Molecular Epidemiology of Antimicrobial Resistance and Virulence Profiles of Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., and Vibrio spp. Isolated from Coastal Seawater for Aquaculture.

The occurrence of waterborne antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) bacteria in areas of high-density oyster cultivation is an ongoing environmental and public health threat given the popularity of shellfish consumption, water-related human recreation throughout coastal Thailand, and the geographical expansion of Thailand's shellfish industry. This study characterized the association of phenotypic and genotypic AMR, including extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) production, and virulence genes isolated from waterborne Escherichia coli (E. coli) (n = 84), Salmonella enterica (S. enterica) subsp. enteric

Long Term Memory Outcome of Repetitive, Low-Level Dietary Exposure to Domoic Acid in Native Americans.

Domoic acid (DA) is a marine-based neurotoxin that, if ingested via tainted shellfish, is associated with Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning (ASP). These acute effects of elevated DA exposure in humans have been well described. In contrast, the long-term impacts of lower level, repetitive, presumably safe doses of DA (less than 20 ppm) are minimally known. Since Native Americans (NA) residing in coastal communities of the Pacific NW United States are particularly vulnerable to DA exposure, this study focuses on the long-term, 8-year memory outcome associated with their repeated dietary consumption of

Recent advances in crustacean melanosis: Mechanism of melanosis, evaluation methods, and inhibition techniques.

Melanosis in crustacean is attributable to the catalytic action of polyphenol oxidase. This condition is organoleptically detrimental, markedly diminishing the perceived value of the product and eliciting a strong adverse reaction from consumers. To address this issue, we provide a comprehensive summary and update on the mechanisms, contributing factors, assessment methods, and strategies for mitigating melanosis within this study. Our research demonstrates that the underlying causes of melanosis vary among different crustacean species and are influenced by the location and activity levels of

Origin determination of the Eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) using a combination of whole-body compound-specific isotope analysis and heavy metal analysis.

Various samples of the Eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica, were collected from five harvest bay areas in the Gulf of Mexico coastal waters of Florida (FL), Louisiana (LA) and Texas (TX). Cadmium and lead concentrations from the extracted whole-body soft tissues were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and bulk δ13C and δ15N isotope ratios and amino-acid-specific δ13C values were analyzed via isotope ratio mass-spectrometry (IRMS). The combined data was subjected to multivariate statistical analysis to assess whether oysters could be linked to their harvest are

PSP toxin release from the cyanobacterium Raphidiopsis brookii D9 (Nostocales) can be induced by sodium and potassium ions.

Paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) toxins are a group of naturally occurring neurotoxic alkaloids produced among several genera of primarily freshwater cyanobacteria and marine dinoflagellates. Although saxitoxin (STX) and analogs are all potent Na(+) channel blockers in vertebrate cells, the functional role of these compounds for the toxigenic microorganisms is unknown. Based upon the known importance of monovalent cations (such as sodium) in the maintenance of cellular homeostasis and ion channel function, we examined the effect of high extracellular concentrations of these ions on growth,

Magnetic nanostructures for marine and freshwater toxins removal.

Marine and freshwater toxins contaminate water resources, shellfish and aquaculture products, causing a broad range of toxic effects in humans and animals. Different core-shell nanoparticles were tested as a new sorbent for removing marine and freshwater toxins from liquid media. Water solutions were contaminated with 20 μg/L of marine toxins and up to 50 μg/L of freshwater toxins and subsequently treated with 250 or 125 mg/L of nanoparticles. Under these conditions, carbon nanoparticles removed around 70% of saxitoxins, spirolides, and azaspiracids, and up to 38% of diarrheic shellfish poison

Temperature effects on the nutritional quality in Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas) during ultraviolet depuration.

BACKGROUND: Oysters are mainly consumed in the raw form, so it is important to get rid of bacteria and other harmful substances. Ultraviolet (UV) sterilization depuration is a commonly used method and does not produce chemical residues or act directly on shellfish, resulting in minimal adverse effects on flavor. This study simulated the industrial depuration process using UV sterilization to depurate Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas). The effects of different temperatures (15, 20, and 25 °C) on the quality and taste components of C. gigas were investigated by measuring changes in physiologic

Pathology and reproductive health of queen conch (Lobatus gigas) in St. Kitts.

Queen conch, Lobatus gigas, are one of the largest commercial fisheries in the Caribbean and are severely depleted due to overharvesting. Dwindling and fragmented populations are at high risk to stochastic events such as disease epidemics; however, there is a paucity of literature regarding queen conch disease. A histopathological survey was conducted to assess the disease status of St. Kitts' queen conch populations, and contribute to the little information known about L. gigas pathology. Using a standard dissection and sampling protocol, pathology status was assessed in 61 L. gigas sampled o

High-frequency observations of toxigenic microalgae and phycotoxins reveal contrasting HAB dynamics in the Beagle Channel.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) pose a recurrent threat to sub-Antarctic coastal ecosystems such as the Beagle Channel. Here, we used a 15-month high-frequency dataset (January 2021-April 2022) to assess the spatiotemporal dynamics of toxigenic microalgae and associated phycotoxins across multiple compartments, including plankton, bivalves, and passive samplers, together with concurrent oceanographic and meteorological conditions. Alexandrium catenella was the dominant toxic species, producing paralytic shellfish toxins (PST) during two consecutive austral summers with contrasting intensity. The 2

Assessment of potentially toxic element contamination in commercially harvested invertebrates from the Beibu Gulf, China.

