Effects of Periodontal Treatment in Patients with Periodontitis and Kidney Failure: A Pilot Study.

Periodontitis and chronic kidney disease are both chronic inflammatory diseases and share some common risk factors. This 3-month pilot study aimed to clarify whether non-surgical periodontal therapy is beneficial in clinical, biochemical, and microbiological conditions in patients with periodontitis and kidney failure. Kidney failure patients with moderate to severe periodontitis were recruited from two hospitals. Treatment group received non-surgical periodontal therapy, and control group received oral hygiene instruction only. Outcome assessments were conducted 1 and 3 months after treatment

The Effect of Periodontal Therapy on the Level of MMP-8 in Patients with Chronic Periodontitis.

OBJECTIVE: The complete removal of bacterial plaque and their endotoxins in deeper areas of periodontal pockets is often difficult to achieve with conventional methods such as periodontal pocket curettage. An alternative to these methods that recently gained popularity in periodontology is the diode laser, with its antibacterial effect, angiogenesis promotion as advantages. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 100 patients diagnosed with chronic periodontitis, with periodontal pockets up to 6 mm, and who were divided into two groups: patients treated with basic therapy and diode laser a

Association between periodontitis and periodontal indices in newly diagnosed bronchial asthma.

Background. Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease of the tooth-supporting structures. Current data suggest that periodontal disease may be a risk factor for asthma. The present study aimed to assess the prevalence of periodontitis and its relationship with the severity of asthma in asthmatic patients. Methods. This study was conducted on 70 newly diagnosed asthmatic patients as the case group and 70 healthy subjects as the control group, aged 20‒50. The asthma was diagnosed by a pulmonologist according to Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) guideline. All the participants underwent peri-odo

Periodontal therapy for primary or secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease in people with periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: There may be an association between periodontitis and cardiovascular disease (CVD); however, the evidence so far has been uncertain about whether periodontal therapy can help prevent CVD in people diagnosed with chronic periodontitis. This is the third update of a review originally published in 2014, and most recently updated in 2019. Although there is a new multidimensional staging and grading system for periodontitis, we have retained the label 'chronic periodontitis' in this version of the review since available studies are based on the previous classification system. Salivary and gingival CXCL8 correlation with periodontal status, periodontal pathogens, and smoking.

OBJECTIVES: Neutrophil granulocytes have been proposed to play a major role in the mediation of periodontitis-associated tissue destruction. Their recruitment and activation are regulated by the chemokine CXCL8. This study aimed to delineate the dependency of CXCL8 expression in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and saliva on periodontal status, bacterial infection, and smoking, in patients with periodontitis. METHODS: The study cohort comprised 279 subjects with untreated periodontitis. Probing pocket depth (PPD), gingival recession, bleeding on probing (BOP), plaque index, and bone loss were

Stem cell contributions to cementoblast differentiation in healthy periodontal ligament and periodontitis.

Loss of tissue attachment as a consequence of bacterial infection and inflammation represents the main therapeutic target for the treatment of periodontitis. Cementoblasts, the cells that produce the mineralized tissue, cementum, that is responsible for connecting the soft periodontal tissue to the tooth, are a key cell type for maintaining/restoring tissue attachment following disease. Here, we identify two distinct stem cell populations that contribute to cementoblast differentiation at different times. During postnatal development, cementoblasts are formed from perivascular-derived cells ex

Chronic Periodontitis Case Definitions and Confounders in Periodontal Research: A Systematic Assessment.

Case definitions and criteria of periodontal diseases are not yet consistent worldwide. This can affect the accuracy of any comparison made between two studies. This study determines which are the most common chronic periodontitis case definitions as well as confounding variables that have been reported worldwide in periodontal literature. A systematic assessment on periodontal disease classification and confounders was conducted using all publications in MEDLINE, EMBASE, SCOPUS, and Google Scholar between 1965 and October 2017. Screening of eligible studies and data extraction were conducted

Supportive periodontal therapy (SPT) for maintaining the dentition in adults treated for periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis is a bacterially-induced, chronic inflammatory disease that destroys the connective tissues and bone that support teeth. Active periodontal treatment aims to reduce the inflammatory response, primarily through eradication of bacterial deposits. Following completion of treatment and arrest of inflammation, supportive periodontal therapy (SPT) is employed to reduce the probability of re-infection and progression of the disease; to maintain teeth without pain, excessive mobility or persistent infection in the long term, and to prevent related oral diseases.According to t

Periodontal ligament-associated protein-1 gets involved in experimental periodontitis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Periodontal ligament-associated protein-1 (PLAP-1) is an important regulator of osteogenic differentiation of periodontal ligament cells and plays important role in the homeostasis of periodontal tissues. But the role of PLAP-1 in periodontitis is poorly understood. Expressions of PLAP-1 in experimental periodontitis are observed to elucidate whether PLAP-1 gets involved in the pathogenesis of periodontitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Wistar rats were randomly allocated to two groups (n = 6/group): Ligation group and Control group. PLAP-1 expression in experimental period

[How to analyze periodontal morphotypes in order to reduce the risk of periodontal recession].

INTRODUCTION: The periodontal morphotype is a leading feature to be born in mind during surgical, implant, prosthetic, restorative as well as orthodontic treatment. A fragile morphotype will rapidly trigger severe and worrying clinical repercussions for the patient. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In order to minimize the risks involved, sound knowledge of the different morphotypes and of the techniques for clinically evaluating them is a major requirement. These factors need to be regularly reassessed since morphotypes can vary throughout the course of treatment. RESULTS: Detecting and controlling m

The intricate anatomy of the periodontal ligament and its development: Lessons for periodontal regeneration.

The periodontal ligament (PDL) connects the tooth root and alveolar bone. It is an aligned fibrous network that is interposed between, and anchored to, both mineralized surfaces. Periodontal disease is common and reduces the ability of the PDL to act as a shock absorber, a barrier for pathogens and a sensor of mastication. Although disease progression can be stopped, current therapies do not primarily focus on tissue regeneration. Functional regeneration of PDL may be achieved using innovative techniques, such as tissue engineering. However, the complex fibrillar architecture of the PDL, essen

Compliance with supportive periodontal therapy among patients with aggressive and chronic periodontitis.

Compliance with supportive periodontal therapy (SPT) depends on many factors but is generally poor. We compared SPT compliance among patients with aggressive and chronic periodontitis. This single-center longitudinal observational study enrolled 101 patients with generalized aggressive periodontitis (GAP; n = 52) or generalized chronic periodontitis (GCP; n = 49) to compare SPT compliance. All participants were studied for 1 year before the close of data collection. Compliance was classified as complete (100% of programmed visits), erratic (≥50% of programmed visits), or noncompliant (<50% of
