Do underrepresented minority medical students differ from non-minority students in problem-solving ability?

BACKGROUND: In medical education, examinations must assess a logical progression toward problem-solving skills. Differences in cognitive development between underrepresented minority students (URMs) and non-URMs may affect examination performance and subsequent attrition rates. PURPOSE: The authors investigated URM and non-URM performances by retrospectively analyzing success rates on exam items of differing cognitive demand. METHOD: Mean correct responses to exam items classified as Recall, Interpretation, or Problem-Solving questions were calculated. Both URM and non-URM groups were strati

"If there is a tension about something, I can solve it": A qualitative investigation of change processes in a trial of brief problem-solving interventions for common adolescent mental health problems in India.

OBJECTIVES: There is limited understanding of change processes and long-term effects of low-intensity psychosocial interventions. We investigated these aspects in two brief problem-solving intervention formats for adolescents with elevated mental health symptoms and associated distress/impairment. METHODS: This qualitative study was nested within a school-based randomized controlled trial in New Delhi, India, which compared two problem-solving intervention formats: a lay counsellor-led format supported by printed materials (intervention arm) and printed problem-solving materials alone ("bibli

Teaching students with LD to use diagrams to solve mathematical word problems.

This study examined the effectiveness of instruction focused on teaching students with learning disabilities (LD) to solve 1- and 2-step word problems of varying types. Three students with LD in Grade 8 participated in the study. During the treatment, students received instruction in diagram generation and a strategy that incorporates diagrams as a part of the procedure to solve word problems. The results indicated that all students improved in the number of diagrams they used and in their ability to generate diagrams. Their word problem solving performance increased. Moreover, the students ge

Problem solving as a core strategy in the prevention of schizophrenia and other mental disorders.

OBJECTIVE: To outline the rationale for implementing training in structured problem solving as a primary prevention strategy for major mental disorders. METHOD: The evidence that training people in a structured method of solving their personal problems is an effective strategy in the treatment of established cases of schizophrenic and major mood disorders, is selectively reviewed. RESULTS: Most of the relevant research focused on the prevention of major recurrent episodes of psychosis. There is some evidence to support the hypothesis that this strategy may assist many people to achieve a ful

ACTIVE problem solving: An action-oriented method for transforming Complex or Chaotic problems into verified reusable solutions.

In problem landscapes characterized by extreme uncertainty, traditional analytical problem-solving often fails because causal relationships only become visible through intervention. Additionally, valuable insights obtained during crisis response frequently remain unarticulated and risk being lost after stability is restored if they are not deliberately recorded. This paper introduces ACTIVE (Action-Centered Transformation Into Verified Explications), a novel meta-methodology designed to bridge the gap between immediate crisis management and long-term organizational learning. Cyclosporine: a review of drug monitoring problems and presentation of a simple, accurate liquid chromatographic procedure that solves these problems.

Many studies involving large numbers of patients prove the efficacy of cyclosporine to accomplish immunosuppression following hetertopic organ transplant. In long-term follow-up, cyclosporine produces a higher level of nephropathy than does conventional immunosuppression consisting of azathioprine and prednisone. The degree of nephropathy appears to be related to blood concentration and the effect can be minimized by maintaining therapeutic trough blood concentrations. Other significant side effects (central nervous system toxicity and hirsutism) can also be minimized by low blood concentratio

Can object exploration or explanation-generation facilitate innovative problem-solving in 5-7-year-olds?

Children struggle with independently innovating solutions to physical problems until around 8-years-old. This pre-registered study tested whether encouraging 5-7-year-olds (N = 83) to (1) explore task materials or (2) generate explanations would support innovative problem-solving in two tasks that involved accessing an out-of-reach item (the hook task and water-displacement task). Children were assigned to one of three conditions (Explore, Explain, Baseline). In the pre-test phase children were prompted to: (1) explore task materials (the functional and non-functional items presented alongside

The evolving role of MRI in abdominopelvic emergencies: from problem-solving to first-line imaging.

Acute abdominopelvic pain requires rapid imaging triage, traditionally dominated by computed tomography (CT) and ultrasound (US). However, advances in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), including accelerated acquisition, motion-robust sequences, and non-contrast protocols, have expanded its role beyond a problem-solving tool toward selective first-line imaging in specific clinical scenarios. This review provides a decision-based framework for MRI utilization in nontraumatic abdominopelvic emergencies, integrating current evidence on diagnostic performance, workflow considerations, and clinical

Clinical Problem Solving: A 67-year-old Man With Painful Leg Weakness and Difficulty Walking.

