Local delivery of liposome-encapsulated superoxide dismutase and catalase suppress periodontal inflammation in beagles.

BACKGROUND, AIMS: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of oxygen free radical scavengers on periodontal inflammation and healing process. METHOD: Experimental periodontitis was induced by elastic ligatures around premolars (P2, P3, P4) and 1st molars (M1) in the upper and lower jaws of 15 beagle dogs. 9 months after the beginning of the experiment, the ligatures were removed. After 3 weeks of stabilization period, all teeth were supragingivally scaled. The animals were divided into 3 groups of 5 dogs. The 1st group received a liposome-encapsulated superoxide dismutase (SOD)

The efficacy of minocycline microspheres in the treatment of chronic periodontitis: statistical vs clinical significance.

This article addresses the benefits of using minocycline microspheres as an adjunct to conventional periodontal therapy. The author reviewed data from a large controlled clinical trial. The investigation indicated that scaling and root planing, plus minocycline microspheres, attained statistically significant improvements, with regard to several clinical parameters, when compared with scaling and root planing alone. Because it is the clinical meaningfulness of data that determines whether a therapy should be implemented, these data are interpreted with respect to their clinical relevance.

The use of locally delivered chlorhexidine in the treatment of periodontitis. Clinical results.

Since the advent of a nondegradable controlled local delivery of antibiotics in 1979, several second generation systems have been developed. Second generation systems have attempted to improve on the early system. Chlorhexidine has been used effectively for over 30 years as an antiseptic. In the early 1970s, chlorhexidine gluconate was incorporated at 0.2% into mouthrinses in Europe and in 1986 it was incorporated at 0.12% in a mouthrinse in the United States. Since these mouthrinses were effective in reducing the supragingival flora, had a high safety margin, and had no reported bacterial res

Refractory chronic periodontitis: effect of oral tetracycline hydrochloride and root planning.

Refractory chronic periodontitis of 16 patients was treated by root planing and adjunctive tetracycline hydrochloride therapy. The antibiotic was taken orally one hour before root planing and continued for six days at a dosage of 250 mg six hourly. The clinical data for each patient were recorded as the number of probing depths in each of the 1-3 mm, 4-6 mm and 7-10 mm ranges. The Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) procedure for repeated measurements was used to analyse the data. The results demonstrated that the number of sites with probing depths of 4-6 mm and 7-10 mm associated with

The effects of spiramycin and/or scaling on advanced periodontitis in humans.

It has long been questioned whether antibiotics, used as a supplement to traditional therapy, provide any lasting benefit in the treatment of chronic periodontitis. This study was designed to evaluate Spiramycin as an adjunct to scaling and root planing in the treatment of advanced chronic periodontitis. In total, 193 patients with advanced periodontitis were recruited in seven centres using selection criteria previously described. After undergoing thorough scaling and root planing, all patients randomly received either Spiramycin, 1,500,000 international units, twice per day (IU, bid) for 14

Should Antibiotics Be Prescribed to Treat Chronic Periodontitis?

Although scaling and root planing is a cost-effective approach for initial treatment of chronic periodontitis, it fails to eliminate subgingival pathogens and halt progressive attachment loss in some patients. Adjunctive use of systemic antibiotics immediately after completion of scaling and root planing can enhance the degree of clinical attachment gain and probing depth reduction provided by nonsurgical periodontal treatment. This article discusses the rationale for prescribing adjunctive antibiotics, reviews the evidence for their effectiveness, and outlines practical issues that should be

Treatment of an Infrabony Defect of a Maxillary Canine Tooth Using Enamel Matrix Derivatives with Allogeneic Bone Augmentation in a Dog.

A 5-year-old Miniature Dachshund was presented having an infrabony pocket on the palatal aspect of the right maxillary canine tooth. The bony defect had worsened despite previous closed root planing and administration of a perioceutic agent. A second surgery using an allogeneic cancellous bone augmentation with an enamel matrix derivative was performed in the infrabony defect following open root planing. Eight months after the periodontal surgery, the osseous defect showed healing by improved periodontal probing measurements and increased radiopacity using dental radiography and computed tomog

[Subgingival application of chlorhexidine in the treatment of periodontitis].

The clinician is frequently faced with poor treatment outcome of scaling and root planing predominantly in deep pockets and furcations. In an attempt to optimize clinical effects at these weakly responding sites chemo-mechanical treatment strategies have been developed and studied, among those using chlorhexidine as an antimicrobial agent. In this overview the clinical effects of subgingival chlorhexidine irrigation, gel, chip and varnish administration as an adjunct to scaling and root planing in the treatment of periodontitis are discussed. There is little to no evidence indicating treatment

Periodontal treatment by Arestin and its effects on glycemic control in type 1 diabetes patients.

Studies indicate that a dual pathway between diabetes mellitus and periodontal disease exists. Elimination of periodontal infection by using systemic antibiotics in conjunction with scaling and root planing (SRP) improved metabolic control in diabetic patients, as defined by reduction in glycated haemoglobin or reduction in insulin requirements (Grossi and Genco, 1998). The aim of this randomised pilot clinical trial was to determine if type 1 diabetes patients with periodontitis will experience a reduction in HbA1c levels when treated with locally delivered minocycline microspheres (Arestin)

Regenerative effect of azithromycin on periodontitis with different levels of gingival inflammation: three case reports.

BACKGROUND: Azithromycin is an antibiotic belonging to the macrolides. Previous case reports showed that azithromycin has a regenerative effect on periodontal tissue in addition to improving periodontal gingival inflammation. Recently, we experienced three periodontitis cases, all of which showed severe bone loss. However, their gingival inflammatory signs differed greatly. The present case reports evaluated the regenerative effects of azithromycin on periodontitis sites with different clinical signs of gingival inflammation. METHODS: In Case 1, generalized chronic periodontitis with severe g

Comparison of Root Surface Roughness Produced By Hand Instruments and Ultrasonic Scalers: An Invitro Study.

BACKGROUND: Instrumentation on tooth surface for debridement of hard and soft debris forms the basis of periodontal therapy. This involves periodic removal of accumulated material using different methods of instrumentation. An ideal instrument should eliminate all the deposits from the root surfaces with no or minimal alteration of the natural morphology. AIM: To compare the root surface roughness after root planing performed with gracey curette and by ultrasonic scalers (Satelec P-5 Booster) set at different power modes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The root surface roughness and its surface micr

Nonsurgical periodontal treatment during pregnancy and rates of preterm birth.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis during pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of preterm birth (<37 weeks of gestation) or low birthweight (<2500 g) offspring. Beyond periodontal disease, the risk of preterm birth varies both by previous history of preterm birth and in association with social determinants prevalent among vulnerable and marginalized populations. This study hypothesized that the timing of periodontal treatment during pregnancy and/or social vulnerability measures modified the response to dental scaling and root planing for the treatment of periodontitis and prevention of prete

Systematic review on the effect of rinsing with povidone-iodine during nonsurgical periodontal therapy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The existing literature is inconsistent regarding whether there is any additional effect of povidone-iodine (PVP-iodine) as an adjunctive to scaling and root planing, and, if there is an effect, what its size is. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the additional effect of PVP-iodine as an adjunct to scaling and root planing compared with water, saline or no rinse in the treatment of chronic periodontitis.
