Among nonmotor symptoms observed in Parkinson's disease (PD) dysfunction in the visual system, including hallucinations, has a significant impact in their quality of life. To further explore the visual system in PD patients we designed two fMRI experiments comparing 18 healthy volunteers with 16 PD patients without visual complaints in two visual fMRI paradigms: the flickering checkerboard task and a facial perception paradigm. PD patients displayed a decreased activity in the primary visual cortex (Broadmann area 17) bilaterally as compared to healthy volunteers during flickering checkerboard

In order to test the hypothesis that in primary open angle glaucoma (POAG), an important cause of irreversible blindness, a spreading of neurodegeneration occurs through the brain, we performed multimodal MRI and subsequent whole-brain explorative voxelwise analyses in 13 advanced POAG patients and 12 age-matched normal controls (NC). Altered integrity (decreased fractional anisotropy or increased diffusivities) of white matter (WM) tracts was found not only along the visual pathway of POAG but also in nonvisual WM tracts (superior longitudinal fascicle, anterior thalamic radiation, corticospi

The authors examined eight patients with dementia of the Alzheimer's type (DAT), five with prominent visual symptoms early in the illness (VS) and three with no visual symptoms (NVS). Results of neuro-ophthalmologic examinations on VS patients showed relatively consistent abnormalities in figure copying, color vision tested by isochromatic plates, and stereopsis. Cerebral glucose metabolism determined by 18F-fluoro-2-deoxyglucose positron emission tomography (PET) was unchanged in primary visual cortex of VS and NVS patients compared with 12 normal volunteers of similar age and sex. Glucose me

The superior colliculus (SC) is the first station in a subcortical relay of retinal information to extrastriate visual cortex. Ascending SC projections pass through pulvinar and LGN on their way to cortex, but it is not clear how many synapses are required to complete these circuits or which cortical areas are involved. To examine this relay directly, we injected transynaptic rabies virus into several extrastriate visual areas. We observed disynaptically labeled cells in superficial, retino-recipient SC layers from injections in dorsal stream areas MT and V3, but not the earliest extrastriate

The development of visual function takes place over many months or years in primate infants. Visual sensitivity is very poor near birth and improves over different times courses for different visual functions. The neural mechanisms that underlie these processes are not well understood despite many decades of research. The puzzle arises because research into the factors that limit visual function in infants has found surprisingly mature neural organization and adult-like receptive field properties in very young infants. The high degree of visual plasticity that has been documented during the se

Here we identify a neural correlate of the ability to precisely direct visual attention to locations other than the center of gaze. Human subjects performed a task requiring shifts of visual attention (but not of gaze) from one location to the next within a dense array of targets and distracters while functional MRI was used to map corresponding displacements of neural activation within visual cortex. The cortical topography of the purely attention-driven activity precisely matched the topography of activity evoked by the cued targets when presented in isolation. Such retinotopic mapping of at

OBJECTIVES: To examine possible changes in cortical thickness and their relationship to retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-six patients with POAG and 40 matched healthy controls were enrolled in this study. All subjects underwent a comprehensive ophthalmologic examination and a high resolution structural magnetic resonance scan. Cortical thickness analysis was used to assess the changes between patients and controls. Correlations between the thickness of the visual cortex and RNFL thickness were also an

We have studied whether the presence of an artificial metal conductor in the visual cortex has an effect on the responsiveness pattern of the cells there. The physiological properties of single cells have been characterized in the mammalian primary visual cortex, following the acute and chronic implantation of silver wire electrodes. The Experimental group was Chronic and Acute operated and implanted adult cats. The Control group consisted of operated, but not implanted, adult cats and intact (Normal) adult cats. A sagittal incision was unilaterally made in the primary visual cortex (area 17)

Congenital blindness is associated with atypical morphology and functional connectivity within and from visual cortical regions; changes that are hypothesized to originate from a lifelong absence of visual input and could be regarded as a general (re) organization principle of sensory cortices. Challenging this is the fact that individuals with congenital anosmia (lifelong olfactory sensory loss) display little to no morphological changes in the primary olfactory cortex. To determine whether olfactory input from birth is essential to establish and maintain normal functional connectivity in olf

To study the functional recovery of a patient with cerebrovascular injury using combined functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). A 24-year-old woman with left hemianopsia underwent fMRI and DTI in a 1.5-tesla machine both in the acute phase and 1 month after an ischaemic stroke involving the right calcarine cortex. Acute-phase fMRI demonstrated that peripheral left visual field stimulation did not activate the right primary visual cortex, whereas stimulation 1 month later activated the visual cortex bilaterally. Analysis of acute-phase DTI data disclose