Rapidly progressive neurologic symptoms can be alarming to both the patient and the clinician, given the concern for serious pathologies. In this case, a 67-year-old patient presents with painful sensorimotor symptoms that progress rapidly within days of onset. Proper localization and consideration of medical co-morbidities is essential for accurate diagnosis. This case highlights the importance of a detailed neurologic examination to aid in the localization and differential diagnosis. The case will take readers through a stepwise approach to this complex neurologic presentation, work-up and m

KRAGEN: a knowledge graph-enhanced RAG framework for biomedical problem solving using large language models.

MOTIVATION: Answering and solving complex problems using a large language model (LLM) given a certain domain such as biomedicine is a challenging task that requires both factual consistency and logic, and LLMs often suffer from some major limitations, such as hallucinating false or irrelevant information, or being influenced by noisy data. These issues can compromise the trustworthiness, accuracy, and compliance of LLM-generated text and insights. RESULTS: Knowledge Retrieval Augmented Generation ENgine (KRAGEN) is a new tool that combines knowledge graphs, Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG

Large urinary bladder leiomyoma mimicking malignancy: Using diffusion-weighted imaging as a problem solving tool.

Benign tumors of the urinary bladder are rare and while leiomyomas are the most common type of benign mesenchymal tumors of the bladder, their incidence is low, and most of these tumors are small and asymptomatic. We present a rare case of a large symptomatic urinary bladder leiomyoma in a young female patient referred to a tertiary cancer hospital for management after a suspicion for malignant involvement was raised on initial evaluation, and subsequently, a magnetic resonance imaging was performed. Diffusion-weighted imaging was used as a problem-solving tool to differentiate the tumor from

Systems Training for Emotional Predictability and Problem Solving for borderline personality disorder: A systematic review.

Systems Training for Emotional Predictability and Problem Solving (STEPPS) is a group treatment program for patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD). The program was intended to be highly accessible, both for patients and therapists. During STEPPS, patients are taught emotion regulation and behavior management skills. This systematic review synthesizes the current empirical status of STEPPS, focusing on research designs, quality of studies, target groups, protocols, and outcome. We selected 20 studies, with three randomized controlled trials. Patients with BPD, subthreshold BPD, and

Clinical Problem Solving: A 56-Year-Old Woman With Right Facial Weakness, Numbness, and Diplopia.

We discuss a case of a middle-aged woman with a history of urothelial carcinoma, who presented with subacute progression of double vision, right facial numbness, and back pain. Her MRI brain and spine demonstrated multifocal enhancing lesions at the skull base and throughout the spine. Since her initial serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) studies were unrevealing, she underwent a biopsy of her skull base lesion, which was initially concerning for infection. However, her symptoms worsened despite appropriate antibiotic therapy, necessitating a spinal root biopsy that was consistent with leptome

Crystal structure of human chondroadherin: solving a difficult molecular-replacement problem using de novo models.

Chondroadherin (CHAD) is a cartilage matrix protein that mediates the adhesion of isolated chondrocytes. Its protein core is composed of 11 leucine-rich repeats (LRR) flanked by cysteine-rich domains. CHAD makes important interactions with collagen as well as with cell-surface heparin sulfate proteoglycans and α2β1 integrins. The integrin-binding site is located in a region of hitherto unknown structure at the C-terminal end of CHAD. Peptides based on the C-terminal human CHAD (hCHAD) sequence have shown therapeutic potential for treating osteoporosis. This article describes a still-unconventi

Problem solving, impulse control and planning in patients with early- and late-stage Huntington's disease.

Sub-domains of executive functions, including problems with planning, accuracy, impulsivity, and inhibition, are core features of Huntington's disease. It is known that the decline of cognitive function in Huntington's disease is related to the anatomical progression of pathology in the basal ganglia. However, it remains to be determined whether the severity of executive dysfunction depends on the stage of the disease. To examine the severity of sub-domains of executive dysfunction in early- and late-stage Huntington's disease, we studied performance in the Tower of London task of two groups o

Telephone Problem Solving for Service Members with Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: A Randomized, Clinical Trial.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is a common injury for service members in recent military conflicts. There is insufficient evidence of how best to treat the consequences of mTBI. In a randomized, clinical trial, we evaluated the efficacy of telephone-delivered problem-solving treatment (PST) on psychological and physical symptoms in 356 post-deployment active duty service members from Joint Base Lewis McChord, Washington, and Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Members with medically confirmed mTBI sustained during deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan within the previous 24 months received PST or edu

A practical proposal for solving the world's cigarette butt problem: Recycling in fired clay bricks.

The disposal and littering of cigarette butts (CBs) is a serious environmental problem. Trillions of cigarettes are produced every year worldwide, resulting in millions of tonnes of toxic waste being dumped into the environment in the form of cigarette butts. As CBs have poor biodegradability, it can take many years for them to break down. This paper reviews and presents some of the results of a study on the recycling of CBs into fired clay bricks. Bricks with 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10% CB content by weight were manufactured and tested, and then compared against control clay bricks with 0% CB con
