Mechanistic insights into aggregation process of graphene oxide and bacterial cells in microbial reduction of ferrihydrite.

Microbial reduction of ferrihydrite is prevalent in natural environments and plays an important role in reductive dissolution of Fe(III) minerals. With consistent release of anthropogenic graphene oxide (GO) into water bodies, new changes in the Fe(III)-reducing microorganisms/ferrihydrite binary system demand attention. Herein, we focused on the interaction of GO and bacterial cells in view of colloidal stability and interfacial forces, and on the consequences for microbial ferrihydrite reduction. The results showed that the addition of GO decreased the bioreduction efficiency of ferrihydrite

Mechanisms of polystyrene microplastic degradation by the microbially driven Fenton reaction.

Natural hydroxyl radical (·OH) production, which partially occurs through the microbially driven Fenton reaction, can enhance the degradation of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs). However, ·OH causes damage to microorganisms, which might in turn restrain the microbially driven Fenton reaction. Thus, whether PS-MPs can be continuously degraded by the microbially driven Fenton reaction and how they are degraded are still unknown. A pure-culture system using Shewanella putrefaciens 200 was set up to explore the effect and mechanism of microbially driven Fenton reaction on PS-MP degradation. In a

Metagenomics diversity analysis of sulfate-reducing bacteria and their impact on biocorrosion and mitigation approach using an organometallic inhibitor.

Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) have impacted the biocorrosion process for various industrial sectors, especially in the oil and gas industry. The higher stability over extreme conditions is the key parameter for their survival in such environments. So far, many materials have been tried to minimize or control the growth of SRB. In the present study, an organo-metallic compound of the zinc sorbate (ZS) was successfully synthesized by the simple co-precipitation method and its improved antibacterial activity against SRB. The SRB consortia are enriched from the sub-surface soil sample and identi

Microbial Communities of Seawater and Coastal Soil of Russian Arctic Region and Their Potential for Bioremediation from Hydrocarbon Pollutants.

The development of Arctic regions leads to pollution of marine and coastal environments with oil and petroleum products. The purpose of this work was to determine the diversity of microbial communities in seawater, as well as in littoral and coastal soil, and the potential ability of their members to degrade hydrocarbons degradation and to isolate oil-degrading bacteria. Using high-throughput sequencing of the V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene, the dominance of bacteria in polar communities was shown, the proportion of archaea did not exceed 2% (of the total number of sequences in the libraries).

Evaluation of antifouling activity of eight commercially available organic chemicals against the early foulers marine bacteria and Ulva spores.

Environmental impacts caused by tin and copper based commercial antifouling (AF) paints were proved to be detrimental to aquatic ecosystems. Therefore, a search of environmental friendly AF compounds to be used in marine paint to protect the surface of maritime developmental structures from the unwanted biofouling is a burning issue of the present time. Commercially available eight organic chemicals--allyl isothiocyanate, beta-myrecene, cis-3-hexenyl acetate, citral, ethyl heptanoate, eugenol, methyl caproate, and octyl alcohol were evaluated forAF activities using both laboratory and field as

Microplastic-derived dissolved organic matter modulates microbial nitrate and arsenate reduction: Extracellular electron transfer and intracellular metabolic responses.

Photoaged microplastics release dissolved organic matter (MPs-DOM) with redox activity that may influence coupled contaminant transformations under anoxic conditions. Here, we investigated DOM derived from polystyrene (PS) and polylactic acid (PLA) after accelerated UV/H2O2 oxidation and examined its effects on concurrent nitrate and As(V) reduction by Shewanella sp. CN32. FT-ICR MS, EEM-PARAFAC, and redox measurements revealed clear polymer-dependent differences. PS-DOM contained higher proportions of formulas in polycyclic-aromatic and polyphenolic regions and exhibited a substantially highe

Pectin-Zein-IPA nanoparticles promote functional recovery and alleviate neuroinflammation after spinal cord injury.

INTRODUCTION: Spinal cord injury (SCI) impairs the balance of gut microbiomes, which further aggravates inflammation in the injured areas and inhibits axonal regeneration. The intestinal microbiome plays an important role in SCI and regulating intestinal microbiome promotes SCI repair. However, current studies have shown that indole-3 propionate (IPA), a metabolite of gut bacteria, can promote axonal regeneration. However, the short half-life of IPA limits its effectiveness. Gut microbiota plays a role in the progression of SCI, but the studies about diet regulates intestinal flora metabolites

An inundation threshold regulates nitrate reduction pathways in mangrove sediments.

Estuarine hydrological regimes are increasingly altered by dam operations and extreme climate events, reshaping inundation in intertidal wetlands. However, how inundation regulates nitrate (NO3-) fate remains unclear. We conducted an 18-month, elevation-controlled marsh-organ experiment with Avicennia marina-planted and unvegetated sediments across a 0 %-65 % gradient in mean inundation frequency. We combined 15N isotope tracing and metagenomics to quantify NO3- reduction pathways and associated microbial attributes. In unvegetated sediments, increasing inundation reduced the contribution of d

c-di-GMP-Mediated Biofilm Regulation in Specific Spoilage Organisms: Mechanisms and Control Strategies in Aquatic Products.

