Suture Characteristics after Exposure to Amniotic Fluid from an in vitro Model of Fetal Surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Suture tensile properties have only been tested in extrauterine environments. Amniotic fluid (AF) is a complex milieu of enzymes and inflammatory factors. This study tested the mechanical properties of sutures with a variety of inherent properties, after exposure to AF from patients with conditions prompting fetal intervention. METHODS: AF was obtained from 3 patients with twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS), and 3 patients with neural tube defects. Six types of 2-0 sutures were placed on 1.2 N of tension to mimic placement in vivo, and incubated in AF at 37°C (98.6°F). These

[Refixation in osteochondrosis dissecans with resorbable material using magnetic resonance tomography in follow-up monitoring].

A new method for refixation of osteochondritis dissecans and osteochondral flake fractures by using absorbable pins, fibrin adhesive and autologous spongiosa transplantation is described. The diagnostics can be improved by using MR (magnetic resonance imaging) to demonstrate the preoperative status of the defect as well as the postoperative reintegration of the flake, bone vitality and continuity of the joint cartilage. MR information is an excellent addition to the conventional radiograms for preoperative planning as well as for postoperative decision when to allow daily and sports activities

Laparoendoscopic single site surgery for severe pelvic adhesion release and total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingectomy.

Hysterectomy is a frequent gynecological surgical technique. The surgical approaches are laparotomic, virginally, and laparoscopic. The advantages of laparoscopic surgery are smaller surgical wounds, less pain, shorter hospital stay, and fewer complications. Laparoendoscopic single-site surgery (LESS), is a new type of laparoscopic surgery, which is performed through a 2-3 cm incision in the umbilicus, and the laparoscope and instruments are inserted to complete the operation. However, in LESS, the "chopstick" effect increases the difficulty of the surgery. This video aims to describe a case f

Assessment of the Resistance of Several Suture Techniques in Human Cadaver Achilles Tendons.

Many treatments are available for acute Achilles tendon ruptures, conservative and surgical, with none superior to another. For surgical treatment, one can use various techniques. Recent studies have shown that double stitches are superior to simple sutures. Therefore, in the present study, we sought to determine the suture technique that is the most resistant to rupture. We performed an experimental anatomic study with 27 fresh-frozen human cadaveric Achilles tendons obtained through the body donation program of the University of Barcelona, testing the maximum strength. We simulated a rupture