Marine pollutants, especially potentially toxic elements (PTEs), increasingly threaten the ecological environment and fishery resources of the Beibu Gulf due to their bioaccumulative nature, toxicity, and persistence. However, the occurrences of multiple PTEs in marine invertebrates within this region remains unclear. Hence, a total of 18 species of commercially harvested invertebrates (shrimp, crab, cephalopod, shellfish, and sea cucumber) were collected from the Beibu Gulf, and the concentrations of nine important PTEs (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) were examined. Subsequent stable

Association of zoonotic protozoan parasites with microplastics in seawater and implications for human and wildlife health.

Plastics are widely recognized as a pervasive marine pollutant. Microplastics have been garnering increasing attention due to reports documenting their ingestion by animals, including those intended for human consumption. Their accumulation in the marine food chain may also pose a threat to wildlife that consume species that can accumulate microplastic particles. Microplastic contamination in marine ecosystems has thus raised concerns for both human and wildlife health. Our study addresses an unexplored area of research targeting the interaction between plastic and pathogen pollution of coasta

The inhibition of CHO-K1-BH4 cell proliferation and induction of chromosomal aberrations by brevetoxins in vitro.

Brevetoxins (PbTxs) are highly potent trans-syn polyether neurotoxins produced during blooms of several species of marine dinoflagellates, most notably Karenia brevis. These neurotoxins act on voltage-sensitive sodium channels prolonging the active state. During red tides, the commercial fishing and tourism industries experience millions of dollars of lost revenue. Human consumption of shellfish contaminated with PbTxs results in neurotoxic shellfish poisoning (NSP). Additionally, blooms of K. brevis are potentially responsible for adverse human health effects such as respiratory irritation an

Prevalence of food allergy in 137 latex-allergic patients.

There have been reports of increased prevalence of certain food allergies in patients with Type I latex allergy (LA). A detailed food allergy history was obtained from 137 patients with LA. Latex allergy was defined by positive history of IgE mediated reactions to contact with latex and positive skin prick test to latex and/or positive in vitro test (AlaSTAT and/or Pharmacia CAP). Food allergy was diagnosed by a convincing history of possible IgE mediated symptoms occurring within 60 minutes of ingestion. We identified 49 potential allergic reactions to foods in 29 (21.1%) patients. Foods resp

Artemia is capable of spreading oocysts of Cryptosporidium and the cysts of Giardia.

The capability for ingesting and spreading the fixed oocysts of Cryptosporidium and fixed cysts of Giardia, two waterborne protozoan parasites, by Artemia franciscana, a microcrustacean widely used as live diet in fish and shellfish larviculture, was demonstrated using differential interference contrast and immunofluorescence microscopy. Our findings suggest the possibility that this microcrustacean could serve as a disseminating vehicle of both parasites in aquatic environments.

Ovarian toxicity of 2,6-di-tert-butyl-hydroxytoluene on female Ruditapes philippinarum: Reproductive endocrine disruption and oxidative stress.

Synthetic phenolic antioxidants (SPAs) are the most widely used antioxidants in the world. There is a growing concern due to their potential toxic effects and high pollution levels in aquatic environments. Existing studies have confirmed the neurotoxic, immunotoxic, and developmental toxicity of SPAs on aquatic organisms. However, there is limited research on the reproductive toxicity of SPAs, particularly in aquatic invertebrates. In this study, female Ruditapes philippinarum were selected as research objects to investigate the reproductive toxicity effects of typical SPAs 2,6-di-tert-butyl h

Overview of key phytoplankton toxins and their recent occurrence in the North and Baltic Seas.

The frequency and intensity of harmful algal blooms (HABs) appear to be on the rise globally. There is also evidence of the geographic spreading of toxic strains of these algae. Consequently, methods had to be established and new ones are still needed for the evaluation of possible hazards caused by increased algal toxin production in the marine food chain. Different clinical effects of algae-related poisoning have attracted scientific attention; paralytic shellfish poisoning, diarrhetic shellfish poisoning, and amnesic shellfish poisoning are among the most common. Additionally, cyanobacteria

The eating habits and lifestyle habits of shift workers: findings from the 2018 National Health and Nutrition Survey, Japan.

Shift work increases chronic disease risk, but specific contributing factors, such as diet and lifestyle remain unclear. We compared eating habits and lifestyle characteristics between male and female shift and daytime workers across a variety of occupations using data from the 2018 Japan National Health and Nutrition Survey (n=1,814). Our analysis focused on food intake, lifestyle characteristics, and considerations in food selection between shift and daytime workers. Both male and female shift workers consumed significantly less fish and shellfish and had a shorter sleep duration than daytim
