Merging Mandibular Virtual Datasets in Partially Edentulous Patients with a High Level of Scattering on CBCT Scans: A Technical Report.

Digital implant planning-utilizing the convergence of digital surface scanners, CBCT scans, and advanced planning software-has transformed dental implantology. The merging of these datasets through triangulation of landmarks provides a detailed digital model of the dental arches, facilitating precise implant positioning in edentulous areas. A critical step in this digital workflow is the accurate merging of DICOM files with .STL/.PLY/.OBJ files, which underpins the design and fabrication of surgical templates for accurate implant placement. Errors in this phase can lead to implant mispositioni

Interaction of anaesthetic drugs and UV-B irradiation in the anterior segment of the rat eye.

PURPOSE: To determine the impact of anaesthesia on acute transient cataractogenesis and ultraviolet radiation (UVR)-induced cataractogenesis. METHODS: Sprague-Dawley rats were anaesthetized with pentobarbital, which caused almost full eyelid closure, or xylazine/ketamine, which caused eyelid retraction and proptosis. The eyelids of one eye were kept open with either a suture or adhesive tape, or both. The other eye was kept closed with either a suture or tape. Cataract was graded clinically and quantified in vitro as intensity of forward light scattering. In two UVR experiments, anaesthetized

Accelerated beam-blocker-based scatter correction for clinical CBCT via sparsely-sampled angular interpolation.

Photon scattering-induced artifacts degrade the quantitative and qualitative reliability of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images, restricting their clinical diagnostic utility. Conventional beam-blocker-based scatter correction methods, despite enabling direct and cost-effective scatter measurement, necessitate additional scatter projections, resulting in elevated radiation dose and prolonged scan duration-two critical bottlenecks for clinical translation. To overcome these limitations, this study proposes a low-dose, efficient beam-blocker scatter correction approach integrating indire

Assessing the Efficacy of RADPAD Protection Drape in Reducing Radiation Exposure to Operators in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

One of the leading environmental hazards, ionizing radiation, is linked to several detrimental health consequences in the body. RADPAD (Worldwide Innovations & Technologies, Inc., Kansas City, Kansas) is a sterile, lead-free, lightweight, disposable radiation protection shield. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the effectiveness of RADPAD protection drapes in the cardiac catheterization lab and how they can aid interventional cardiologists in becoming subjected to less scatter radiation. PubMed, Embase, and Google Scholar were searched for studies discussing the e

Surface-plasmon-coupled emission of quantum dots.

We studied surface plasmon-coupled emission (SPCE) of semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). These QDs are water-soluble ZnS-capped CdSe nanoparticles stabilized using lysine cross-linked mercaptoundecanoic acid. The QDs were spin-coated from 0.75% PVA solution on a glass slide covered with 50 nm of silver and a 5-nm protective SiO(2) layer. Excited QDs induced surface plasmons in a thin silver layer. Surface plasmons emitted a hollow cone of radiation into an attached hemispherical glass prism at a narrow angle of 48.5 degrees. This directional radiation (SPCE) preserves the spectral properties of

[Study of Phantom Length Correction for kV-Cone Beam CT Dose Evaluation Method Using Farmer-type Ionization Chamber and Cylindrical Phantom].

In this study, we investigated the necessary phantom length for dose evaluation of kV-CBCT mounted on the linear accelerator using a Farmer-type ionization chamber and cylindrical PMMA phantom, which many radiotherapy facilities own. Furthermore, a phantom length correction factor was proposed to compensate for the lack of scattered radiation contributed from the craniocaudal direction due to the inadequate phantom length. The air-absorbed dose at the center of a cylindrical PMMA phantom measured by a Farmer-type ionization chamber indicated that the contribution of scattered radiation saturat

Effect of Polyether Ether Ketone on Therapeutic Radiation to the Spine: A Pilot Study.

STUDY DESIGN: Cadaveric model. OBJECTIVES: To compare the effect of PEEK versus conventional implants on scatter radiation to a simulated tumor bed in the spine SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA.: Given the highly vasculature nature of the spine, it is the most common place for bony metastases. After surgical treatment of a spinal metastasis, adjuvant radiation therapy is typically administered. Radiation dosing is primarily limited by toxicity to the spinal cord. The scatter effect caused by metallic implants decreases the accuracy of dosing and can unintentionally increase the effective dose seen

Testicular function after radiotherapy for rectal cancer--a review.

INTRODUCTION: Eighty percent of all male rectal cancer patients are sexually active at the time of diagnosis. Because of modern multimodal therapy many can expect long-term survival. The testes can be exposed to scattered or direct radiation during radiotherapy, depending on their position in relation to the targeted volume. AIM: This review analyzes the current literature providing data on testicular exposure to radiation during radiotherapy for rectal cancer and the consequences on testicular function. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane. Ten original

Redundant protective barriers: minimizing operator occupational risk.

BACKGROUND: The ubiquitous use of less invasive therapeutic angiographic procedures has created the milieu for long-term occupational risk of cancer and genetic defects. This study set out to determine the relative effectiveness of redundant radiation protective barriers and their impact on operator total-body-ionizing radiation exposure in the catheterization suite. METHODS: Thermolucent dosimeter x-irradiation was measured inside and outside personal and movable protective barriers used concurrently during 50 consecutive procedures by a single operator. Additionally, the entrance/exit doses

Gridless adult cervical spine radiography and its' effect on image quality and radiation dose: A phantom study.

