Cortico-striatal cyclic AMP-phosphodiesterase-4 signalling and stereotypy in the deer mouse: attenuation after chronic fluoxetine treatment.

Motor stereotypies, described as repetitive, topographically invariant and seemingly purposeless behaviours, are common to several developmental and neuropsychiatric disorders. While drug induced stereotypy has been extensively studied, the neurobiology of spontaneous stereotypy is poorly understood. Deer mice present with naturalistic stereotypic behaviours that are selectively suppressed by fluoxetine. We studied basal cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) levels and phosphodiesterase (PDE) type 4 activity in prefrontal cortex and striatum of high, low and non-stereotypic deer mice, as well

Environmental enrichment: effects on stereotyped behavior and dendritic morphology.

We evaluated whether environmental enrichment-related effects on the development of stereotyped behavior in deer mice were associated with alterations in dendritic morphology. Deer mice were reared under enriched or standard housing conditions and then tested in automated photocell detectors and classified as stereotypic or nonstereotypic. Dendritic morphology was assessed in layer V pyramidal neurons of the motor cortex, medium spiny neurons of the dorsolateral striatum, and granule cells of the dentate gyrus using Golgi-Cox histochemistry. Enriched nonstereotypic mice exhibited significantly

Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) infesting wild birds (Aves) and white-footed mice in Lyme, CT.

Birds were captured and recaptured (20.8% of 5,297) with Japanese mist nets, and white-footed mice, Peromyscus leucopus (Rafinesque), were caught and recaught (69.1% of 355) with Sherman box traps during the late spring, summer, and early fall from July 1989 through October 1991 to study tick-host relationships in Lyme, CT. Ixodes scapularis Say, a vector of Lyme disease spirochetes, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto Johnson, Schmid, Hye, Steigerwalt & Brenner, infested 803 birds (15.2%) in 36 species and 148 (40.3%) of the mice. This tick dominated both birds (94.4% of 4,065 ticks) and mice

Role of peroxisomal fatty acid beta-oxidation in ethanol metabolism.

The contribution of peroxisomal fatty acid beta-oxidation to ethanol metabolism was examined in deermice hepatocytes. Addition of 1 mM oleate to hepatocytes isolated from fasted alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH)-positive deermice in the presence of 4-methylpyrazole or to hepatocytes from fasted or fed ADH-negative deermice produced only a slight and statistically not significant increase in ethanol oxidation. Lactate (10 mM), which is not a peroxisomal substrate, showed a greater effect on ethanol oxidation. There was also a lack of oleate effect on the oxidation of ethanol by hepatocytes of ADH-pos

Linking predator-prey interactions with exposure to a trophically transmitted parasite using PCR-based analyses.

Parasite transmission is determined by the rate of contact between a susceptible host and an infective stage and susceptibility to infection given an exposure event. Attempts to measure levels of variation in exposure in natural populations can be especially challenging. The level of exposure to a major class of parasites, trophically transmitted parasites, can be estimated by investigating the host's feeding behaviour. Since the parasites rely on the ingestion of infective intermediate hosts for transmission, the potential for exposure to infection is inherently linked to the definitive host'

Infrapopulation dynamics of a wild strain of Taenia crassiceps (WFU) (Cestoda: Taeniidae) in BALB/cJ mice.

Taenia crassiceps cysticerci form large infrapopulations that persist in the tissues of their rodent hosts. Early infrapopulation growth appears inhibited and is followed by rapid increases that appear not to be controlled by the host immune response. This investigation was undertaken to examine the infrapopulation growth dynamics of a normally developing strain (WFU) of T. crassiceps during a 60-day primary intraperitoneal (i.p.) infection. Three, 6, 9, 14, 28, and 60 days after i.p. inoculation of 5 cysticerci, mice were killed, and the numbers of larvae, developmental stage, and buds per la

Ectoparasites and other epifaunistic arthropods of sympatric cotton mice and golden mice: comparisons and implications for vector-borne zoonotic diseases.

Ectoparasite and epifaunistic arthropod biodiversity and infestation parameters were compared between 2 sympatric small rodent species, the cotton mouse (Peromyscus gossypinus (Le Conte)) and golden mouse (Ochrotomys nuttalli (Harlan)), in southern Georgia from 1992 to 2003. Because the cotton mouse is known to be a reservoir of more vector-borne zoonotic pathogens than the golden mouse, we hypothesized that it would be parasitized by more ectoparasites that are known to be vectors of these pathogens. Cotton mice (n = 202) were parasitized by 19 species of arthropods, whereas golden mice (n =

Effects of intrastriatal administration of selective dopaminergic ligands on spontaneous stereotypy in mice.

Abnormal repetitive behaviors are often associated with specific developmental, genetic, and neuropsychiatric disorders. Repetitive motor behaviors, often referred to as stereotypies, have been studied extensively as they can be readily induced by certain drugs (e.g., amphetamine). Recent work has shown, however, that such drug-induced models of stereotypy may not accurately reflect the neurobiological perturbations responsible for the spontaneous manifestation of these behaviors. The present study employed the deer mouse model of spontaneous and persistent stereotypy to evaluate the capacity

Enzootic Babesia microti in Maine.

Human babesiosis in the northeastern United States caused by Babesia microti (Apicomplexa: Piroplasmida) is mainly reported from coastal New England sites, where deer ticks (Ixodes dammini) are common. However, the piroplasm has been detected in microtine rodents elsewhere in association with I. angustus or other nidicolous ticks, suggesting that the agent is widely distributed but zoonotically significant only where a human-biting "bridge" vector is present. To determine whether this piroplasm may be enzootic in areas where I. dammini is absent, we surveyed small mammals collected from 2 site

Mice Against Ticks: an experimental community-guided effort to prevent tick-borne disease by altering the shared environment.

