Unfulfilled Needs in the Detection, Diagnosis, Monitoring, Treatment, and Understanding of Glaucoma in Blacks Globally.

Glaucoma is an ophthalmic disorder that affects a significant number of Blacks globally. A leading cause of this condition is an age-related enlargement of the lens and increased intraocular pressure. Although Blacks are affected by glaucoma at a higher rate than their Caucasian counterparts, there remains a lack of emphasis placed on the detection, diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of glaucoma in this population. Education regarding glaucoma in the African and African American populations is essential to reducing rates of glaucoma-related visual impairment and improving treatment success.

Gynecological health of females with congenital heart disease.

Because of major advances in diagnostic and surgical methods, females with congenital heart disease (CHD) now survive into and beyond their reproductive years. Management of pregnancy in this patient population is well described, but gynecologic management such as menstruation, contraception and menopause have received scanty attention. Accordingly, the gynecologic health issues confronting these patients are described. Menstrual patterns in acyanotic females with CHD are similar to the general population, but cyanotic females have menstrual irregularities including amenorrhea, which implies a

Complications of weight loss surgery: implications for critical care nursing.

Weight-loss surgery (WLS) patients present a relatively new population for the health care system. Lack of clinical information about the WLS patient and the postoperative WLS patient can negatively affect quality of care and put the patient at unnecessary risk. Postoperatively, the bariatric patient is often admitted with complex care management requirements that differ from those of other surgical patients. Acute and critical care nurses must have a thorough understanding of the health implications of obesity, be familiar with common WLS procedures, and remain vigilant regarding the potentia

The impact of social context on self-management in women living with HIV.

HIV self-management is central to the health of people living with HIV and is comprised of the daily tasks individuals employ to manage their illness. Women living with HIV are confronted with social context vulnerabilities that impede their ability to conduct HIV self-management behaviors, including demanding social roles, poverty, homelessness, decreased social capital, and limited access to health care. We examined the relationship between these vulnerabilities and HIV self-management in a cross-sectional secondary analysis of 260 women living with HIV from two U.S. sites. All social contex

A model of health education and management for osteoporosis prevention.

Osteoporosis, a chronic disease with no therapeutic cure, affects a growing number of people as the aging population in China rapidly increases. Therefore, developing an evidence-based model of health education and management for osteoporosis prevention is required. In the present study, an osteoporosis club was established, which is a novel model of health education and management for osteoporosis prevention. A unified management of membership was used based on a digitized database. A total of 436 patients with osteoporosis were randomly assigned to the osteoporosis club group or the self-man

Characteristics of Orofacial Clefting in Hawai'i.

Orofacial clefts are birth defects that require a multi-disciplinary approach for repair and ongoing management as there are often concomitant chronic health issues. Orofacial clefts can occur as an isolated finding, in combination with other anomalies, or as part of a genetic syndrome. When occurring as part of a genetic syndrome, the complexity of management increases and has lifelong implications for these individuals, their families, and their health care providers. Understanding factors related to the occurrence of syndromic orofacial clefting is important for birth defect research and fo

Risk of importing zoonotic diseases through wildlife trade, United States.

Population mobility is a main factor in globalization of public health threats and risks, specifically distribution of antimicrobial drug-resistant organisms. Drug resistance is a major risk in healthcare settings and is emerging as a problem in community-acquired infections. Traditional health policy approaches have focused on diseases of global public health significance such as tuberculosis, yellow fever, and cholera; however, new diseases and resistant organisms challenge existing approaches. Clinical implications and health policy challenges associated with movement of persons across barr

Excessive sleepiness.

Sleepiness is a commonly experienced symptom affecting up to one-fifth of the population chronically. Sleepiness contributes to systemic health effects, and has been shown to contribute to mood disorders and cardiovascular risks. Sleepiness also presents a significant public health risk: it has been associated with major catastrophes, motor vehicle accidents, and medical errors by health care workers. This article reviews the implications of sleepiness on public health, the evaluation of sleepiness, disorders that result in sleepiness, and the management of these disorders.

Understanding potentially inappropriate medication: A focus group study with general practitioners.

INTRODUCTION: Polypharmacy and Potentially Inappropriate Medication (PIM) pose significant challenges for older adults, frequently leading to adverse health outcomes. While digital health tools offer promise solutions to improve medication management for this population, their integration into primary care settings remains slow. This study aims to explore the perspectives of Portuguese general practitioners (GPs) regarding polypharmacy, PIM, and the adoption of digital health-related tools for medication appropriateness in older adults. METHODS: Five qualitative focus group sessions were cond

A strategic framework for managing gestational diabetes in Mexico.

Gestational Diabetes (GDM) is a prevalent health challenge in Mexico, affecting 10-14% of pregnancies but detected in only about 5.1% of cases, highlighting a critical gap in the healthcare system. This underdiagnosis poses severe health risks to mothers and children and reflects broader systemic healthcare failures. The disparity in detection rates points to insufficient screening protocols and uneven access to care, particularly affecting rural areas. Additionally, a lack of integrated digital health solutions exacerbates these issues, leading to inconsistent management and follow-up of diag

Social inequalities in the self-management of type 1 diabetes: A serial multiple mediation analysis.

AIMS: Diabetes requires complex self-management. Due to this complexity, social disparities exist in the self-management of type 1 diabetes. Various pathways to describe associations between socio-economic factors and health outcomes have been suggested. We sought to elucidate the potential of health literacy and social support to reduce social disparities in diabetes self-management. METHODS: Questionnaire responses were linked to data from electronic medical records, yielding a study population of 1186 people with type 1 diabetes. Mediation analyses using adjusted linear regressions were us

Implementation of Home based management of malaria in children reduces the work load for peripheral health facilities in a rural district of Burkina Faso.

BACKGROUND: Home Management of Malaria (HMM) is one of the key strategies to reduce the burden of malaria for vulnerable population in endemic countries. It is based on the evidence that well-trained communities health workers can provide prompt and adequate care to patients close to their homes. The strategy has been shown to reduce malaria mortality and severe morbidity and has been adopted by the World Health Organization as a cornerstone of malaria control in Africa. However, the potential fall-out of this community-based strategy on the work burden at the peripheral health facilities leve
