clinical examples: (1) general examination of the earcanal and tympanic membrane, (2) physician communication/telemedicine, (3) hearing instrument selection and fitting applications, (4) patient education, (5) scope of practice reinforcement, (6) knowledge base/skill growth, and (7) cerumen management.

A case of congenital cholesteatoma in adult patient with intermittent episodes of facial palsy.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Congenital cholesteatoma is a rare entity that arises from epithelial cell rests in the middle ear, parts of temporal bone or even intracranially. However, it can go unrecognized for several years making the consideration of such diagnosis a bit tricky among otologists. CASE PRESENTATION: We are reporting a case of a young female adult who presented with unilateral hearing loss for one year and intermittent episodes of facial twitching in addition to periods of recurrent unilateral facial palsy that happened about three times in the past two years. Rare oto-tricho-tussia/tinnitus: A case report.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Oto-tricho is associated with the symptoms of gag reflex and non-neuropathic tinnitus, which can be treated by removing the hair and its follicle. ABSTRACT: Oto-tricho refers to a disorder of hair growth in the tympanic membrane (TM). In its early stages, it can manifest as symptoms such as tinnitus, chronic pain, cough, and nausea. If left untreated, it can potentially lead to tympanosclerosis, TM micro-perforation, and hearing loss. In this report, we present a case study of a 33-year-old male with hair and follicle growth observed on the left TM. Over the course of th

[Experiences with endoscopic ear surgery of a German tertiary hospital for otolaryngology].

BACKGROUND: The aim of this article is to report on the integration of endoscopic ear surgery (EES) into daily clinical practice. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In a monocentric prospective study, the endoscopy unit was set up during even weeks over a period of 10 months and the procedure was primarily started endoscopically via a transmeatal approach. In odd weeks, the endoscopy was omitted. A total of 60 procedures in 59 patients were evaluated. Points of comparison were intraoperative vision, incision-suture time, postoperative hearing outcome, and postoperative otoscopic findings. RESULTS: With t

B-Cell Lymphoma of the Middle Ear Treated with Multidrug Chemotherapy in a Cat.

Primary lymphoma of the middle ear is rare in cats, and little information has been accumulated on the treatment and course. An 11-year-old spayed female mixed-breed cat was brought to our hospital with facial nerve paralysis, which had been stable using prednisolone for 3 months. She was diagnosed with B-cell lymphoma of the right middle ear after otoscopic sampling, which showed evidence of the filling of bilateral tympanic bullae on computed tomography. Hepatic involvement was suspected, and she was treated with multidrug chemotherapy, resulting in clinical remission. On day 176, magnetic r

Does Hamulotomy during Palatoplasty Have Any Effect on Hearing Ability in Nonsyndromic Cleft Palate Patients? A Prospective, Single Blind, Comparative Study.

The primary goal of palatoplasty is to achieve a tension-free palatal closure ensuring no postoperative complications. Many surgeons fracture the pterygoid hamulus to minimize tension during palatoplasty. However, this maneuver gained criticism by some authors on the grounds that it may lead to Eustachian Tube dysfunction. Our study intended to figure out the relationship of hamulus fracture with the postoperative state of middle ear in cleft palate children. Fifty consecutive cleft palate patients with an age range of 10 months to 5 years were recruited. All the patients were assigned to eith
