Metastatic melanoma is an aggressive and treatment-resistant skin cancer with a low 5-year survival rate of 27%. Historically considered radioresistant, melanoma's response to radiation therapy (RT) has evolved, especially when integrated with systemic therapies like immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). RT is now recognized for its utility in local control, palliative care, and brain metastasis management. Emerging evidence shows RT's synergy with ICIs through mechanisms like the abscopal effect. This article explores RT's evolving role in metastatic melanoma treatment, focusing on integration

Genes are differentially expressed in cells in response to changes in the internal or external environment. The response is generally an adaptive mechanism to the environmental challenge to restore cell functions to homeostasis. There are numerous studies reporting changes in gene expression in cells exposed to radiofrequency radiation (RFR), the type of energy emitted by wireless communication devices. The major genes affected are those involved in: repair of damaged proteins, response to stress, oxidative changes, apoptosis, DNA damage detection and repair, and changes in neural functions. G

The health care sector contributes 4.4% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Many countries are aiming for a carbon net-zero health care system by 2040-2050. Climate-smart practices in radiation oncology units include a progressive shift towards stereotactic body radiotherapy, the use of telemedicine, and strategies to streamline treatment workflows. Integration of geographic appropriateness in health care policies can also significantly mitigate the carbon footprint of clinical practice. Our rapid review assesses the environmental impact of climate-smart practices in radiation oncology departm

PURPOSE: Cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs) are hamartomatous vascular lesions. A part of CCMs is estimated to occur after cranial irradiation. However, there have been no reports documenting clinical picture of such CCMs. This study aimed to explore it.
METHODS: A total of 51 patients with multiple CCMs who visited our hospital, between 2006 and 2024, were explored. Among them, five were considered to have radiation-induced CCMs, four developing after cranial irradiation and one after endovascular therapy.
RESULTS: The male-to-female ratio of radiation-induced CCM cases was 3:2. The me

Radiation-induced cystitis is a common complication following radiotherapy for pelvic malignancies such as prostate, bladder, and cervical cancer. Acute toxicity occurs in up to 50% of patients, while late toxicity is observed in 5-11%. Triggering factors include radiation dose, treatment planning, and patient-related factors such as radiosensitivity, comorbidities, and smoking. The condition leads to inflammatory and fibrotic changes in the bladder mucosa, resulting in symptoms such as dysuria and haematuria. This review provides a comprehensive overview of available therapeutic options for t

Optic tissue toxicity remains a major limitation of radiation therapy for ocular, brain, skull base, and head and neck tumors. Among the most frequent complications, radiation retinopathy (RR) occurs in 6% of patients treated for extraocular tumors and in more than 40% of those with ocular tumors. After an initial asymptomatic stage characterized by vascular remodeling and chronic retinal ischemia, RR may progress to irreversible vision loss and significantly impaired quality of life. Advances in non-invasive, high-resolution imaging have improved our understanding of the molecular and cellula

Radiation therapy is a critical component in managing many malignancies by improving local control and survival. The benefits of radiation may come at the expense of unintended radiation injury to the surrounding normal tissues, with the heart being one of the most affected organs in thoracic radiation treatments. As cancer survivors live longer, radiation-induced cardiotoxicity (RICT) is now increasingly recognized. In this review, we highlight the spectrum and pathophysiology of RICT. We summarize contemporary recommendations for risk stratification, screening, prevention, and management of

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced morphea is a fibro-inflammatory remodelling process of the subcutaneous connective tissue caused by ionising radiation, most commonly in the context of breast cancer treatment. The underlying pathomechanisms and putative risk factors are unknown. Therefore, misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment pose a significant problem in the care of those patients.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to provide an overview as well as guidance for the diagnosis and treatment of radiation-induced morphea based on current case reports and review articles.
RESULTS AND CONCLUS

BACKGROUND: Radiation optic neuropathy may be one side effect of ionizing radiation exposure to the eye found in a minority of patients. It is generally devastating for visual function and has been the subject of a small but growing literature with respect to its pathophysiology, treatment, and expected outcomes.
SUMMARY: Clinical features include optic disc edema, peripapillary hemorrhages, cotton wool spots, and hard exudates. Visual acuity is generally significantly reduced. Treatment has been attempted with outcomes that have not been assessed by randomized trials. Observation may be indi

Multidisciplinary evaluation of early-stage glottic cancer facilitates optimal treatment with either surgery or radiation therapy. Standard of care radiation treatment of early-stage glottic cancer continues to be three-dimensional opposed lateral fields to include the whole larynx. Modern radiation treatment techniques are allowing studies to examine the efficacy and toxicity of altered doses and treatment volumes. Advanced techniques, such as stereotactic body radiation therapy or single-vocal cord irradiation, are not yet considered standard of care for early-stage glottic cancer and should

PURPOSE: During fixed orthodontic treatment, oral hygiene is difficult to ensure and can easily lead to an imbalance in the oral micro-ecological balance. In this study, based on the adhesive properties of polydopamine (PDA) and the good antimicrobial and remineralization properties of carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) and xylitol (Xy), new nanocomposites with both antimicrobial and remineralization capabilities were prepared to coat on orthodontic brackets.
METHODS: Composite carbon dots (CDs) were synthesized using carboxymethyl chitosan and xylitol, we characterized them and the antimicrobial p

Radiation recall pneumonitis (RRP) is a type of radiation induced lung injury that develops in a previously irradiated lung field and is triggered by administration of chemotherapeutic or immunomodulating agents. To our knowledge there is only one report of Osimertinib induced RRP. The predominant symptoms include dyspnea and cough which usually resolve after stopping the inciting agent and with glucocorticoids. We describe a 52-year-old lady with lung cancer who developed Osimertinib induced RRP. She had significant dyspnoea and cough despite stopping Osimertinib and treatment with corticoste

Radiation treatment is a well-established component of breast cancer treatment, in both breast conservation and also for many patients who have had mastectomy as well as those with metastatic disease. The basis for this was established in multiple large meta-analyses, and multiple modern studies have further defined the role of radiation. The radiation must be delivered to the area at risk, which can include the partial breast, whole breast, chest wall, and/or regional lymph nodes. There are a number of acceptable radiation treatment techniques and dose-fractionation schedules that can be indi

Radiotherapy (RT) is a treatment modality that uses high-energy rays or radioactive agents to generate ionizing radiation against rapidly dividing cells. The main objective of using radiation in cancer therapy is to impair or halt the division of the tumor cells. Over the past few decades, advancements in technology, the introduction of newer methods of RT, and a better understanding of the pathophysiology of cancers have enabled physicians to deliver doses of radiation that match the exact dimensions of the tumor for greater efficacy, with minimal exposure of the surrounding tissues. However,

Thymomas and thymic carcinomas are rare epithelial cell tumours arising from the thymus. Definitive surgical resection continues to be the primary approach for the management of thymomas and thymic carcinomas. However, complete resection is not always achievable due to the complexity of the mediastinal anatomy and in rare cases local recurrences may occur which are often incurable. Therefore, the use of Post-Operative Radiotherapy (PORT) may be considered with the intent of improving local control while being judicious of toxicity in the setting of prolonged clinical trajectories and proximity
