Characterisation of beeswax in works of art by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry procedures.

Pyrolysis (Py) with in situ derivatisation with hexamethyldisilazane-gas chroma-break tography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry procedure based on microwave-assisted saponification were used to identify the organic components in small sized beeswax samples. With the latter procedure quantitative recoveries can be made and hydrocarbons, alcohols and omega-1-diols in the neutral fraction, and fatty acids and omega-1-hydroxy acids in the acidic fraction can be efficiently separated and detected. Both procedures were used to characterise a wax anatomic sculpture

Shaping antibiotic resistance gene fate in soil-plant systems: Dual roles of biochar physicochemical traits mediated by pyrolysis conditions.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), emerging contaminants spreading via horizontal gene transfer, threaten ecosystems and human health. Biochar (BC) is a widely used agricultural soil amendment, yet its effects on ARG dissemination remain controversial, likely dependent on pyrolysis conditions. This study applied wheat straw BC prepared under three distinct pyrolysis conditions, including open-flame combustion (BC-ZJ), 500°C hypoxic pyrolysis, and 500°C anaerobic pyrolysis, to a Brassica rapa L.-soil system for exploring ARG transfer impacts and mechanisms. BC application increased plant stem/

Aminated carbon nanofiber-mediated nanoconfined liquid phase nanoextraction coupled with pyrolysis-GC/MS for sensitive determination of polystyrene nanoplastics.

A novel integrated method combining nanoconfined liquid phase nanoextraction (NLPNE) based on aminated carbon nanofibers/ carbon fibers (NH2-CNFs/CFs) with pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py/GC-MS) was developed for the sensitive determination of polystyrene (PS) nanoplastics in aqueous samples. The nanoconfined space constructed by intertwined CNFs accelerates the mass transfer of PS nanoplastics via short-range diffusion. Meanwhile, amino groups on the material surfacenot only generate electrostatic attraction with negatively charged PS nanoplastics, driving PS nanoplastics i

Healthcare waste: from incineration to pyrolysis: a comparative life cycle assessment of two different healthcare plastic waste management processes.

BACKGROUND: Plastic waste from healthcare is an increasing environmental challenge, particularly in resource-intensive clinical pathways such as dialysis. Peritoneal dialysis (PD) generates large quantities of single-use plastic materials, making its waste stream a priority for sustainable intervention. Conventional disposal through incineration contributes substantially to greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and produces hazardous ash. Pyrolysis, a chemical recycling process that converts mixed plastic waste into usable outputs, has been proposed as a lower-carbon alternative. This study aimed to

CO2-assisted two-step pyrolysis fabrication of hierarchical porous Ni/ZrO2 catalyst for low-temperature dry reforming of methane.

A new strategy for preparing highly dispersed, richer oxygen vacancies Ni/ZrO2 catalysts derived from UiO-66-NH2 is reported via pyrolysis-calcination removal of the ligands under N2, CO2, and Air atmospheres followed by loading Ni with 5 wt.% via wet impregnation method. Subsequently, the low-temperature dry reforming of methane (DRM) reaction over the obtained Ni/ZrO2 catalysts was preliminarily investigated. The results indicated that the Ni/ZrO2C catalyst, obtained by two-step pyrolysis in CO2, contained smaller Ni particles with a size of only 5-7 nm and possessed a hierarchical porous st

N-doped Porous Carbon Derived from the Pyrolysis of a Polydopamine-coated Hypercross-linked Polymer for Enhanced CO2 Adsorption.

Porous carbon materials can simultaneously capture and convert carbon dioxide, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and using carbon dioxide as a feedstock for the production of valuable chemicals or fuel. In this work, a series of N-doped porous carbons (PDA@HCP(x:y)-T) was prepared; the CO2 adsorption capacity of the prepared PDA@HCP(x:y)-T was enhanced by coating polydopamine (PDA) on a hypercross-linked polymer (HCP) and then adjusting the mass ratio of PDA to HCP and the carbonization temperature. The results showed that the prepared PDA@HCP(1 : 1)-850 exhibited a high CO2 adsorptio

Large-scale production of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles by flame spray pyrolysis: In vitro biological evaluation for biomedical applications.