INTRODUCTION: Imaging of the cervical spine in general radiography is most frequently performed using an anti-scatter grid. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a gridless setting on image quality and radiation dose during digital radiography of the anteroposterior (AP) and lateral (LAT) cervical spine. METHODS: A phantom study was performed with a variety of tube voltages (63-75 kV) with and without an anti-scatter grid. The tube current time product (mAs) and dose area product (DAP) were recorded and used to calculate effective dose (ED) and individual organ dose usin

Using a convolutional neural network for human recognition in a staff dose management software for fluoroscopic interventional procedures.

Staff dose management is a continuing concern in fluoroscopically-guided interventional (FGI) procedures. Being unaware of radiation scatter levels can lead to unnecessarily high stochastic and deterministic risks due to the effects of absorbed dose by staff members. Our group has developed a scattered-radiation display system (SDS) capable of monitoring system parameters in real-time using a controller-area network (CAN) bus interface and displaying a color-coded mapping of the Compton-scatter distribution. This system additionally uses a time-of-flight depth sensing camera to track staff mem

A Novel Shielding Device for Cardiac Cath Labs.

This research evaluates the effectiveness of a large specialized cardiac catheterization laboratory shielding device (SCCLSD) placed perpendicular to the patient compared to traditional shielding methods in reducing occupational exposure to scattered x rays, contributing to the ongoing enhancement of radiation safety in the cardiac catheterization laboratory (CCL) setting. An experimental setup involving an anthropomorphic phantom on the catheterization table simulated radiation scatter from a patient. Measurements were taken systematically at various grid points and heights in the CCL using a

A slot region in the magnetosphere of Jupiter.

Understanding the balance between charged particle acceleration and loss is central to radiation belt research. Jupiter's Galilean moons orbit within its intense radiation environment and can act both as sources and sinks of energetic particles. Using observations from the Juno spacecraft, we identify large-scale depletions of energetic electrons along Europa's orbit. These depletions are too deep to result from direct absorption by the moon alone. Here we show that rapid electron losses, occurring within a timescale shorter than Jupiter's rotation, are driven by pitch angle scattering via whi

Fluoroscopic Procedure-Room Scatter-Dose Reduction Using a Region-of-Interest (ROI) Attenuator.

During fluoroscopically-guided interventional (FGI) procedures, dose to the patient as well as the scatter dose to staff can be high. However, a significant dose reduction can be possible by using a region-of-interest (ROI) attenuator that reduces the x-ray intensity in the peripheral x-ray field while providing full field of view imaging. In this work, we investigated the magnitude of scatter dose reduction to staff made possible by using an ROI attenuator composed of 0.7 mm Cu with a central circular hole that projected a 5.4 cm ROI onto a Kyoto anthropomorphic phantom in the head, chest, an

Scatter estimation and removal of anti-scatter grid-line artifacts from anthropomorphic head phantom images taken with a high resolution image detector.

In radiography, one of the best methods to eliminate image-degrading scatter radiation is the use of anti-scatter grids. However, with high-resolution dynamic imaging detectors, stationary anti-scatter grids can leave grid-line shadows and moiré patterns on the image, depending upon the line density of the grid and the sampling frequency of the x-ray detector. Such artifacts degrade the image quality and may mask small but important details such as small vessels and interventional device features. Appearance of these artifacts becomes increasingly severe as the detector spatial resolution is i

Comparison of a suspended radiation protection system versus standard lead apron for radiation exposure of a simulated interventionalist.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the radiation protective characteristics of a system designed to enhance operator protection while eliminating weight to the body and allowing freedom of motion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Radiation doses to a mock interventionalist were measured with calibrated dosimeters in a clinical interventional suite. A standard lead apron (SLA; Pb equivalent, 0.5 mm) was compared with a suspended radiation protection system (ZeroGravity; Zgrav) that shields from the top of the head to the calves (except the right arm and left forearm) with a complex overhead motion system that elimina

Comprehensive Investigation of the Eye-Cornea Structure Based on the Extended Techniques of Polarization-Sensitive Optical Coherence Tomography.

We present a universal technique for noninvasive investigation of thin multilayer optically transparent tissues based on polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography. To reach higher diagnostic accuracy, we revisit the model of the cornea structure and reconsider the physical features of the interaction of light with the tissue structural elements. In the scheme proposed, the probing beam is algorithmically adjustable such that the x-polarized radiation impinges each consecutive structural layer; the object beam is formed by the reflection and back-scattering. Its characteristics are fo

The title compound, C22H33NO12·CHCl3, was obtained as a product of a double aza-Michael addition of hydroxyl-amine on a Chiron with a known absolute configuration. The enanti-opure compound crystallized as a chloro-form solvate, in space group P1, and diffraction data were collected at room temperature with Ag Kα radiation. The Flack parameter refined to x = -0.01 (16); however, the Flack and Watkin 2AD plot clearly shows that differences between Friedel opposites (the D component of the plot) do not carry any reliable information about resonant scattering of Cl atoms, and are rather dominated

The influence of phantom size on output, peak scatter factor, and percentage depth dose in large-field photon irradiation.

Machine outputs, peak scatter factors, and central axis percentage depth dose distributions were measured for various phantom sizes in large radiation fields produced at extended distances by cobalt, 6-MV, and 10-MV photon beams. The results can be applied to practical total body irradiation procedures which usually involve treatment volumes smaller than the actual field sizes in order to provide a uniform total body exposure to radiation. Our study addresses the question of the appropriate phantom dimension to be used in the calibration of photon beams employed in total body irradiations. The
