Agnosic vision is like peripheral vision, which is limited by crowding.

Visual agnosia is a neuropsychological impairment of visual object recognition despite near-normal acuity and visual fields. A century of research has provided only a rudimentary account of the functional damage underlying this deficit. We find that the object-recognition ability of agnosic patients viewing an object directly is like that of normally-sighted observers viewing it indirectly, with peripheral vision. Thus, agnosic vision is like peripheral vision. We obtained 14 visual-object-recognition tests that are commonly used for diagnosis of visual agnosia. Our "standard" normal observer

Investigating the Causal Role of rOFA in Holistic Detection of Mooney Faces and Objects: An fMRI-guided TMS Study.

BACKGROUND: The right occipital face area (rOFA) is known to be involved in face discrimination based on local featural information. Whether this region is also involved in global, holistic stimulus processing is not known. OBJECTIVE: We used fMRI-guided transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to investigate whether rOFA is causally implicated in stimulus detection based on holistic processing, by the use of Mooney stimuli. METHODS: Two studies were carried out: In Experiment 1, participants performed a detection task involving Mooney faces and Mooney objects; Mooney stimuli lack distinguish

Shared variance across FrACT visual tasks: Robust positive associations but inconclusive latent structure.

A long-standing question in vision science is whether individual differences in visual performance reflect a general visual ability or a set of largely task-specific processes. Previous studies have often reported weak associations across heterogeneous perceptual tasks, challenging the idea of a common visual factor. Here, we asked whether shared variance becomes more evident when visual tasks are conceptually and procedurally similar. One hundred fifty-eight adults completed eight low-level acuity and hyperacuity paradigms implemented in FrACT10: single letter, Landolt C, tumbling E, row of o

Sharpened Visual Memory Representations Are Reflected in Inferotemporal Cortex.

Humans and other primates can robustly report whether they have seen specific images before, even when those images are extremely similar to ones they have previously seen. Multiple lines of evidence suggest that pattern separation computations in the hippocampus (HC) contribute to this behavior by shaping the fidelity of visual memory. However, unclear is whether HC uniquely determines memory fidelity or whether computations in other brain areas also contribute. To investigate, we recorded neural signals from inferotemporal cortex (ITC) and HC of two rhesus monkeys (1 male, 1 female) as they

Task modulation of visual category selectivity at physical and conceptual levels: An ERP study.

Visual perception emerges from dynamic interactions between bottom‑up sensory input and top‑down, task‑driven expectations. This study tested whether task‑related ERP modulations during object categorization depend on low‑level category‑specific features-specifically the amplitude spectrum (AS)-or whether they arise independent of these features. Participants viewed grayscale images of animals and vehicles with either intact or equalized AS, each paired with an "X" or "O." They performed either a category‑relevant task (animal vs. vehicle) or a category‑irrelevant task ("X" vs. "O"). Task dema

Working memory's pointer system is governed by physical objecthood, not spatiotemporal information.

To properly reflect the dynamic environment, the online representations in visual working memory (VWM) must be constantly accessed and modified when the corresponding items change. Such updating depends on a continuous mapping between each VWM representation and a subset of the external environment, instantiated by a "pointer system." If this mapping is disrupted, the representations cannot be updated, and instead VWM removes the unmapped representations and starts anew. During this "resetting" process, people are blind to salient changes in the items whose representations are inaccessible, cr

Children require more evidence to revise beliefs under gradual perceptual change.

Rafetseder et al. (2021) were the first to demonstrate that children have difficulty revising their beliefs when objects morphed from one object (e.g. a rabbit) into another (e.g. a duck). Children aged four to eight reported the second object significantly later than adults. This is surprising, because both children and adults were presented with the same initial information ("it is a rabbit") and were exposed to the same contradictory visual evidence. We conducted three experiments to replicate the results and to and explore reasons for children's delayed belief revision. In Experiment 1 (N

Long-Term Variability in Visual Processing versus Perceptual Stability.

Our brain is in constant change due to neural plasticity, but, still, our experience of the world feels relatively stable to us. Focusing on visual processing, we hypothesize that brain responses to stimuli may change over long periods of time, but in a way that is orthogonal to the dimensions that are relevant to stimulus category discrimination. To test this hypothesis, we acquired and analyzed a magnetoencephalography (MEG) dataset containing recordings from one female adult participant, with several scanning days spanning over 6 months. The participant passively attended to visual stimuli

Binary categorization of ordered stimuli implicitly guides attention during visual search.

Visual search is a fundamental task in the attention research area. One critical factor that affects visual search performance is category information, which shows better search efficiency in the between-category condition than in the within-category condition. However, previous studies have focused primarily on explicit category information (e.g., alphanumeric categories), and whether implicit categorization of sequential information that is not directly observable can also guide attention during visual searches is unclear. To address this question, via five visual search experiments, partici

Presenting segmented images in a rapid serial visual presentation stream improves search accuracy.

Visual search performance is a critical factor in many high-stakes duties, warranting the need for strategies to enhance target detection accuracy. Research using rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) of stimuli shows that observers can detect categorically defined, pre-specified targets even when the presentation rate is rapid, suggesting RSVP as a viable strategy. To investigate how and how well RSVP can improve target detection in complex search arrays, five experiments were conducted to compare search performance between Full-Image search conditions and various RSVP-based conditions. Brief category learning distorts perceptual space for complex scenes.