Despite the large number of synthesis methodologies described for superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs), the search for their large-scale production for their widespread use in biomedical applications remains a mayor challenge. Flame Spray Pyrolysis (FSP) could be the solution to solve this limitation, since it allows the fabrication of metal oxide nanoparticles with high production yield and low manufacture costs. However, to our knowledge, to date such fabrication method has not been upgraded for biomedical purposes. Herein, SPIONs have been fabricated by FSP and their surface

Continuous Pyrolysis Microreactors: Hot Sources with Little Cooling? New Insights Utilizing Cation Velocity Map Imaging and Threshold Photoelectron Spectroscopy.

Resistively heated silicon carbide microreactors are widely applied as continuous sources to selectively prepare elusive and reactive intermediates with astrochemical, catalytic, or combustion relevance to measure their photoelectron spectrum. These reactors also provide deep mechanistic insights into uni- and bimolecular chemistry. However, the sampling conditions and effects have not been fully characterized. We use cation velocity map imaging to measure the velocity distribution of the molecular beam signal and to quantify the scattered, rethermalized background sample. Although translation

Removal of copper ions from aqueous solution using low temperature biochar derived from the pyrolysis of municipal solid waste.

Sustainable methods to produce filter materials are needed to remove a variety of pollutants found in water including organic compounds, heavy metals, and other harmful inorganic and biological contaminants. This study focuses on the removal of Cu(II) from copper aqueous solutions using non-activated char derived from the pyrolysis of mixed municipal discarded materials (MMDM) using a new heat pipe-based pyrolysis reactor. Adsorption experiments were conducted by adding the char to copper solutions of varying concentration (50-250 mg/L) at a constant temperature of 30 °C. The effect of pH on c

Surfactant Pyrolysis-Guided in Situ Fabrication of Primary Amine-Rich Ordered Mesoporous Phenolic Resin Displaying Efficient Heavy Metal Removal.

A unique strategy for the direct preparation of primary amine-functionalized ordered mesoporous phenolic resin (NH2-MPRN) was presented. The essence of our approach avoided the side reactions in the m-nitrophenol-formaldehyde resol synthesis using m-nitrophenol and formaldehyde as the monomers. Importantly, these resols can efficiently assemble with triblock copolymer F127 to form a mesostructured composite. The final prolysis treatment removed the F127 template to produce ordered mesopores, and meanwhile, the accompanying reductive gas in situ transferred the nitro groups to primary amines. N

Exploring the Reaction Mechanisms of Fast Pyrolysis of Xylan Model Compounds via Tandem Mass Spectrometry and Quantum Chemical Calculations.

A commercial fast pyrolysis probe coupled with a high-resolution tandem mass spectrometer was employed to identify the initial reactions and products of fast pyrolysis of xylobiose and xylotriose, model compounds of xylans. Fragmentation of the reducing end by loss of an ethenediol molecule via ring-opening and retro-aldol condensation was found to be the dominant pyrolysis pathway for xylobiose, and the structure of the product-β-d-xylopyranosylglyceraldehyde-was identified by comparing collision-activated dissociation of the ionized product and an ionized authentic compound. This intermediat

Endogenous release of metals with dissolved organic carbon from biochar: Effects of pyrolysis temperature, particle size, and solution chemistry.

Metals are released from biochar (BC) in either the free or dissolved organic carbon (DOC)-combined form. The complexation of metals with DOC influences their toxicity and bioavailability in the environment. The endogenous release of metal species with heterogeneous DOC from BC is very complex; this process has been neglected and remains unaddressed in the literature to date. In this study, the yield and chemical properties of labile DOC from BC were characterized, and the release of endogenous metal/metalloid elements (K, Mg, Mn, Fe, Al, Cu, and Si) and their species from BC with various pyro

Thermogravimetric analysis, kinetic study, and pyrolysis-GC/MS analysis of 1,1'-azobis-1,2,3-triazole and 4,4'-azobis-1,2,4-triazole.

