Comparison of the background, needs, and expectations for genetic counseling of adults with experience with Down syndrome, Marfan syndrome, and neurofibromatosis.

We describe an analysis of the responses of 605 adults with experience with Down syndrome, Marfan syndrome, or neurofibromatosis (NF) to the BNE Scale, a scale specifically designed to assess the background, needs, and expectations (BNE) of genetic counseling patients. Significant group differences were found. Specifically, the respondents in the Down syndrome group reported more favorable beliefs about the condition and the availability of social support than the respondents in the other groups. Respondents in the NF group reported more unsureness about their condition and a greater need for

The telling my story quilting workshop: innovative group work with older African American women transitioning out of homelessness.

This article examines the use of a quilting workshop as a strategy for helping older African American women address the consequences of their homeless experience. In this examination, four studies are addressed: the original, the re-analysis, the interviews, and the quilting intervention. The relationship of quilting to group work and social support is described, and the use of quilting in the Telling My Story homeless research project is demonstrated. The researchers used the lay definition of quilting that implies the general meaning of attaching many disparate and unique pieces of material

Treating eating disorders in primary care.

Binge-eating disorder, bulimia nervosa, and anorexia nervosa are potentially life-threatening disorders that involve complex psychosocial issues. A strong therapeutic relationship between the physician and patient is necessary for assessing the psychosocial and medical factors used to determine the appropriate level of care. Most patients can be effectively treated in the outpatient setting by a health care team that includes a physician, a registered dietitian, and a therapist. Psychiatric consultation may be beneficial. Patients may require inpatient care if they are suicidal or have life-th

Approaches to the alcohol problem in the workplace.

The main problem areas posed by either alcohol or alcoholism in the workplace are identified as alcohol-related accidents, reduced work performance and loss of working time. In addition to the heavy costs of these problems for industry, it is suggested that a further and generally ignored burden comes from the premature death in middle life of alcoholics who will include a disproportionately large number of top management and more skilled employees. A comparison with the history of alcohol-related road traffic accidents suggests that there is scope for large savings from an effective campaign

Profile of the pathological gambler.

Pathological (compulsive) gambling is a serious emotional and social problem that has existed for centuries but has only recently been recognized as a distinct diagnostic entity that can be effectively treated. The development and progression of pathological gambling are outlined. The progression of the disorder through three identifiable phases leads to predictable complications. The treatment of the gambler within the framework of Gamblers Anonymous and/or by mental health professionals is described.

[Recognizing and treating drug addicts. Part 2. Differential diagnosis, therapy].

Persons addicted to opiates often have fresh injection scars on the skin directly above the veins in the arms and legs. These appear as well as scars from abscesses and burns, tattoos, advanced tooth decay and signs of chronic hepatitis. An intensive consumption of hallucinogens is often connected to an inclination toward apathy and a loss of contact to reality (amotivational syndrome). It is necessary to have a sufficiently wide spectrum of therapeutic and rehabilitation measures being offered, due to the wide range of variants one can expect in the personality structure and the primary distu

The relationship of child maltreatment and self-capacities with distress when telling one's story of childhood sexual abuse.

This study examined the impact of telling one's story of childhood sexual abuse and its relationship with the survivor's self-capacities and history of other child maltreatment. The baseline data were collected from 134 female CSA survivors who were participating in a large intervention study. Participants were given 10 minutes to describe their childhood sexual abuse and completed a post-interview questionnaire assessing post-traumatic stress symptoms and their emotional response. The distress in response to their narrative was both predicted and mediated by the survivors' self-capacities and

A Supportive Group Intervention for Caregivers to Patients Diagnosed With Glioblastoma: Protocol for the SUGRI Study.

BACKGROUND: Caregivers to a person diagnosed with a glioblastoma often face significant responsibilities, balancing the demands of care with the complexities of the disease and treatment trajectory, while also coping with concerns and uncertainty of the future. Caregivers report unmet needs of information and support throughout the patient's disease and treatment trajectory, and they may benefit from targeted supportive care interventions. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to develop, test, and evaluate the feasibility of a supportive group intervention among caregivers to patients diagnose

Adults with problematic opioid use released from jail: Mutual help groups and medication support contribute to a greater likelihood of opioid abstinence.

BACKGROUND: Although medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) improve outcomes for persons with opioid use disorder (OUD), it is unclear whether augmentation with mutual help groups (MHGs), such as 12-Step programs, enhances abstinence following jail release. This study examined how MHG and MOUD together affect abstinence in persons with problematic opioid use in the 6 months post-incarceration. METHOD: We subset to 328 adult participants who completed baseline, 3- and 6-month follow-ups. All screened positive for problematic opioid use upon discharge from jail, primarily in Chicago. Partic

Expanding the Phenotype of SETD5-Related Disorder Through a Facebook Support Group.

BACKGROUND: SETD5-related disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition caused by pathogenic variants in the SETD5 gene. Reported features include intellectual disability, developmental delay, autism spectrum disorder, feeding difficulties, hypotonia, and dysmorphic facial features. The disorder was first described in 2014 with fewer than 75 reported cases in the literature to date. Given its rarity, affected families often turn to online communities for information and support. Previous studies have highlighted the growing role of social media platforms, such as Facebook, in connecting and suppo

Incorporating Family Members Into Treatment for Perinatal Psychiatric Disorders: A Pilot Program.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Though perinatal psychiatric disorders affect the entire family, most perinatal mental health interventions only include mothers. Here, we detail the implementation of a single-session, virtual, family support group for partners and family members of mothers with perinatal psychiatric disorders. METHODS: The family support group was created within a mother-baby partial hospital program for people experiencing perinatal psychiatric disorders. Patients in the program provided consent to contact their partner or family member. This person was offered participation in

Factors Influencing Adolescents' Use of Anonymous Reporting Systems to Seek Help for Peers in Severe Mental Distress.

PURPOSE: Adolescent mental distress, including suicidality, is a pressing public health problem facing contemporary adolescents. School-based programs facilitate early identification and intervention, yet barriers remain in disclosing peer mental health issues due to potential social repercussions. Technology-facilitated reporting systems (TFRS) used in >50% of K-12 schools offer a discreet reporting option, yet little is known about factors that influence youths' use of TFRS. METHODS: This study evaluates the use of TFRS among middle school adolescents who know peers in severe mental distres

Assessment of a Peer Support Group Intervention for Undocumented Latinx Immigrants With Kidney Failure.

IMPORTANCE: Most undocumented immigrants with kidney failure rely on emergency dialysis (defined as dialysis after a patient presents as critically ill) and experience significant depression and anxiety and high mortality. Culturally and language-concordant peer support group interventions may be associated with reduced depression and anxiety and may provide emotional support. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the feasibility and acceptability of a single-group peer support group intervention. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This qualitative and single-group prospective study for undocumented imm

[The German research network CURE-Net : A benefit for patients with rare diseases].

With the help of the media, there is growing public awareness for the problems associated with rare diseases and their impact on the lives of those affected and their families. Bladder exstrophy-epispadias complex (BEEC) is also a part of the group of rare diseases within the urological field. The German network CURE-Net was founded in 2009 to systematically collect data regarding the epidemiological and molecular causes, and clinical and psychosocial effects of congenital urorectal malformations. With the help of self-help groups a national registry could be established for systematic data re…
