Associations Among Natural Disaster Exposure, Childhood Adversity, and Cognitive Functioning in Older Americans in the Health and Retirement Study.

Although adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are linked to poorer later-life cognitive function, little is known about how natural disasters, which may be perceived as stressful or traumatic, influence this relationship. Using the Health and Retirement Study, we investigated whether disaster exposure moderates the ACE-cognition association in 12,951 adults aged 50+ years [Mage = 64.6, SD = 10.1]. Cognitive performance score (range: 0-27) was calculated from word recall, serial 7's, and backward counting. At least one ACE was experienced by 35.6% and a natural disaster by 15.4% of the sample.

"I value it, but someone should do it": fitness staff's perspectives on task-oriented resistance exercise in retirement communities.

BACKGROUND: Many older adults relocate to retirement communities to age in place, particularly when facing health declines or disability. Task-oriented resistance exercise, which integrates functional daily activities into exercise, has shown benefits in reducing late-life disability. However, little is known about how such programs can be embedded within the existing fitness infrastructure of retirement communities to support residents who are at risk of disability. This study explored fitness staff's perspectives on the compatibility and complexity of implementing a task-oriented exercise pr

Arthritis-diabetes comorbidity and functional recovery in older adults: a longitudinal cohort study using the Health and Retirement Study.

Background Arthritis and diabetes commonly coexist in older adults, but recovery after disability has received less attention than disability onset. We examined whether coexisting diabetes was associated with disability onset, functional recovery, state-specific transitions, and mortality among older adults with arthritis. Methods This longitudinal cohort study used biennial Health and Retirement Study data from 2000 to 2022. Consecutive interview pairs contributed person-wave observations for adults aged 65 years or older. Time-updated arthritis and diabetes status defined four exposure group

Association between headache and hearing impairment in middle-aged and older adults in China health and retirement longitudinal study.

Global population aging presents remarkable socioeconomic and public health challenges worldwide. Headache rank as the second leading global cause of disability and have been implicated in the pathogenesis of hearing impairment (HI). Nevertheless, the precise relationship between these conditions remains poorly researched, particularly in aging populations. This study utilized data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) among adults aged 45 years and older. Participants with pre-existing HI or missing data were excluded, resulting in a final sample of 3,872 individual

Associations of perceived neighborhood factors and Alzheimer's disease polygenic score with cognition: Evidence from the Health and Retirement Study.

BACKGROUND: We examined the relationships between neighborhood characteristics, cumulative genetic risk for Alzheimer's disease (polygenic scores for Alzheimer's disease), and cognitive function using data from the Health and Retirement Study (2008-2020, age > 50). METHODS: Baseline perceived neighborhood characteristics were combined into a subjective neighborhood disadvantage index. Cognitive function was assessed at baseline and measured biennially over a 10-year follow-up period. Analyses were stratified by genetic ancestry. Cox proportional hazard models analyzed associations between nei

No long-term benefits from resistance training on brain grey matter volumes in active older adults at retirement age.

BACKGROUND: Resistance training and other forms of physical exercise are commonly suggested to promote brain health, yet the relationship between resistance training and brain structure in aging is poorly understood. We examined the short- and long-term influence of one year of supervised resistance training at two different loadings on brain structure in aging. METHODS: In the LISA (LIve active Successful Ageing) study, well-functioning older adults at retirement age (mean age: 66 ± 2 years) were randomized to one year of heavy resistance training (HRT), moderate intensity training (MIT), or

Occupational licensing in later life: changing older workers' work and retirement pathways before and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Occupational licensing is the fastest-growing labor market institution, and a significant portion of newly licensed individuals are older workers. This study introduces occupational licensing as an influential factor of later-life work and retirement by investigating the sociodemographic and economic characteristics of older workers newly attaining licenses and the choices of work adjustments after attaining licenses, as well as measuring the changes in these trends before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: I use the sample of workers aged

Association between Chinese visceral adiposity index and sarcopenia: a China health and retirement longitudinal study (CHARLS)-based longitudinal analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Sarcopenia, characterized by a progressive decline in muscle mass and function, is increasingly associated with metabolic dysregulation. However, the relationship between the Chinese visceral adiposity index (CVAI), a reliable indicator for assessing visceral fat, and sarcopenia remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the association between CVAI and the incidence of sarcopenia among middle-aged and older Chinese adults. METHOD: Baseline and follow-up data were collected from the 2011 and 2015 waves, respectively, of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. Sar

A machine learning approach to identify stride characteristics predictive of musculoskeletal injury, enforced rest and retirement in Thoroughbred racehorses.

Decreasing speed and stride length over successive races have been shown to be associated with musculoskeletal injury (MSI) in racehorses, demonstrating the potential for early detection of MSI through longitudinal monitoring of changes in stride characteristics. A machine learning (ML) approach for early detection of MSI, enforced rest, and retirement events using this same horse-level, race-level, and stride characteristic data across all race sectionals was investigated. A CatBoost model using features from the two races prior to an event had the highest classification performance (sensitiv

Considerations for Pediatric Retirement from Athletics Following Repetitive Concussive Traumatic Brain Injury: Incorporating the Right to an Open Future.

Guidance regarding the decision to remove an adolescent from athletic competition immediately following an acute concussive injury and the safe return of play in the short term is widely accepted and supported by clinical evidence, local institutional policies, and state and federal laws. There is considerably less guidance regarding the decision to permanently retire an adolescent athlete for medical reasons due to concussive injuries. In this article, we discuss the clinical and non-clinical considerations that should guide clinicians in discussions regarding the adolescent athlete's permane

Allostatic load measurement and cognitive function among midlife and older Black and White adults in the health and retirement study.

Allostatic load (AL), a composite of biological measures, is frequently used to capture the physiological burden of chronic stress and is associated with cognitive decline. Black Americans are more likely to develop Alzheimer's disease and related dementias than White Americans, but racial disparities in the AL-cognition relationship have been under explored. Additionally, AL is not consistently measured in literature. The aim of this research was to examine racial variation of the AL-cognition relationship using various AL scoring methods. Data were from the 2006-2016 waves of the Health and
