Suicidal ideation and self-injurious behavior in adolescents with eating disorders.

INTRODUCTION: The presence of suicidal thoughts and self-injurious behaviors in patients with eating disorders (ED) is well-known; however, this association is currently not defined empirically. The aim of the study is to determine the prevalence of suicidal ideation and self-harm in adolescents with eating disorders. A second objective is to study the association between self-injurious behavior and suicidal ideation, severity of eating disorder symptoms and symptoms of depression and anxiety, motivation to change and perfectionism. METHODOLOGY: We evaluated 109 patients (mean age, 14.74 year

From Shame to Strength: How Mentors Can Help Mentees Navigate Shame.

Medical education's pursuit of excellence often inadvertently fosters a "hidden curriculum" of perfectionism and shame. This culture can transform adaptive striving into maladaptive perfectionism, where a fear of failure leads learners to view mistakes not as growth opportunities but as evidence of moral failings and personal inadequacy. When errors inevitably occur, the potential result is shame or an identity-focused belief that "I am bad." The resulting isolation and self-doubt potentially can lead to imposter syndrome, burnout, and depression. This paper explores the critical role of shame

Orthorexia Nervosa and its association with obsessive-compulsive disorder symptoms: initial cross-cultural comparison between Polish and Italian university students.

There is limited evidence of a link between Orthorexia Nervosa (ON) and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and no definitive conclusions can be drawn. The interplay between socio-cultural context and ON has been poorly investigated as well. Therefore, the objectives of the present study were: (1) to investigate the differences in ON and OCD symptoms and (2) to assess the relationship between ON and OCD symptoms among university students. Six hundred and sixty-six university students participated in the present study: 286 from Poland and 320 from Italy. No age, gender and marital status diffe

Exploring the Involvement of Personal and Emotional Factors and Social Media Body Image-Related Behaviours on Eating Disorder Symptoms and Body Image Concerns in Women and Men.

Background: Eating disorder (ED) symptoms and body image (BI) concerns involve serious risks to the physical and mental health of women and men. Social networking sites have amplified the promotion of idealised body images, contributing to this issue. Objectives: This study examines the link between personal and emotional factors, social media body image-related behaviours, BI concerns, and ED symptoms, as well as the differential role of these factors according to gender. Methods: A cross-sectional design was applied. The participants were 201 Spanish adults (mean age = 28.26; 76.6% women) wh

Assessing cognitive flexibility in anorexia nervosa using eye tracking: A registered report.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive flexibility research in anorexia nervosa (AN) has primarily focused on group differences between clinical and control participants, but research in the general population utilizing the mixed pro- anti-saccade flexibility task has demonstrated individual differences in trait anxiety are a determinant of switching performance, and switching impairments are more pronounced for keypress than saccadic (eye-movement) responses. The aim of the current research is to explore trait anxiety and differences in saccadic and keypress responding as potential determinants of performance

Body dysmorphic disorder: The drive for perfection.

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is an obsessive-compulsive and related disorder that pushes people toward perfection, affecting 5 to 7.5 million people in the US. Individuals with BDD spend a great deal of time focusing on perceived flaws and ways in which to hide these flaws. The time spent on these negative thoughts can interfere with quality of life and the ability to carry out daily tasks. This article discusses BDD, including symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, complications, and the nurse's role.

Determinants of representational and behavioral hyperactivity in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome.

Fibromyalgia is associated with a premorbid hyperactivity. This study examines how contextual and personality factors contribute to premorbid hyperactivity. A total of 45 patients completed questionnaires. The results show that the number of children and the basic bodily needs neglect (and their interaction) explain nearly 50 percent of the variance of hyperactivity. The neglect toward bodily needs completely mediates the relation between self-oriented perfectionism and hyperactivity. This study suggests that hyperactivity itself would not have a pathological value, but that the neglect of bas

Development of a psychological risk indicator and its association with sports injuries in football players.

Evidence suggests that psychological factors such as stress, anxiety, perfectionism, coping resources, and sleep quality may modulate sport-injury risk, supporting an integrative approach to athlete monitoring beyond physiological indicators. This study aimed to develop a composite psychological injury-risk index grounded in the Psycholight framework and examine its association with injury burden in male and female football players. A total of 281 youth-to-senior players aged 16-32 years completed validated self-report measures assessing sport-related psychological characteristics, maladaptive

Identifying the insomnia-related psychological issues associated with hyperarousal: A network perspective.

Hyperarousal, recognized as a fundamental characteristic of insomnia for decades, has yielded limited evidence concerning its direct psychological associations. This study aimed to explore the psychological factors linked to hyperarousal within the framework of interrelated variables. Two independent samples, comprising n = 917 and n = 652 young adults, were included in the study. Employing the first dataset as a discovery sample and the second dataset as a replication sample, network analyses were conducted using 26 variables derived from 17 scales. The objective was to estimate the direct an

Sexual response in obsessive-compulsive disorder: the role of obsessive beliefs.

