Stepwise evaluation of syncope: a prospective population-based controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Evaluation of syncope remains often unstructured. The aim of the study was to assess the effectiveness of a standardized protocol designed to improve the diagnosis of syncope. METHODS: Consecutive patients with syncope presenting to the emergency departments of two primary and tertiary care hospitals over a period of 18 months underwent a two-phase evaluation including: 1) noninvasive assessment (phase I); and 2) specialized tests (phase II), if syncope remained unexplained after phase I. During phase II, the evaluation strategy was alternately left to physicians in charge of pati

Chromosomal control of pig populations in France: 2002-2006 survey.

The chromosomal control of pig populations has been widely developed in France over the last ten years. By December 31st, 2006, 13,765 individuals had been karyotyped in our laboratory, 62% of these since 2002. Ninety percent were young purebred boars controlled before service in artificial insemination centres, and 3% were hypoprolific boars. So far, 102 constitutional structural chromosomal rearrangements (67 since 2002) have been described. Fifty-six were reciprocal translocations and 8 peri- or paracentric inversions. For the first time since the beginning of the programme and after more t

Siblings and parents of children with autism: a controlled population-based study.

The siblings and parents of 35 children with infantile autism/autistic disorder were compared with those of children with deficits in attention, motor control and perception (DAMP) and of normal children for reported speech and language problems, reading and spelling problems, social deficits and psychiatric disorders. Children with autism tended more often to be the first and only child and there was some support for genetic stoppage in this group. Learning disorders were equally common among siblings and parents of the autism and normal groups, but less common compared with the DAMP group. A

Heterogeneity of breast cancer risk within the South Asian female population in England: a population-based case-control study of first-generation migrants.

South Asian women in England have a lower breast cancer risk than their English-native counterparts, but less is known about variations in risk between distinct South Asian ethnic subgroups. We used the data from a population-based case-control study of first-generation South Asian migrants to assess risks by ethnic subgroup. In all, 240 breast cancer cases, identified through cancer registries, were individually matched on age and general practitioner to two controls. Information on the region of origin, religious and linguistic background, and on breast cancer risk factors was obtained from

Population Health Approach to Blood Pressure Control Using Advanced Practice Provider-Managed Remote Patient Monitoring.

BACKGROUND: Guidelines suggest that home blood pressure (BP) readings are more reliable than in-clinic measurements; however, quality metrics for patients with hypertension (HTN) primarily rely on in-clinic readings. To improve BP documentation and management, we implemented an advanced practice provider (APP)-managed remote patient monitoring (RPM) program. METHODS: The electronic health records (EHR) of internal medicine patients with HTN and uncontrolled BP (≥140/90 mm Hg, per our institution's quality metric) were reviewed for more recent controlled (<140/90 mm Hg) home readings. If found

Multimorbidity and risk of infection in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: Population-based case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have elevated infection risk owing to disease- and treatment-related immune dysfunction. Whether multimorbidity adds risk remains uncertain. This study evaluated the association between multimorbidity and infection in RA. METHODS: A nationwide nested case-control study was conducted in Korea using the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service database mapped to the Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership Common Data Model. RA was identified by the International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision (M05-M06) with same-day disease-

Does tattoo exposure increase the risk of cutaneous melanoma? A population-based case-control study.

The incidence of cutaneous melanoma (CM) has risen sharply over the past 30 years, coinciding with the rapidly growing tattoo trend. In Sweden, 20% of the population is tattooed. Repeated reports of the presence of carcinogenic chemicals, such as polyaromatic hydrocarbons, aromatic amines and heavy metals in tattoo ink justifies the investigation of CM risk in relation to tattooing. We aimed to investigate the potential association between tattoo exposure and CM. We identified 2880 individuals who were diagnosed with CM at age 20-60 years, in the Swedish National Cancer Register. For each case

Measuring changes in Plasmodium falciparum census population size in response to sequential malaria control interventions.

Here we introduce a new endpoint "census population size" to evaluate the epidemiology and control of Plasmodium falciparum infections, where the parasite, rather than the infected human host, is the unit of measurement. To calculate census population size, we rely on a definition of parasite variation known as multiplicity of infection (MOI var ), based on the hyper-diversity of the var multigene family. We present a Bayesian approach to estimate MOI var from sequencing and counting the number of unique DBLα tags (or DBLα types) of var genes, and derive from it census population size by summa

Mediterranean Diet Adherence and Acne Vulgaris Severity in an Iranian Population: A Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Although the development of acne is influenced by a range of factors, emerging research suggests that dietary choices may also play a role in acne management. The Mediterranean diet is an antioxidant-rich, low-glycemic diet with preventive benefit against a range of chronic illnesses. We aimed to investigate the adherence to Mediterranean diet in acne patients and its association with disease severity. METHODS: In this case-control study, 105 patients with acne and 105 control individuals were enrolled and their clinical and demographic characteristics were assessed. A va

Peritoneal mesothelioma and asbestos exposure: a population-based case-control study in Italy, 2000-2021.

OBJECTIVES: Using a case-control design, we examined the association between occupational asbestos exposure and risk of peritoneal mesothelioma in the general population in Italy. METHODS: From the National Mesothelioma Registry, we selected cases (2000-2021) with life-time occupational history. Controls were 3045 from three case-control studies (region-sex-age-matched, performed in six regions), one in 2002-2004 (2116 population controls) and two in 2012-2016 (718 population and 211 hospital controls). For all subjects, exposure assignment was based on a quantitative job-exposure matrix (SYN

Fertility status and risk of pediatric cardiovascular diseases: a population-based nested case-control study.

STUDY QUESTION: Is parental fertility status and use of IVF associated with the risk of pediatric cardiovascular diseases among offspring aged 0-13 years, and is this association mediated by perinatal factors? SUMMARY ANSWER: Children conceived through IVF and those born to parents with subfertility (defined as one partner with an infertility diagnosis and not using ART for the study pregnancy) have an increased risk for congenital heart defects, partly explained by multiple gestations. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Evidence indicates that children born following IVF have an increased risk of prema

How population control of pests is modulated by density dependence: The perspective of genetic biocontrol.

Managing pest species relies critically on mechanisms that regulate population dynamics, particularly those factors that change with population size. These density-dependent factors can help or hinder control efforts and are especially relevant considering recent advances in genetic techniques that allow for precise manipulation of the timing and sex-specificity of a control. Despite this importance, density dependence is often poorly characterized owing to limited data and an incomplete understanding of developmental ecology. To address this issue, we construct and analyze a mathematical mode
