Occurrence and phenotypic characteristics of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases among members of the family Enterobacteriaceae at the Tel-Aviv Medical Center (Israel) and evaluation of diagnostic tests.

We assessed the prevalence and phenotypic characteristics of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) producers among cefuroxime-resistant (CXM-R) (MIC > or = 32 micro g/ml) members of the family Enterobacteriaceae in our institution. The 438 CXM-R clinical isolates obtained from nonurine sources among inpatients were screened. ESBL production was confirmed by disk diffusion assay using cefpodoxime (CPD), cefotaxime (CTX), and ceftazidime (CTZ) with and without clavulanate (CLAV). A difference of > or =5 mm in the size of the zone of inhibition in the presence of CLAV for at least one of the ag

Surveillance of CTX-M group 1-producing Enterobacterales at the migratory Little Stint (Calidris minuta)-goat-aquatic interface in the Kenyan Rift Valley: a One Health approach.

The escalation of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) among critical-priority, extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing pathogens poses a global public health threat. Applying a One Health framework, this study characterized CTX-M Group 1 gene variants alongside co-carried β-lactamase gene families (bla OXA1 - like, bla SHV, and bla TEM) in Enterobacterales across the migratory shorebirds Little Stints (Calidris minuta)-livestock-aquatic interface in the Kenyan Rift Valley. Sampling occurred across two migratory cohorts-arrival from the Arctic and pre-departure from the lakes in a repeated cr

Six Essential Oils as Potential Antibacterial Agents Against Extensively Drug-Resistant (XDR) Gram-Negative Clinical Isolates.

Background/Objectives: Extensively drug-resistant Gram-negative pathogens severely limit antimicrobial treatment options. This study evaluated the in vitro antibacterial activity of six essential oils obtained from Romanian medicinal plants against extensively drug-resistant clinical isolates and interpreted the antibacterial findings in the context of their previously reported chemical composition. Methods: Forty-one non-duplicate clinical isolates were included: (i) Acinetobacter baumannii (n = 21); (ii) Klebsiella pneumoniae (n = 14); (iii) Pseudomonas aeruginosa (n = 4); and (iv) Providenc

Genomic Insights into Carbapenem-Resistant Organisms Producing New Delhi Metallo-β-Lactamase in Live Poultry Markets.

New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase (NDM) is an enzyme that can degrade a wide range of β-lactam antibiotics. The widespread dissemination of the blaNDM gene, which encodes NDM, in animal-derived settings poses a threat to public health security. Live poultry markets represent critical nodes in public health surveillance. However, there is currently limited reporting on the spread of the blaNDM gene within these markets under the One Health approach. This study investigated the prevalence of the blaNDM gene in live poultry markets and, by integrating newly sequenced genomes with publicly available d

Multi-drug resistant (MDR) Gram-negative pathogenic bacteria isolated from poultry in the Noakhali region of Bangladesh.

Rapidly increasing antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains in Bangladesh's food and farm animals stem from the excessive and inappropriate use of antibiotics. To assess the prevalence of multi-drug resistant (MDR) Gram-negative bacteria in poultry chicks, we sought to isolate and identify strains carrying antimicrobial resistance genes. Isolation and identification involved biochemical tests, 16S rRNA sequencing, and PCR screening of species-specific genes. MDR patterns were evaluated using CLSI guidelines with seventeen antibiotics across twelve classes. Targeted gene sequences were amplified

[Investigation of the presence of New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase-1 (NDM-1) by PCR in carbapenem-resistant gram-negative isolates].

Bacteria producing New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase-1 (NDM-1) exhibit high level resistance to beta-lactams including carbapenems. This broad-spectrum resistance limits treatment options for infections caused by NDM-1 producers. NDM-1 was first isolated from an Indian patient in Sweden; since then, NDM-1 producing isolates have been identified in many countries including Turkey. In this study, we investigated the presence of NDM-1 by PCR method in various gram-negative isolates recovered from clinical specimens in tertiary care hospitals in Samsun, Turkey. A total of 210 carbapenem-resistant g

Combined application of plant growth-promoting bacteria and iron oxide nanoparticles ameliorates the toxic effects of arsenic in Ajwain (Trachyspermum ammi L.).

Soil contamination with toxic heavy metals [such as arsenic (As)] is becoming a serious global problem because of the rapid development of the social economy. Although plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) and nanoparticles (NPs) are the major protectants to alleviate metal toxicity, the study of these chemicals in combination to ameliorate the toxic effects of As is limited. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the combined effects of different levels of Providencia vermicola (5 ppm and 10 ppm) and iron oxide nanoparticles (FeO-NPs) (50 mg/l-1 and 100 mg/l-1) on plant gr

Urinary tract infections in patients with spinal cord lesions: treatment and prevention.

Even though the mortality due to urinary tract complications has decreased dramatically during the last decades in individuals with spinal cord lesions (SCL), urinary tract infections (UTI) still cause significant morbidity in this population. Complicated UTI are caused by a much wider variety of organisms in individuals with SCL than in the general population and are often polymicrobial. Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas spp., Klebsiella spp., Proteus spp., Serratia spp., Providencia spp., enterococci, and staphylococci are the most frequently isolated bacteria in urine specimens taken from indiv

Mobile Colistin Resistance (mcr) Gene-Containing Organisms in Poultry Sector in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: Epidemiology, Characteristics, and One Health Control Strategies.

Mobile colistin resistance (mcr) genes (mcr-1 to mcr-10) are plasmid-encoded genes that threaten the clinical utility of colistin (COL), one of the highest-priority critically important antibiotics (HP-CIAs) used to treat infections caused by multidrug-resistant and extensively drug-resistant bacteria in humans and animals. For more than six decades, COL has been used largely unregulated in the poultry sector in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), and this has led to the development/spread of mcr gene-containing bacteria (MGCB). The prevalence rates of mcr-positive organisms from the pou

Gastrointestinal investigation of parasites and Enterobacteriaceae in loggerhead sea turtles from Italian coasts.

BACKGROUND: Caretta caretta is the most abundant sea turtle species in the Mediterranean, and studies on this species have vastly expanded during recent years, including those investigating gut bacterial and parasitic communities. Members of these communities have been reported with variable prevalence and pathogenicity, mainly depending on their host and environment (e.g. lifespan, distribution, habitat, diet, health status and stressors). Indeed, many species commonly inhabiting the sea turtle gastrointestinal tract exhibit an opportunistic behaviour. This study aimed to provide baseline dat
