Survey of brucellosis at the wildlife-livestock interface on the Zimbabwean side of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area.

A cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the seroprevalence of bovine brucellosis in communal cattle and wildlife at a wildlife-livestock interface in the southeast lowveld of Zimbabwe, part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area. RBT and c-Elisa were used in serial for detection of antibodies against Brucella spp. Between July 2007 and October 2009, a total of 1,158 cattle were tested and the overall seroprevalence of brucellosis was 9.9%. A total of 97 wild animals (African buffaloes (n=47), impala (n=33), kudu (n=16), and giraffe (n=1)) were tested and only one anima

Transmission potential of primary pneumonic plague: time inhomogeneous evaluation based on historical documents of the transmission network.

BACKGROUND: The transmission potential of primary pneumonic plague, caused by Yersinia pestis, is one of the key epidemiological determinants of a potential biological weapon, and requires clarification and time dependent interpretation. METHOD: This study estimated the reproduction number and its time dependent change through investigations of outbreaks in Mukden, China (1946), and Madagascar (1957). Reconstruction of an epidemic tree, which shows who infected whom, from the observed dates of onset was performed using the serial interval. Furthermore, a likelihood based approach was used for

Acute hepatitis E in Catania (eastern Sicily) 1980-1994. The role of hepatitis E virus.

Between 1980 and 1994, 540 patients with acute viral hepatitis were admitted to hospital at the Department of Infectious Diseases of Catania (eastern Sicily). Twenty-five patients out of 540 were assessed as having non-A, non-B, non-C hepatitis. These subjects were studied for anti-HEV IgM and IgG seroprevalence by testing serial serum samples collected 1, 4, 12 and 24 weeks after the onset of acute disease. Fourteen of 25 samples (56%) seroconverted to anti-HEV IgG antibodies. No sample was positive for anti-HEV IgG at week 1, ten samples were positive at week 4 and the remainder at week 12.

Genetic mutations driving ciprofloxacin resistance in laboratory-evolved Salmonella Typhimurium.

Ciprofloxacin resistance in Salmonella Typhimurium is a significant public health concern, and the mechanisms by which the resistance evolves are poorly defined. Here, by serial passaging under antibiotic selection, we isolated ciprofloxacin-resistant S. Typhimurium mutants and subjected them to whole-genome sequencing to reveal the major mutations associated with resistance. The Low CipR mutant acquired four chromosomal mutations in ramR, icdA, lipB, and gyrA, and the High CipR mutant gained additional mutations in gyrB, yaiC, and corA. Functional characterization determined that mutations in

Recent trends and disparities in screen-based sedentary behavior and physical activity among U.S. overweight youth, 2018-2022.

BACKGROUND: Sedentary behavior (SB) and physical activity (PA) are crucial factors influencing health outcomes in overweight children and adolescents. However, recent changes in SB and PA trends among U.S. overweight youth have not been well described, limiting the development of evidence-based clinical and public health interventions. METHODS: Serial, cross-sectional analyses were conducted using data from the National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH) on U.S. overweight youth aged 6-17 years, spanning from 2018 to 2022. Linear regression models were employed to analyze time trends, with su

Exercise-responsive endocrine-metabolic mediators in diabetes and cardiometabolic disorders: a systematic scoping review and evidence map.

BACKGROUND: Exercise-responsive endocrine-metabolic mediators may contribute to the systemic cardiometabolic adaptations induced by physical activity, but the literature spans diverse mediator classes, exercise paradigms, disease contexts, and experimental models. We conducted a systematic scoping review and evidence map to characterize the structure of this evidence and the biological relations examined across the field. METHODS: PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science Core Collection, and Scopus were searched from database inception through 7 August 2026. Titles and abstracts, followed by full texts

[Ultrastructural study of 36 lymph node sites of Hodgkin's disease].

The authors report their ultrastructural findings of 36 involved lymph-nodes in Hodgkin's disease (HD), before any treatment. More than 400 tumour cells were studied. An analytical study was carried out on the different aspects presented by the nuclei (uni or multi-lobated); the nucleoli (compact, reticulate or dispersed); and the cytoplasm (immunoblastic, complex, intermediate). No cellular structure evoking phagocytic activity with digestion, and consequently an eventual histiomonocytic origin, could be detected even on serial sections. The presence of lipid inclusions, sometimes of glycogen

Fatigue in inflammatory bowel disease: Mechanisms, assessment, and management strategies.

Fatigue is among the most prevalent and disabling symptoms in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), affecting a substantial proportion of patients during active disease and persisting in many despite clinical remission. It is multidimensional, spanning physical, cognitive, and emotional domains, and it is a major determinant of health-related quality of life, work disability, and healthcare use. Correlations with conventional markers of intestinal inflammation are typically modest, indicating important contributions from extraintestinal, neuroimmune, nutritional, endocrine, sleep-related, and psyc

Rates and predictors of loss to follow-up for sporadic vestibular schwannomas undergoing imaging surveillance.