The Minimally Conscious State (MCS) is a condition in which a patient, following a brain injury, exhibits minimal yet definite behavioral evidence of awareness, representing a crucial transitional state between unconsciousness and the full emergence of consciousness. Assessing preserved cognitive function, particularly visual function, is crucial for diagnosis and rehabilitation, given that vision is the primary source of sensory input. While MCS patients consistently exhibit visual behaviors, such as sustained fixation or pursuit eye movements, previous neuroimaging studies have treated the v

Electrophysiological and neuroimaging studies have shown that attention to visual motion can increase the responsiveness of the motion-selective cortical area V5 and the posterior parietal cortex (PP). Increased or decreased activation in a cortical area is often attributed to attentional modulation of the cortical projections to that area. This leads to the notion that attention is associated with changes in connectivity. We have addressed attentional modulation of effective connectivity using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Three subjects were scanned under identical stimulus c

BACKGROUND: Alice in Wonderland syndrome (AIWS) is a rare cluster of CNS symptoms characterized by visual distortions (i.e. metamorphopsias), body image distortions, time distortions, and déjà experiences. Verbal auditory hallucinations (VAHs) are the most prevalent type of hallucination in adults with or without a history of psychiatric illness. Here, we report the case of a woman with AIWS, long-lasting VAHs, and various additional perceptual and mood symptoms.
METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were used to assess symptoms, and functional MRI (fMRI) was employed to localize cerebral activ

Visuospatial contrast sensitivity was determined by the Arden grating chart in 23 patients with cerebral infarctions involving the primary visual cortex or visual association cortex. Subjects were classified into three groups according to their lesions: I, 6 patients with unilateral medial occipital or occipitotemporal lesions; II, 6 patients with left lateral parieto-occipital lesions; and III, 11 patients with right lateral parieto-occipital lesions. Contrast sensitivity was markedly reduced in Group III, especially in patients having hemispatial agnosia. Group I patients with hemispatial ag

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder whose hallmarks are social deficits, language impairment, repetitive behaviors, and sensory alterations. It has been reported that patients with ASD show differential activity in cortical regions, for instance, increased neuronal activity in visual processing brain areas and atypical visual perception compared with healthy subjects. The causes of these alterations remain unclear, although many studies demonstrate that ASD has a strong genetic correlation. An example is Phelan-McDermid syndrome, caused by a deletion of the Shank3 g

Previous animal studies have demonstrated that 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) exposure causes serotonin axotomy that is greatest in occipital cortex (including primary visual cortex) where serotonergic axons innervate neurons and blood vessels. Human MDMA users have altered serotonergic function and reduced gray matter density in occipital cortex. The fMRI BOLD method is potentially sensitive to both the neuronal and vascular consequences of MDMA-induced serotonin toxicity. To test the hypothesis that MDMA users have altered visual system function, we used the fMRI BOLD technique to

The loss of cortical cholinergic fibers in Alzheimer's disease was investigated using choline acetyltransferase immunohistochemistry and acetylcholinesterase histochemistry. Within both the normal and Alzheimer's cerebral cortex, the two methods revealed an identical pattern of fiber staining. In the normal brain, cholinergic fiber density was highest in limbic and paralimbic cortical zones, intermediate in most sensory-motor and association zones, and lowest within the primary visual and visual association areas of the occipital lobe. In general, supragranular cortical layers contained a high

A fundamental scheme in the organization of the early visual cortex is the retinotopic representation of the contralateral visual hemifield on each hemisphere. We determined the cortical organization in a novel congenital visual pathway disorder, FHONDA-syndrome, where the axons from the temporal retina abnormally cross to the contralateral hemisphere. Using ultra-high field fMRI at 7 T, the population receptive field (pRF) properties of the primary visual cortex were modeled for two affected individuals and two controls. The cortical activation in FHONDA was confined to the hemisphere contral

The perception of a visual stimulus can be inhibited by occipital transcranial magnetic stimulation. This visual suppression effect has been attributed to disruption in the cortical gray matter of primary visual cortex or in the fiber tracts leading to V1 from the thalamus. However, others have suggested that the visual suppression effect is caused by disruption in secondary visual cortex. Here the authors used a figure-eight coil, which produces a focal magnetic field, and a Quadropulse stimulator to produce visual suppression contralateral to the stimulated hemisphere in five normal voluntee

The visual cortex has the capacity for experience-dependent change, or cortical plasticity, that is retained throughout life. Plasticity is invoked for encoding information during perceptual learning, by internally representing the regularities of the visual environment, which is useful for facilitating intermediate-level vision--contour integration and surface segmentation. The same mechanisms have adaptive value for functional recovery after CNS damage, such as that associated with stroke or neurodegenerative disease. A common feature to plasticity in primary visual cortex (V1) is an associa