The formation of categories is known to distort perceptual space: representations are pushed away from category boundaries and pulled toward categorical prototypes. This phenomenon has been studied with artificially constructed objects, whose feature dimensions are easily defined and manipulated. How such category-induced perceptual distortions arise for complex, real-world scenes, however, remains largely unknown due to the technical challenge of measuring and controlling scene features. We address this question by generating realistic scene images from a high-dimensional continuous space usi

How Does Visual Temporal Processing Affect Chinese Character Reading in Children With Dyslexia? From the Perspective of Inhibition.

Given that inhibition interacts with visual temporal processing (VTP), the past evidence regarding the influence of VTP on the Chinese character reading of children with dyslexia may not disclose the whole picture without considering inhibition. Thus, the present study is among the first to investigate VTP and cognitive inhibition as well as their relationships to Chinese character reading. We compared the performances of 62 Chinese-speaking children with dyslexia in primary school (n = 62, Mage = 11.36 years) on VTP and inhibition tasks to those in a chronological-age-matched group (CA; n = 6

The representation of shape and texture in category-selective regions of ventral-temporal cortex.

Neuroimaging studies using univariate and multivariate approaches have shown that the fusiform face area (FFA) and parahippocampal place area (PPA) respond selectively to images of faces and places. The aim of this study was to determine the extent to which this selectivity to faces or places is based on the shape or texture properties of the images. Faces and houses were filtered to manipulate their texture properties, while preserving the shape properties (spatial envelope) of the images. In Experiment 1, multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) showed that patterns of fMRI response to faces and

Flicker fusion thresholds as a clinical identifier of a magnocellular-deficit dyslexic subgroup.

The magnocellular-dorsal system is well isolated by high temporal frequency. However, temporal processing thresholds have seldom been explored in developmental dyslexia nor its subtypes. Hence, performances on two, four-alternative forced-choice achromatic flicker fusion threshold tasks modulated at low (5%) and high (75%) temporal contrast were compared in dyslexic and neurotypical children individually matched for age and intelligence (8-12 years, n = 54 per group). As expected, the higher modulation resulted in higher flicker fusion thresholds in both groups. Compared to neurotypicals, the

Automatic Attention Capture by Threatening, But Not by Semantically Incongruent Natural Scene Images.

Visual objects are typically perceived as parts of an entire visual scene, and the scene's context provides information crucial in the object recognition process. Fundamental insights into the mechanisms of context-object integration have come from research on semantically incongruent objects, which are defined as objects with a very low probability of occurring in a given context. However, the role of attention in processing of the context-object mismatch remains unclear, with some studies providing evidence in favor, but other against an automatic capture of attention by incongruent objects.

Rapid processing of letters, digits and symbols: what purely visual-attentional deficit in developmental dyslexia?

Visual-attentional theories of dyslexia predict deficits for dyslexic children not only for the perception of letter strings but also for non-alphanumeric symbol strings. This prediction was tested in a two-alternative forced-choice paradigm with letters, digits, and symbols. Children with dyslexia showed significant deficits for letter and digit strings but not for symbol strings. This finding is difficult to explain for visual-attentional theories of dyslexia which postulate identical deficits for letters, digits and symbols. Moreover, dyslexics showed normal W-shaped serial position functio

The effect of divided attention on inhibiting the gravity error.

Children who could overcome the gravity error on Hood's (1995) tubes task were tested in a condition where they had to monitor two falling balls. This condition significantly impaired search performance with the majority of mistakes being gravity errors. In a second experiment, the effect of monitoring two balls was compared in the tubes task and a spatial transposition task not involving gravity. Again, monitoring two objects produced impaired search performance in the gravity task but not in the spatial transposition task. These findings support the view that divided attention disrupts the a

Simultaneous pattern electroretinogram and visual evoked potential recordings in dyslexic children.

To help clarify the conflicting evidence of neurophysiologic abnormalities in children with reading problems (dyslexia), we examined pattern electroretinograms and visual evoked potentials to stimulation with checks of 24', 49' and 180', each at 5%, 42% and 100% contrast, in a group of dyslexic children and a group of normal (i.e., normally reading) children. Neurophysiologic difference between the groups was restricted to the visual evoked potential, which showed a significant prolongation of the P100 wave in dyslexic children at the highest contrast (100%) and the smallest checks (24'). Hyperchromatic lenses as potential aids for the presbyope.

It has been suggested that a 'hyperchromatic' lens which enhanced the longitudinal chromatic aberration (LCA) of the eye would increase its depth of focus (DOF) and hence might prove a useful aid to presbyopes who have lost their natural ability to accommodate for different distances. Experiments are described in which high- and low-contrast visual acuity, and contrast sensitivity were measured as a function of object vergence using the naked eye and various levels of effective lens-eye LCA. It was found that doubling the effective lens-eye LCA increased total DOF in the high-contrast acuity t

Pattern electroretinograms in optic neuritis during the acute stage and after remission.

A total of 20 patients with unilateral acute optic neuritis were studied. Each patient had experienced the recent onset of a decrease in visual acuity, a relative afferent pupillary defect, a relative or absolute central scotoma and a colour-vision defect. The pattern-reversal electroretinogram (PERG) of each patient was analysed with regard to the amplitude of the positive and negative components. During the acute stage the amplitude of the positive component was reduced in all patients and that of the negative, in 18 of 20 cases. Parallel to clinical recovery, a steady increase was observed
