[Short questionnaire for detecting abnormal eating behavior (binge eating). Test results in 320 persons with normal weight and overweight/obesity].

BACKGROUND: Abnormal eating behavior (binge eating) is widespread, yet very often remains undetected in general medical practice because of the secretiveness of the affected person. A screening questionnaire (KFzE, 8 items, range 0-6) was developed to diagnose this specific eating disorder. Questions relating to or implying psychopathological aspects were excluded to avoid any stigmatization. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A partial score (TSc3) was calculated from the ratings of three core symptoms (1. uncontrollable urge to eat; 2. thinking of food; 3. feeling of satiety). In addition, the ratings o

Tuberculosis contact investigation with a new, specific blood test in a low-incidence population containing a high proportion of BCG-vaccinated persons.

BACKGROUND: BCG-vaccination can confound tuberculin skin test (TST) reactions in the diagnosis of latent tuberculosis infection. METHODS: We compared the TST with a Mycobacterium tuberculosis specific whole blood interferon-gamma assay (QuantiFERON-TB-Gold In Tube; QFT-G) during ongoing investigations among close contacts of sputum smear positive source cases in Hamburg, Germany. RESULTS: During a 6-month period, 309 contacts (mean age 28.5 +/- 10.5 years) from a total of 15 source cases underwent both TST and QFT-G testing. Of those, 157 (50.8%) had received BCG vaccination and 84 (27.2%) h

Testing a mobile peer support intervention for persons with serious mental illness (DigiPer) in community mental health services: a feasibility study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Persons with serious mental illness (SMI) often have coexisting medical conditions and experience a significantly reduced life expectancy compared with the general population. Peer support is considered an effective care approach for this population, and with rapid technological advancements, digital peer support, such as the DigiPer mobile application, can be a feasible self-management tool for persons with SMI. The study aims to assess the feasibility of DigiPer for persons with SMI in the Norwegian community mental health service settings. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This feasibili

Heterogeneity in health anxiety among medical students and HPV testing acceptability: the mediating role of eHealth literacy from a person-centered perspective.

BACKGROUND: Medical students, as future healthcare professionals, play a critical role in promoting preventive attitudes such as Human Papillomavirus (HPV) testing. However, their own preventive intentions may be influenced by psychological factors. This study aimed to identify latent profiles of health anxiety (HA) among medical students and examine how these profiles relate to HPV testing acceptability through the mediating role of eHealth literacy (eHL), informed by selected constructs from Protection Motivation Theory (PMT). METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 887 medica

A Person-Centered Hepatitis B Approach Using the COM-B Model to Understand Barriers and Facilitators of Hepatitis B Testing, Management and Treatment.

Over 250 million individuals live with chronic hepatitis B worldwide. More work is needed to address care gaps associated with chronic hepatitis B. Behavioural theories can assist in understanding gaps and aid in the development of effective interventions to reach elimination goals. Using the COM-B model, a sample of HBV-related direct messages from social media platforms from 2021 to 2023 was collected from individuals directly impacted by hepatitis B. Qualitative analysis was employed for social media messages using a guided codebook and the COM-B model. A sample of 168 unique data points we

Next-Day HIV Viral Load Test Result and Linkage to Care Among Persons Living With or at Risk of HIV: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: HIV viral load (VL) testing is essential for monitoring responses to antiretroviral therapy (ART) among people with HIV (PWH) and prior to the initiation of HIV preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP). In the US, the potential benefit of implementing HIV VL testing in these scenarios on linkage to care (LTC) has not been evaluated. OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether providing laboratory-based HIV VL test results changed LTC rates or time to linkage for ART or PrEP across 12 weeks. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This randomized clinical trial was conducted from August 18, 2021, to Febr

Health Impact and Cost-Effectiveness of Testing and Treatment of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Infection Among Asian and Hispanic Persons With Diagnosed Diabetes in the United States.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the cost-effectiveness of testing and treatment for Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection among Asian and Hispanic persons with diagnosed diabetes in the United States. METHODS: We estimated population size and Mtb infection prevalence for Asian and Hispanic persons aged ≥15 years with diagnosed, nongestational diabetes, by age and US-born status. We assumed a 1-time test for Mtb infection intervention, with positive-testing persons offered treatment. Using a deterministic, transmission-dynamic model of incident tuberculosis (TB) in the United States, we estimated

Laboratory Criteria for Exclusion and Readmission of Potentially Infectious Persons in Sensitive Settings in the Age of Culture-Independent Diagnostic Tests: Report of a Multidisciplinary Workgroup.

Culture-independent diagnostic tests (CIDTs) are increasingly used for clinical diagnosis of gastrointestinal diseases such as salmonellosis, Shiga toxin-producing E. coli disease, and shigellosis because of their speed, convenience, and generally high-performance characteristics. These tests are also used to screen potentially infectious asymptomatic persons during outbreak investigations in sensitive settings such as childcare, food service, and healthcare. However, only limited performance data are available for CIDTs used on specimens from asymptomatic persons. The Association of Public He

The impact of direct-to-consumer personal genomic testing on perceived risk of breast, prostate, colorectal, and lung cancer: findings from the PGen study.

BACKGROUND: Direct access to genomic information has the potential to transform cancer risk counseling. We measured the impact of direct-to-consumer genomic risk information on changes to perceived risk (ΔPR) of breast, prostate, colorectal and lung cancer among personal genomic testing (PGT) customers. We hypothesized that ΔPR would reflect directionality of risk estimates, attenuate with time, and be modified by participant characteristics. METHODS: Pathway Genomics and 23andMe customers were surveyed prior to receiving PGT results, and 2 weeks and 6 months post-results. For each cancer, PR

Can point-of-care urine LAM strip testing for tuberculosis add value to clinical decision making in hospitalised HIV-infected persons?

BACKGROUND: The urine lipoarabinomannan (LAM) strip-test (Determine®-TB) can rapidly rule-in TB in HIV-infected persons with advanced immunosuppression. However, given high rates of empiric treatment amongst hospitalised patients in high-burden settings (≈ 50%) it is unclear whether LAM can add any value to clinical decision making, or identify a subset of patients with unfavourable outcomes that would otherwise have been missed by empiric treatment. METHODS: 281 HIV-infected hospitalised patients with suspected TB received urine LAM strip testing, and were categorised as definite (culture-po