Mice Against Ticks is a community-guided ecological engineering project that aims to prevent tick-borne disease by using CRISPR-based genome editing to heritably immunize the white-footed mice ( Peromyscus leucopus) responsible for infecting many ticks in eastern North America. Introducing antibody-encoding resistance alleles into the local mouse population is anticipated to disrupt the disease transmission cycle for decades. Technology development is shaped by engagement with community members and visitors to the islands of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, including decisions at project incep

Acquisition of Borrelia burgdorferi Infection by Larval Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) Associated With Engorgement Measures.

Measuring rates of acquisition of the Lyme disease pathogen, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato Johnson, Schmid, Hyde, Steigerwalt & Brenner, by the larval stage of Ixodes scapularis Say is a useful tool for xenodiagnoses of B. burgdorferi in vertebrate hosts. In the nymphal and adult stages of I. scapularis, the duration of attachment to hosts has been shown to predict both body engorgement during blood feeding and the timing of infection with B. burgdorferi. However, these relationships have not been established for the larval stage of I. scapularis. We sought to establish the relationship betw

Impacts of an introduced forest pathogen on the risk of Lyme disease in California.

Global changes such as deforestation, climate change, and invasive species have the potential to greatly alter zoonotic disease systems through impacts on biodiversity. This study examined the impact of the invasive pathogen that causes sudden oak death (SOD) on the ecology of Lyme disease in California. The Lyme disease bacterium, Borrelia burgdorferi, is maintained in the far western United States by a suite of animal reservoirs including the dusky-footed woodrat (Neotoma fuscipes) and deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus), and is transmitted by the western black-legged tick (Ixodes pacificus)

Short days increase hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis responsiveness.

Individuals dramatically alter physiology and behavior to adapt to seasonal changes in their environment. To cope with winter stressors such as reduced food availability and low temperatures, central stress responses are presumably modulated at the level of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, but the details remain unspecified. We examined the effects of long or short photoperiods (day lengths) on corticosterone responses to restraint, HPA negative feedback sensitivity, glucocorticoid receptor gene expression in the hippocampus, the role of corticosterone in spatial learning, and co

First records of rodent-infesting Cuterebra bot flies parasitizing raccoons (Procyon lotor) in North America.

Larvae of Cuterebra spp. bot flies are specialized parasites of native species of either Rodentia (e.g., mice, rats, and tree squirrels) or Lagomorpha (e.g., rabbits and hares) in the Americas. However, they also infest other native and introduced wildlife, domestic animals, and humans, but which Cuterebra species parasitize these "atypical" hosts has seldom been determined, largely because the larvae are difficult to identify to species without first rearing them to adults. Here, we describe 2 Cuterebra spp. larvae removed from raccoons, Procyon lotor (Carnivora), in Washington (WA larva) and

Climate, deer, rodents, and acorns as determinants of variation in lyme-disease risk.

Risk of human exposure to vector-borne zoonotic pathogens is a function of the abundance and infection prevalence of vectors. We assessed the determinants of Lyme-disease risk (density and Borrelia burgdorferi-infection prevalence of nymphal Ixodes scapularis ticks) over 13 y on several field plots within eastern deciduous forests in the epicenter of US Lyme disease (Dutchess County, New York). We used a model comparison approach to simultaneously test the importance of ambient growing-season temperature, precipitation, two indices of deer (Odocoileus virginianus) abundance, and densities of w

Antibodies to whole-cell or recombinant antigens of Borrelia burgdorferi, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, and Babesia microti in white-footed mice.

Serum samples were obtained from white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) in tick-infested areas of Connecticut during the period 2001 through 2003 and analyzed for antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, and Babesia microti. Emphasis was placed on the evaluations of highly specific recombinant VlsE or protein (p) 44 antigens of B. burgdorferi and A. phagocytophilum, respectively, in a newly developed enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) as well as testing sera with whole-cell antigens by conventional ELISA or indirect fluorescent antibody staining methods. An ecological approach to preventing human infection: vaccinating wild mouse reservoirs intervenes in the Lyme disease cycle.

Many pathogens, such as the agents of West Nile encephalitis and plague, are maintained in nature by animal reservoirs and transmitted to humans by arthropod vectors. Efforts to reduce disease incidence usually rely on vector control or immunization of humans. Lyme disease, for which no human vaccine is currently available, is a commonly reported vector-borne disease in North America and Europe. In a recently developed, ecological approach to disease prevention, we intervened in the natural cycle of the Lyme disease agent (Borrelia burgdorferi) by immunizing wild white-footed mice (Peromyscus

Phenotypic variation in seasonal adjustments of testis size, body weight, and food intake in deer mice: role of pineal function and ambient temperature.

We investigated pineal function as well as reproductive and energetic characteristics in male deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) that differentially respond to short photoperiod with full, partial or no gonadal regression. In mice at both high (23 degrees C) and low temperature (1 degree C), these phenotypic differences in reproductive responses to short days were not reflected by differences in urinary excretion of 6-sulphatoxy-melatonin, the main metabolite of pineal melatonin. Neither duration nor amplitude or phase-angle of nocturnal peaks in 6-sulphatoxymelatonin significantly differed be

The coronaviral landscape across diverse mammalian species in the Northeastern United States.

Detection of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) across a broad mammalian host range has prompted concern that parallel evolution of SARS-CoV-2 in animals could reignite a surge in human infection. We conducted surveillance studies to describe the coronaviral landscape of wild and domestic animals (n = 889; 27 species) in the Northeastern United States. We focused on the white-footed mouse (WFM) and supplemented surveillance with laboratory infection studies to assess intra-and interspecies transmission of ancestral and Omicron variants. We detected a range of coronavi
