Cell membrane amino acid transport processes in the domestic fowl (Gallus domesticus).

Intestinal absorption of amino acids in the chicken occurs by way of processes which are concentrative, Na+-dependent and dependent upon metabolic energy in the form of ATP. Intestinal transport is carrier-mediated, subject to exchange transport (trans-membrane effects) and is inhibitable by sugars, reagents which inactivate sulfhydryl groups, potassium ion, and by deoxpyridoxine, an anti-vitamin B6 agent. It is stimulated by phlorizin, a potent inhibitor of sugar transport, and in Na+-leached tissue by modifiers of tissue cyclic AMP levels, e.g. theophylline, histamine, carbachol and secretin

Effects of in ovo feeding of l-arginine on hatchability, hatching time, early posthatch development, and carcass traits in domestic pigeons (Columba livia).

The objective of this research was to test the hypothesis that in ovo feeding of arginine (Arg) may improve hatchability and posthatch performance in domestic pigeons (). A completely randomized design ( = 3) with an Arg feeding treatment (Arg group, 1.14 mg Arg dissolved in 200 μL of 0.75% NaCl buffered saline as 1% concentration compared to total Arg in the egg), a buffered saline feeding treatment (SC group, 7.5 g NaCl dissolved in 1 L sterile distilled water as the concentration of poultry physiological saline), and a nonfeeding treatment (NC group) was used. Six squabs from each treatment

Outbreak Investigation of Marek's Disease in Chickens in Central and Western Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Marek's Disease (MD) is an economically devastating poultry disease that causes substantial livestock losses and drives up overall health management costs. There was no study conducted on isolation and molecular detection of Marek's disease virus (MDV) in extensively managed local breed chickens in some parts of Central and Western Ethiopia. METHODS: The present study was conducted from September 2021 to October 2022 with the aim of isolation and molecular detection of MDV suspected from outbreak cases in chickens in Central and Western Ethiopia. A total of 94 pooled samples were

Evaluation of the immuno-stimulatory effect of aqueous neem (Azadirachta indica) leaf extract against highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N8) in experimental chickens.

The recently detected clade 2.3.4.4 of the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N8 virus in poultry encouraged us to study the efficacy of the 6 most extensively used saleable H5 poultry vaccinations (bivalent [AI + ND], Re-5 H5N1, H5N1, H5N3, monovalent AI, monovalent ND) with or without aqueous 8% neem (Azadirachta indica) leaf extract as an immunostimulant. One hundred thirty birds were randomly divided into 7 groups. Groups 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 were divided into 2 subgroups (G1a, G2a, G3a, G4a, G5a, G6a) and (G1b, G2b, G3b, G4b, G5b, G6b) with 10 birds each. Subgroups (G1a, G2a, G3a,

Early feeding in the hatcher influences physiological indicators of nutritional status and hydration in broiler chicks during the immediate post-hatch period.

As early feeding (EF) is considered a promising strategy to improve broiler welfare, performance and health, new approaches to implement EF are becoming increasingly popular in the poultry industry. EF provided in the hatcher, commonly referred to as in-hatcher feeding, can offer a solution for the feed and water deprivation period experienced by chicks in traditional hatchery systems. However, in-hatcher feeding is still developing and scientific research regarding its impact on performance, health and welfare is limited. Therefore, the present study was designed to determine specific short-t

Detection of Newcastle disease virus and assessment of associated relative risk in backyard and commercial poultry in Kerala, India.

BACKGROUND: Newcastle disease (ND) is an economically important viral disease affecting the poultry industry. In Kerala, a state in South India, incidences of ND in commercial and backyard poultry have been reported. But a systematic statewide study on the prevalence of the disease has not been carried out. OBJECTIVES: A cross-sectional survey was performed to detect the presence of Newcastle disease virus (NDV) in suspect cases and among apparently healthy commercial flocks and backyard poultry, in the state and to identify risk factors for NDV infection. METHODS: Real-time reverse transcri

A blend of microencapsulated essential oils improves performance, economic index, meat fatty acid profile, carcass characteristics, and immune index of broilers.

This experiment investigated the impact of the blend of microencapsulated essential oils (BMEOs) on performance, economic index, meat fatty acid profile, carcass characteristics, and immune index in broilers. In a completely randomized design, a total of 640 (mixed-sex) one-day-old Ross 308 broilers were divided into 4 treatments with 10 replicates (16 chicks/replicate) for 42 days. Treatments were basal diet supplemented with BMEOs at levels of 0 (control), 300 (BMEOs-300), 600 (BMEOs-600), and 900 (BMEOs-900) mg/kg of diet. BMEOs contain equal ratios of EOs of eucalyptus (compounds: α-pinene

Phytogenic cocktails fed in different feeding regimes as alternatives to antibiotics for improving performance, intestinal microbial, and carcass characteristics of slow growth chickens.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The phytogenic cocktail (PC) is a unique combination of natural plant extracts consisting of coconut shell smoke, clove leaf extract, and mangosteen rind extract, predominantly containing phenol, eugenol, and α-mangostin. Chicken performance can be improved by its antibacterial properties. This study aimed to test PC as a replacement for antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs), assessing its impact on performance, intestinal microbes, and carcass traits in slow growth KUB chickens. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two hundred and forty KUB chicks were distributed randomly to five dietary

Severe acute respiratory syndrome vaccine development: experiences of vaccination against avian infectious bronchitis coronavirus.

Vaccines against infectious bronchitis of chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) have arguably been the most successful, and certainly the most widely used, of vaccines for diseases caused by coronaviruses, the others being against bovine, canine, feline and porcine coronaviruses. Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), together with the genetically related coronaviruses of turkey (Meleagris gallopovo) and ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus), is a group 3 coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) coronavirus being tentatively in group 4, the other known mammalian coronaviruses being
