Prediction of Vitamin D Deficiency in Older Adults: The Role of Machine Learning Models.

CONTEXT: Conventional prediction models for vitamin D deficiency have limited accuracy. BACKGROUND: Using cross-sectional data, we developed models based on machine learning (ML) and compared their performance with those based on a conventional approach. METHODS: Participants were 5106 community-resident adults (50-84 years; 58% male). In the randomly sampled training set (65%), we constructed 5 ML models: lasso regression, elastic net regression, random forest, gradient boosted decision tree, and dense neural network. The reference model was a logistic regression model. Outcomes were deseas

Machine Learning Models Predicting Cardiovascular and Renal Outcomes and Mortality in Patients with Hyperkalemia.

Hyperkalemia is associated with increased risks of mortality and adverse clinical outcomes. The treatment of hyperkalemia often leads to the discontinuation or restriction of beneficial but potassium-increasing therapy such as renin-angiotensin-aldosterone inhibitors (RAASi) and high-potassium diet including fruits and vegetables. To date, limited evidence is available for personalized risk evaluation in this heterogeneous and multifactorial pathophysiological condition. We developed risk prediction models using extreme gradient boosting (XGB), multiple logistic regression (LR), and deep neura

Weather integrated multiple machine learning models for prediction of dengue prevalence in India.

Dengue is a rapidly spreading viral disease transmitted to humans by Aedes mosquitoes. Due to global urbanization and climate change, the number of dengue cases are gradually increasing in recent decades. Hence, an early prediction of dengue continues to be a major concern for public health in countries with high prevalence of dengue. Creating a robust forecast model for the accurate prediction of dengue is a complex task and can be done through various data modelling approaches. In the present study, we have applied vector auto regression, generalized boosted models, support vector regression

MLb-LDLr: A Machine Learning Model for Predicting the Pathogenicity of LDLr Missense Variants.

Untreated familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) leads to atherosclerosis and early cardiovascular disease. Mutations in the low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLr) gene constitute the major cause of FH, and the high number of mutations already described in the LDLr makes necessary cascade screening or in vitro functional characterization to provide a definitive diagnosis. Implementation of high-predicting capacity software constitutes a valuable approach for assessing pathogenicity of LDLr variants to help in the early diagnosis and management of FH disease. This work provides a reliable machine

Machine learning models predict coagulopathy in spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage patients in ER.

AIMS: Coagulation abnormality is one of the primary concerns for patients with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage admitted to ER. Conventional laboratory indicators require hours for coagulopathy diagnosis, which brings difficulties for appropriate intervention within the optimal window. This study evaluates the possibility of building efficient coagulopathy prediction models using data mining and machine learning algorithms. METHODS: A retrospective cohort enrolled 1668 cases with acute spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage from three medical centers, excluding those under antithrombotic th

Predicting dengue importation into Europe, using machine learning and model-agnostic methods.

The geographical spread of dengue is a global public health concern. This is largely mediated by the importation of dengue from endemic to non-endemic areas via the increasing connectivity of the global air transport network. The dynamic nature and intrinsic heterogeneity of the air transport network make it challenging to predict dengue importation. Here, we explore the capabilities of state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms to predict dengue importation. We trained four machine learning classifiers algorithms, using a 6-year historical dengue importation data for 21 countries in Europe

Enhancing hydrogen sulfide control in urban sewer systems using machine learning models: Development of a new predictive simulation approach by using boosting algorithm.

Sewer networks are important urban infrastructure for transporting sewage to treatment plants, yet the generation of hydrogen sulfide within these systems poses significant challenges. This acidic toxic gas not only emits foul odors but also causes corrosion, necessitating effective control measures. Recent studies have introduced a modelling approach to predict and control the formation of hydrogen sulfide in sewer system. However, the conventional and mathematical models have demonstrated limitations in simulating non-linear data. Meanwhile, advanced (boosting) machine learnings are proving
