Arabic orthography is complex, partly as a consequence of variations in orthographic connectivity. In this article, we present the case study of CHS, an Arabic individual with deep dyslexia associated with letter-by-letter reading. In the experimental study, we specifically explored the influence of orthographic connectivity on CHS's word recognition and reading abilities. Our results show that CHS's performance was better preserved for words and non-words made up of connected letters than made up of non-connected letters. CHS demonstrated impairment of visuoperceptual mechanisms, which affect

This study explored the developmental trajectories and predictors of word reading and reading comprehension among young at-risk readers. In fall of first grade, 185 students identified as at-risk for reading difficulties were assessed on measures of domain-specific skills (phonological awareness, letter knowledge, and vocabulary), domain-general skills (working memory, nonverbal reasoning, and processing speed), and word reading and reading comprehension. Word reading and reading comprehension were assessed again in spring of grades 1-4. Individual growth curve modeling showed that the childre

This study investigated the relationship between reading comprehension (RC), trait anxiety, and preoccupation with reading disability (RD) in 88 school children in Grades 3 through 5 and in their mothers. Children's trait anxiety had a significant direct negative relationship with RC and also mediated the association between preoccupation with RD and RC. Mothers' preoccupation with their children's RDs had a direct negative association with their children's RC. This association was also mediated through children's trait anxiety. No association was found between mothers' trait anxiety and child

This study analyzes the effect of initial status and growth in Spanish pseudoword reading in kindergarten and first grade on reading comprehension in Spanish at the end of first grade. One hundred and sixty-eight Spanish-speaking English learners who were learning to read in Spanish and English in the United States participated in the study. Results of hierarchical linear modeling indicate that students grew, on average, by 95 letter-sounds in Spanish from the middle of kindergarten to the end of first grade. Structural equation modeling indicated that 53% of the variance in Spanish reading co

Background: Developmental dyslexia (DD) is the most common form of specific learning disorders (SLDs). From a neurocognitive point of view, dyslexic reading is associated with atypical neurofunctional patterns in the left hemisphere, mainly in the posterior areas linked to lexical access and phonological processing. Nowadays, rehabilitation treatments do not aim to fix the disorder but rather improve adaptive skills. On the other hand, the transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has recently gained popularity in this field. In fact, a few studies have documented enhanced accuracy and sp

PURPOSE: Emerging literature suggests caregiver self-efficacy is an important factor related to caregivers' shared reading practices with their children. Reduced shared reading has been documented among families of caregiver(s) with language-based learning disabilities (LBLD). Yet, it remains unclear whether caregivers' history of language and reading difficulties is associated with caregiver self-efficacy. The purpose of this study was to examine whether self-efficacy in language- and reading-related caregiver activities related to caregiver history of language and reading difficulties and sh

PURPOSE: The primary aim of this study was to compare decoding and literacy-related skills of children with suspected childhood apraxia of speech (sCAS) to children with reading disorders (RD) and no history of speech sound disorder (RD-no SSD) to determine if the groups differ in decoding and the endophenotypes that contribute to RD. We also explored the association between language impairment (LI) and decoding and literacy-related skills within the participant group with sCAS.
METHOD: Participants were school-age children and adolescents, 8-14 years of age, with a diagnosis of sCAS (n = 13)

PURPOSE: Several studies have investigated cognitive-communication disorders affecting oral expression skills following TBI but very few have dealt with reading comprehension abilities. The current study aims to measure reading comprehension and speed of reading in adults with uncomplicated and complicated mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) and to determine which demographic and TBI-related variables are predictive of their performance.
METHOD: The performances of three groups of participants were compared on the Chapman-Cook Speed of Reading Test (CCSRT). The CCSRT was administered in an acut

BACKGROUND: Possible beneficial effects of yellow-tinted spectacle lenses on binocular vision, accommodation, oculomotor scanning, reading speed and visual symptoms were assessed in children with reading difficulties.
METHODS: A longitudinal prospective study was performed in 82 non-dyslexic children with reading difficulties in grades 3-6 (aged 9-11 years) from 11 elementary schools in Madrid (Spain). The children were randomly assigned to two groups: a treatment (n = 46) and a without-treatment group (n = 36). Children in the treatment group wore yellow spectacle lenses with best correction

In previous studies, of which several were underpowered, the relation between cardiovascular outcome and blood pressure (BP) variability was inconsistent. We followed health outcomes in 8938 subjects (mean age: 53.0 years; 46.8% women) randomly recruited from 11 populations. At baseline, we assessed BP variability from the SD and average real variability in 24-hour ambulatory BP recordings. We computed standardized hazard ratios (HRs) while stratifying by cohort and adjusting for 24-hour BP and other risk factors. Over 11.3 years (median), 1242 deaths (487 cardiovascular) occurred, and 1049, 5