OBJECTIVE: Imaging surveillance with serial MRI, or a "wait-and-scan" approach, is a management option for patients with small or medium-sized vestibular schwannomas (VSs). Prior publications have indicated no distinct quality of life advantage to upfront treatment compared with initial wait-and-scan management. However, imaging surveillance is dependent on patient adherence to follow-up. In this study, the authors aimed to identify rates and predictors of patient loss to follow-up during wait-and-scan management of sporadic VS. METHODS: A single-center study was conducted including all patie

Levels of prothrombin activation peptide F1+2 in patients with a bleeding tendency.

Numerous recent publications point to significant improvements in haemostasis in the bleeding patient suffering from haemophilia with inhibitors when a recombinant activated factor VII (rFVIIa) molecule is administered in high doses. In theory, activated factor VII (FVIIa) is believed to initiate haemostasis through its physiological interaction with tissue factor at sites of cellular injury, whereby factor X (FX) activation and, in consequence, thrombin formation is amplified. There has been speculation, however, whether high circulating FVII procoagulant (FVII:C) levels may induce systemic c

Mouse mutants as models in endocrine research.

Although Shire (1979) has listed some forty-eight mouse mutants of interest to the endocrinologist, this short review has concentrated upon eleven mutations which have resulted in a significant number of scientific publications over the last 4 or 5 years. The selection of references has had to be limited, but it should be possible easily to expand the list given in this review. Although the proximate cause of none of the eleven mutations has been identified with certainty, the abnormalities of function have included hormone deficiencies and receptor and post-receptor malfunctions. It is perhap

Insights into novel diagnostic assay development, antimicrobial resistance, and pathogenicity in Proteus mirabilis through pan-genome analysis.

Proteus mirabilis, a significant pathogen associated with human urinary tract infections (UTIs), demonstrates escalating multidrug resistance (MDR) that complicates clinical management. Accurate identification and in-depth genomic analysis are essential for monitoring and controlling this pathogen. This study aimed to identify the species-specific gene repertoire, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and virulence genetic profiles through pan-genome analysis to develop novel detection methods and better understand emerging public health threats. The genus Proteus exhibits an open pan-genome, with P

The ITCC-P4 PDX Platform Enables Preclinical Testing of Pediatric Cancers.

UNLABELLED: Cancer is the leading cause of disease-related deaths among children in high-income countries. Tumor heterogeneity and the lack of mechanism of action-based therapeutic options are key challenges to overcome to improve the survival of pediatric patients with cancer. To address these challenges, we formed the European Union-Innovative Medicines Initiative 2 (EU-IMI2) funded public-private partnership "Innovative Therapies for Children with Cancer Paediatric Preclinical Proof-of-Concept Platform" (ITCC-P4), which built a large repertoire of patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models repr

PERSEVERE: longitudinal assessment of quality of life and treatment toxicities in Chinese breast cancer patients - a multicentre cohort study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Survival outcomes for early-stage breast cancer have improved substantially; however, many survivors experience persistent treatment-related toxicities that adversely affect long-term quality of life (QoL) and functional recovery. Prospective survivorship data from China remain limited. The PERSEVERE study aims to characterise longitudinal trajectories of QoL and treatment-related toxicities among Chinese women treated for stage I-III breast cancer and to identify factors associated with suboptimal recovery. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: PERSEVERE is a prospective, multicentre, observat

The Michigan Sibling Immunity Birth Study (M-SIBS): Study design protocol for a unique food allergy birth cohort.

BACKGROUND: Food allergy is a rapidly escalating public health concern, yet the biologic pathways that link early-life exposures with disease onset remain poorly defined. No existing food-allergy birth cohort has yet paired criterion-standard oral food challenges with comprehensive, family-wide multiomics profiling. OBJECTIVE: The Michigan Sibling Immunity Birth Study (M-SIBS) was established to elucidate early-life genetic and environmental interactions that drive disease. By enrolling entire families, including atopic siblings, the study leverages shared genetics, perinatal sampling, and ho

Development of a HiFi-LAMP assay for the detection of herpes simplex virus type 1.

Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) has a significant impact on global public health. Developing a rapid, sensitive, and specific diagnostic assay for the detection of HSV-1 is of critical clinical significance for guiding individualized therapy and optimizing outcomes. A high-fidelity loop-mediated isothermal amplification (HiFi-LAMP) assay was developed by targeting the highly conserved region of the HSV-1 US4 gene. The sensitivity of the assay was determined using serial dilutions of standard templates, and specificity was assessed against ten common pathogens. Intra- and inter-assay reprod

Immune Suppression, Preexisting Immunity, and Mutation Tendency Shaped SARS-CoV-2 Evolution in Persistent Infection.

SARS-CoV-2 evolution in persistent infection, which may induce long COVID-19, is predominantly manifested in immunocompromised hosts, who act as the viral reservoirs for future outbreaks. Therefore, understanding the evolutionary mechanisms of novel variants that can evade preexisting immune responses is critical to guide public health measures and develop vaccines tailored for vulnerable populations. We used next-generation sequencing and phylogenetic methods to delineate the evolutionary and mutational profiles of SARS-CoV-2 variants using serial oropharyngeal swab samples from 5 individuals