Aquatic product spoilage primarily results from specific spoilage organisms (SSOs) such as Pseudomonas, Aeromonas, and Shewanella, with biofilm formation playing a pivotal role in accelerating deterioration. The bacterial second messenger bis-(3'-5')-cyclic dimeric guanosine monophosphate (c-di-GMP) orchestrates this process by regulating biofilm assembly. Intracellular c-di-GMP levels, modulated by diguanylate cyclases (DGCs) and phosphodiesterases (PDEs), dictate bacterial behavior: higher concentrations suppress motility, promote adhesion, and trigger extracellular polymeric substance (EPS)

Multi-state study of Enterobacteriaceae harboring extended-spectrum beta-lactamase and carbapenemase genes in U.S. drinking water.

Community-associated acquisition of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase- (ESBL) and carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae has significantly increased in recent years, necessitating greater inquiry into potential exposure routes, including food and water sources. In high-income countries, drinking water is often neglected as a possible source of community exposure to antibiotic-resistant organisms. We screened coliform-positive tap water samples (n = 483) from public and private water systems in six states of the United States for blaCTX-M, blaSHV, blaTEM, blaKPC, blaNDM, and blaOXA-48-type g

Simultaneous Transformation of Commingled Trichloroethylene, Tetrachloroethylene, and 1,4-Dioxane by a Microbially Driven Fenton Reaction in Batch Liquid Cultures.

UNLABELLED: Improper disposal of 1,4-dioxane and the chlorinated organic solvents trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (also known as perchloroethylene [PCE]) has resulted in widespread contamination of soil and groundwater. In the present study, a previously designed microbially driven Fenton reaction system was reconfigured to generate hydroxyl (HO˙) radicals for simultaneous transformation of source zone levels of single, binary, and ternary mixtures of TCE, PCE, and 1,4-dioxane. The reconfigured Fenton reaction system was driven by fed batch cultures of the Fe(III)-reducing facu

A 3D-printed algal-bacterial microreactor for photobiological hydrogen production coupled with actual wastewater treatment.

Microalgae-driven photosynthetic hydrogen production has emerged as a promising approach to tackle the global energy crisis and reduce carbon emissions. Simultaneously, microalgae can remove phosphorus and nitrogen from wastewater while sequestering CO2 during hydrogen production. However, challenges such as the intrinsic oxygen sensitivity of hydrogenases and the relatively low hydrogen productivity remain major hurdles that constrain the process viability of microalgae for combined wastewater treatment and hydrogen production. Living bacterial reactor potently activates tumor immunogenic ferroptosis via cysteine depletion and photothermal therapy.

Bacterial combination therapy offers immense promise for treating aggressive "cold" solid tumors, such as triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). However, the clinical translatability of traditional genetic engineering is often hampered by operational complexity and genetic instability. Here, we developed A-SPB-a non-genetically engineered, multi-functional living bioreactor based on Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 (SO), surface-modified with Prussian blue (PB) nanoparticles and attenuated via deoxycholic acid (DA) treatment. This platform serves as an in situ metabolic factory that "hijacks" the sul

Exploring the anti-quorum sensing potential of sea anemone bacterial symbionts from Samalona Island (Spermonde Archipelago) in South Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Vannamei shrimp is a promising aquaculture commodity, but presence of Vibrio parahaemolyticus bacteria in cultivation poses a challenge to increasing productivity. Quorum sensing allows bacteria to regulate pathogenicity based on population density. The aim of this study were to screen antiquorum sensing agents that can inhibit bacterial communication, thereby reducing pathogen virulence. The method used in the screening process goes through several stages, such as isolation of anemone symbiont bacteria, screening for inhibition of violacein and antibiofilm production, as well as molecular ide

Study of the key biotic and abiotic parameters influencing ammonium removal from wastewaters by Fe3+-mediated anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Feammox).

The release of ammonia (as NH4+) into water bodies causes serious environmental problems. Therefore, the removal of ammonia from wastewater effluents has become a worldwide concern. New autotrophic biological alternatives for ammonia removal could reduce the limitations of conventional organic carbon-dependent nitrification-denitrification methods. Here, the potential of anaerobic ammonium oxidation coupled to Fe3+ reduction (a process known as Feammox) is studied in wastewater treatment plants of the yeast and beer production industry, not related to ammonium or iron treatment. This process i

Biogenic ferrihydrite-humin coprecipitate as an electron donor for the enhancement of microbial denitrification by Pseudomonas stutzeri.

Nitrate pollution of groundwater has become an increasingly serious environmental problem that poses a great threat to aquatic ecosystems and to human health. Previous studies have shown that solid-phase humin (HM) can act as an additional electron donor to support microbial denitrification in the bioremediation of nitrate-contaminated groundwater where electron donor is deficient. However, the electron-donating capacities of HMs vary widely. In this study, we introduced ferrihydrite and prepared ferrihydrite-humin (Fh-HM) coprecipitates via biotic means to strengthen their electron-donating c