We present the clinical and electrographic data of 17 patients with reading-induced seizures documented with ictal video-EEG studies during provocation with language related tasks. The median age at onset was 15 years (range 11-22 years) and the male:female ratio was 2.4. Fourteen patients had no spontaneous seizures of any type while the remaining three had infrequent generalized tonic-clonic seizures during nocturnal sleep. Two distinct electroclinical ictal patterns were confirmed on video-EEG analysis. (i) Fifteen patients had reading-induced jerks which invariably involved the region of t

The choice between short-read and long-read sequencing represents a critical trade-off in forensic mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) analysis. In this study, Illumina short-read sequencing (SRS) and QitanTech Nanopore long-read sequencing (LRS) platforms were systematically compared using data from 177 individuals across 39 maternal pedigrees. The results demonstrated that LRS, which utilized a single-amplicon enrichment strategy, delivered superior coverage uniformity (median 100%), effectively reducing the coverage variability typically associated with SRS multiplex PCR. Moreover, LRS improved the d

BACKGROUND: Reading comprehension in individuals with intellectual disabilities is shaped by linguistic complexity and cognitive processing demands. Easy-to-Read (E2R) adaptations aim to reduce these demands, yet empirical evidence on their effects in narrative texts remains limited.
METHODS: This study examines how E2R adaptations of Spanish short stories affect reading comprehension. Thirty-seven adults with intellectual disabilities completed comprehension assessments for 11 texts in their original and adapted versions under a partially crossed, unbalanced within-subject design. Directiona

Articles in this issue examine (1) the primary sources of variability in reading and language achievement among Spanish-speaking English learners (ELs) in the United States, (2) the extent to which poor performance at the end of grade 2 is identifiable in developmental trajectories beginning in kindergarten, (3) the relations among core reading constructs of phonological awareness and decoding in both English and Spanish and the factors that affect their relationship, (4) the performance of different approaches to identification and the factors that influence how well they work, as well as (5)

University students who report a history of reading difficulties have been demonstrated to have poorer word reading and reading comprehension skills than their peers; yet, without a diagnosed learning disability, these students do not have access to the same support services, potentially placing them at academic risk. This study provides a comprehensive investigation of first-year academic achievement for students with a history of reading difficulties (n = 244) compared to students with no such history (n = 603). We also examine reported use of metacognitive reading and study strategies and t

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggests that amblyopia results in fixation instability and atypical saccades. Reading is a vision-reliant ability that requires sequential eye movements, including forward and regressive saccades. This study investigated reading and associated eye movements in school-age amblyopic children.
METHODS: Amblyopic children with strabismus and/or anisometropia (n = 29) were compared to nonamblyopic children treated for strabismus (n = 23) and normal control children (n = 21). While fitted with the ReadAlyzer, an eye movement recording system, children silently read a gr

Currently, learning disabilities (LD) are diagnosed on the basis of the discrepancy between students' IQ and reading achievement scores. Students diagnosed with LD often receive remedial instruction in resource rooms. The available evidence suggests that the educational policy based on this discrepancy model has not yielded satisfactory results. This has led researchers to try other paradigms, such as the component model and response to intervention, for dealing with children with reading disabilities. The component model of reading (CMR) described in the present article identifies the reading

Several studies have reported a strong association between semantic system impairment and LARC error production. However, our patient with a left temporal lobe contusion, including the fusiform gyrus, showed LARC errors even in two-Kanji compound words, the meanings of which the patient understood. Also, the poor results of lexical decision and picture naming suggested problems in orthographic and phonological retrieval. From these results, we concluded that at least some LARC errors are independent of semantic impairment, and other explanations are needed for this type of error.

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is frequently intermittent and may therefore remain undetected on a short resting electrocardiogram (ECG). At the same time, a sinus-rhythm ECG contains information on the underlying atrial substrate.
OBJECTIVE: To review conventional and artificial intelligence (AI)-based ECG markers of an atrial risk phenotype and their potential role in targeted AF screening.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Narrative appraisal of current consensus and guideline documents and of clinical, electrophysiological, and population-based studies on P‑wave parameters, AI-ECG, and risk-a

UNLABELLED: Dyslexia is often addressed through specialised intervention, yet growing scholarship in literacy and educational psychology also underscores the importance of contextualised and meaningful literacy experiences for students with reading difficulties. In this article, I argue the relevance of Paulo Freire's concept of decodification for reading instruction for students with dyslexia and broader reading difficulties. Drawing on the literature on dyslexia, background knowledge, culturally relevant text selection and experiences of emergent bilingual learners, I argue that decodified t