BACKGROUND: Sexual response in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) research and practice is overlooked. According to the Dual Control Model, satisfactory sexual response is based upon a balance of sexual excitation and inhibition. The assessment of sexual response in OCD may have clinical implications, such as the integration of sex therapy in psychotherapeutic intervention. The present study was aimed at comparing sexual excitation and inhibition levels between OCD patients and matched control subjects, and investigating whether obsessive beliefs might predict sexual excitation/inhibition. The role of disgust propensity and sensitivity on sexual excitations and inhibition in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Sexuality is understudied in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). According to the Dual Control Model, low sexual excitation (SE) and high sexual inhibition (SI) are indicative of a higher probability of experiencing a sexual dysfunction. The present study investigated SE and SI in OCD patients compared with controls. It was hypothesized that OCD patients report lower SE and higher SI than controls. Given their potential role as inhibitors of sexual response, it was hypothesized that in the OCD group higher disgust propensity/sensitivity, contamination/washing symptoms, unacceptable thoughts,

Cognitive behavioral treatment for depressed adolescents: results from a cluster randomized controlled trial of a group course.

BACKGROUND: The group-based CBT intervention, the Adolescent Coping with Depression Course (ACDC), has previously been evaluated within a quasi-experimental design, showing reduction in depressive symptoms compared to a benchmark of similar studies. The aim of our study was to investigate the effectiveness of ACDC within a randomized controlled (RCT) design. METHOD: Thirty-five course/control leaders randomly assigned to provide ACDC or usual care (UC) recruited 133 adolescents allocated to ACDC and 95 to UC. ACDC participants received eight weekly sessions and two follow-up sessions about 3

The impact of stress on motor performance in skilled musicians suffering from focal dystonia: Physiological and psychological characteristics.

Recent investigations have suggested that stress can modulate motor function. However, the impact of stress on motor performance of musicians suffering from focal dystonia (FDM) remains unknown. The current study assessed motor performance in 20 FDM patients and 16 healthy musicians (HM) before and under stress. Stress was manipulated using the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). Motor performance was evaluated based on analysis of electromyographic (EMG) activity and temporal variability, while electrocardiography (ECG) and the level of free cortisol were used to test for objective alterations o

Mental Health in the Youth Athlete.

Though research is inconclusive in being able to determine if young athletes are more or less likely to suffer from mental health disorders compared with their non-athlete peers, there are important psychological considerations that are unique to the athletic population. This includes depression in the context of overtraining and burnout, performance anxiety, perfectionism, psychological sequalae of concussion, and injury as an independent risk factor for depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, and high-risk behaviors. Optimization of mental health care in youth athletes requires continued

Features and management of compulsive exercising in eating disorders.

Compulsive exercising is a common feature of patients with eating disorders. It is reported more frequently by patients with restricting-type anorexia nervosa than with other eating disorders. It is associated with higher eating disorder psychopathology, dietary restraint, general psychopathology, and specific personality features (ie, higher levels of perfectionism, persistence, and lower novelty seeking). It is a potent maintaining mechanism of eating disorder psychopathology, and it increases the risk of overuse injuries, bone fractures, and cardiac complications. It also appears to be a pr

A key system response of diametric space as a paradigm for understanding the phenomenology of anorexia nervosa.

There is increasing recognition of phenomenological approaches to understanding anorexia nervosa (AN), interrogating lived experiences and voices of those diagnosed with AN. This article builds on phenomenological accounts of AN, taking a step further for a spatial phenomenology, to examine how specific central features of AN experience are structured in diametric spatial terms. Building on growing research on the phenomenology of AN, it is remarkable how consistently the phenomenology of AN clusters around structural features of diametric space, as reactive, compensatory coping mechanisms of

Transdiagnostic vs. disorder-focused perspective in children and adolescents with eating disorders: Findings from a large multisite exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: The transdiagnostic model of eating disorders (ED) proposes common cognitive mechanisms in patients with ED psychopathology. Little is known about their role in the maintenance of ED in children and adolescents. This study aimed to determine whether the relationships between key factors (low self-esteem, weight and shape control, clinical perfectionism, interpersonal problems, distress and mood instability) and core maintaining mechanisms (binge-eating and restraint) would support a transdiagnostic theory in young patients. METHODS: A total of 419 patients (mean age 14.7 ± 2.14 ye

Mental Health Functioning in the Human Rights Field: Findings from an International Internet-Based Survey.

Human rights advocates play a critical role in promoting respect for human rights world-wide, and engage in a broad range of strategies, including documentation of rights violations, monitoring, press work and report-writing, advocacy, and litigation. However, little is known about the impact of human rights work on the mental health of human rights advocates. This study examined the mental health profile of human rights advocates and risk factors associated with their psychological functioning. 346 individuals currently or previously working in the field of human rights completed an internet-

How anorexic-like are the symptom and personality profiles of aesthetic athletes?

PURPOSE: We tested the hypothesis that aesthetic athletes (AA) have anorexic-like eating attitudes and behaviors, share personality characteristics such as perfectionism and obsessiveness, and are at high risk of eating disorders. METHODS: We compared symptomatology, personality variables typical of anorexia nervosa, and lifetime eating disorder prevalence across four groups of Israeli women: 31 anorexics, 111 AA (mostly dancers), 68 nonaesthetic athletes (NAA), and 248 controls. All participants completed self-report measures of symptomatology, harm avoidance, perfectionism, obsessiveness, s