BACKGROUND: In general, the greater the number of directly linked nitrogen atoms in a molecule, the better its energetic performance, while the stability will be accordingly lower. But 1,1'-azobis-1,2,3-triazole (1) and 4,4'-azobis-1,2,4-triazole (2) show remarkable properties, such as high enthalpies of formation, high melting points, and relatively high stabilities. In order to rationalize this unexpected behavior of the two compounds, it is necessary to study their thermal decompositions and pyrolyses. Although a great deal of research has been focused on the synthesis and characterization

Preparation of carbon nano-microcoils by Ni3S2-catalyzed pyrolysis of acetylene and its vapor-liquid-solid-solid growth mechanism.

Carbon microcoils are generally prepared by catalytic chemical vapor deposition of acetylene, using Ni as the catalyst and thiophene as the promoter. In this work, Ni3S2 was chosen as the catalyst on purpose to avoid the introducing of noxious and unpleasant thiophene during the reaction process. The products obtained in the temperature range of 1013-1033 K were pure, regular and had perfect morphology. Using transmission electron microscope, Raman spectrometer and X-ray diffractometer, the microstructure of the as-prepared carbon microcoils were characterized, furthmore, energy dispersive spe

Distribution of the carcinogenic tryptophan pyrolysis product Trp-P-1 in control, 9-hydroxyellipticine and beta-naphthoflavone pretreated mice.

Autoradiograms obtained 1-4 h after i.v. injection of the 14C-labelled carcinogenic tryptophan pyrolysis product Trp-P-1 to albino and pigmented mice showed a pronounced uptake of radioactivity in the lymphatic system (thymus, lymph nodes, bone marrow and spleen), in the endocrine system (hypophysis, thyroid, adrenal medulla) and in the liver, kidney medulla and brain. High radioactivity was present in the excretory pathways, predominantly in the bile/intestinal contents. At longer post-injection times (24 h to 6 days) most of the labelled substance had left the tissues, except for the liver w

Pyrolysis mass spectra, sulfhydryl and tryptophan content of the embryonic nuclei from adult human normal and nuclear-cataractous lenses.

Cataractous state-related alterations were studied by Curie-point pyrolysis low voltage mass spectrometry performed on the embryonic nuclei from adult normal and nuclear-cataractous human lenses. It was shown that the relative intensities of ion signals assigned to sulfur dioxide and tentatively, to other sulfur oxidation products correlate with the increase in lens nuclear color. Since these ion signals may represent pyrolysis fragments from methionine sulfoxide, methionine sulfone, cysteic acid and disulfide compounds present in the parent material, it is concluded that progressive oxidation

Optimization of pyrolysis parameters for enhanced biochar production from agricultural biomass: A study on energy efficiency and carbon sequestration potential.

Biomass pyrolysis presents an attractive opportunity for sustainable energy generation while also sequestering carbon, but efforts to systematically optimize it in consideration of feedstock variability, process parameters, and energy efficiency are still in their infancy. This research assesses the pyrolysis characteristics of five types of agricultural wastes, including rice husk, corn stalk, palm kernel shell, coconut shell, and wheat straw, at a fixed-bed reactor, with temperature (300 to 700 °C), heating rate (5-20 °C/min), and residence time (30 to 120 min). Metal oxides-based catalytic pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomasses for bio-oil development: a comparative assessment on process optimization and characterization.

This study investigated the conventional fixed-bed catalytic pyrolysis using metal oxides (CaO, Fe₂O₃, and TiO₂) to enhance bio-oil yield from three lignocellulosic biomasses: safflower press cake (SPC), coconut press cake (CPC), and coconut shell (CS). The primary characterization, using ultimate, proximate, and compositional analyses, as well as TGA-DTG-DSC, was carried out in the experiment. SPC biomass had a high hemicellulose content (50.8 ± 0.11%), which is suited for bio-oil applications. An initial non-catalytic pyrolysis experiment was conducted at 550 °C with a heating rate of 25 °C/
