The assessment of analogical thinking modifiability among regular, special education, disadvantaged, and mentally retarded children.

The objectives of the current study were (a) to develop a measure of children's analogical thinking modifiability (CATM) based on the Feuerstein, Rand, and Hoffman (1979) theory of dynamic assessment of cognitive modifiability, (b) to compare the performance of groups assumed to be differentially modified by intervention, (c) to compare CATM performance with performance on a conventional test, and (d) to study qualitative changes after a learning process. Subjects were disadvantaged, regular, and special education kindergarten children (N = 140), and mentally retarded children (N = 20). The CA

Attentional Bias Modification for Social Anxiety Disorder: What do Patients Think and Why does it Matter?

BACKGROUND: In the past decade, a great deal of research has examined the efficacy and mechanisms of attentional bias modification (ABM), a computerized cognitive training intervention for anxiety and other disorders. However, little research has examined how anxious patients perceive ABM, and it is unclear to what extent perceptions of ABM influence outcome. AIMS: To examine patient perceptions of ABM across two studies, using a mixed methods approach. METHOD: In the first study, participants completed a traditional ABM program and received a hand-out with minimal information about the purp

Sound Guides Object Size Choices in African Penguins Through Pitch-Size Association.

The brain's ability to associate information from different sensory modalities, known as cross-modal integration, is crucial for forming a coherent perception of objects and events. When such associations follow systematic and predictable patterns, they are referred to as cross-modal correspondences. Humans, for example, tend to associate large objects with low-pitched sounds and small objects with high-pitched sounds, a phenomenon known as pitch-size cross-modal correspondence. This phenomenon has been documented in several vertebrate species, yet direct experimental evidence in avian species

The Louder, the Longer: Object Length Perception Is Influenced by Loudness, but Not by Pitch.

Sound by itself can be a reliable source of information about an object's size. For instance, we are able to estimate the size of objects merely on the basis of the sound they make when falling on the floor. Moreover, loudness and pitch are crossmodally linked to size. We investigated if sound has an effect on size estimation even in the presence of visual information, that is if the manipulation of the sound produced by a falling object influences visual length estimation. Participants watched videos of wooden dowels hitting a hard floor and estimated their lengths. Sound was manipulated by (

Somatosensory cortical representation of the body size.

The knowledge of the size of our own body parts is essential for accurately moving in space and efficiently interact with objects. A distorted perceptual representation of the body size often represents a core diagnostic criterion for some psychopathological conditions. The metric representation of the body was shown to depend on somatosensory afferences: local deafferentation indeed causes a perceptual distortion of the size of the anesthetized body part. A specular effect can be induced by altering the cortical map of body parts in the primary somatosensory cortex. Indeed, the present study

Are different affordances subserved by different neural pathways?

This paper questions whether affordances are allied exclusively to dorsal stream processing within the visual system, or whether in fact different affordances are subserved by functionally independent neural pathways. Using case study evidence from patients with various visual pathologies, I argue that affordances can be categorised into type based upon their respective neurological underpinning. Such categorisation has implications for the extent to which affordances are consciously perceived or non-consciously 'picked up' within the optic array, as well as whether they indicate merely potent

Standard smokeless tobacco packaging: potential impact on perceived attractiveness, warning label visibility and harm perceptions among adults in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: In Bangladesh, smokeless tobacco (SLT) is available in a variety of pack shapes and sizes. Lack of standard packaging could limit compliance with pictorial health warning label (HWL) requirements. We explored Bangladeshi SLT users' and non-users' perceptions of a proposed standard pack shape for gul (tobacco powder) and zordha (chewing tobacco), including the role that HWL placement plays on harm perceptions. METHODS: We conducted 28 focus groups across three regions of Bangladesh: Dhaka, Sylhet and Khulna. Groups were stratified equally by urban/rural residence, gender and SLT us

Multiple levels of visual object constancy revealed by event-related fMRI of repetition priming.

We conducted two event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiments to investigate the neural substrates of visual object recognition in humans. We used a repetition-priming method with visual stimuli recurring at unpredictable intervals, either with the same appearance or with changes in size, viewpoint or exemplar. Lateral occipital and posterior inferior temporal cortex showed lower activity for repetitions of both real and non-sense objects; fusiform and left inferior frontal regions showed decreases for repetitions of only real objects. Repetition of different exemplar

A comparison of static and dynamic presentation procedures on discrimination learning of individuals with severe or moderate mental retardation.

A dynamic presentation of stimulus materials may be more effective than a static presentation. To test this hypothesis, we taught 16 individuals with moderate or severe mental retardation to identify two comparative discriminations (more, longer) by each of two different procedures. In the static, or traditional, presentation procedure the stimuli were positioned before a trial began and not manipulated by the experimenter during the trial. In the dynamic presentation procedure the individual watched the experimenter manipulate the relevant dimension of the stimuli during a series of trials. B

Comparative Evaluation of Caries Excavation Efficacy of Gentle Hand Bur System and Spoon Excavator in Primary Molars: A Randomized Controlled Study.

INTRODUCTION: Dental caries is a major global health concern, especially among children in low-income regions, where untreated cases can lead to pain, infection, and loss of function. To reduce treatment-related anxiety and discomfort, minimally invasive methods like atraumatic restorative treatment (ART), chemo-mechanical removal, and manual tools such as spoon excavators (SEs) have been developed. These techniques focus on preserving healthy dentin and avoiding the noise and vibration of the airotor handpiece. The Gentle Hand Bur System (GHBS) builds on this approach, offering a quiet, vibra

Exploring the anatomical encoding of voice with a mathematical model of the vocal system.

The faculty of language depends on the interplay between the production and perception of speech sounds. A relevant open question is whether the dimensions that organize voice perception in the brain are acoustical or depend on properties of the vocal system that produced it. One of the main empirical difficulties in answering this question is to generate sounds that vary along a continuum according to the anatomical properties the vocal apparatus that produced them. Here we use a mathematical model that offers the unique possibility of synthesizing vocal sounds by controlling a small set of a

The perception of peripersonal space in right and left brain damage hemiplegic patients.

Peripersonal space, as opposed to extrapersonal space, is the space that contains reachable objects and in which multisensory and sensorimotor integration is enhanced. Thus, the perception of peripersonal space requires combining information on the spatial properties of the environment with information on the current capacity to act. In support of this, recent studies have provided converging evidences that perceiving objects in peripersonal space activates a neural network overlapping with that subtending voluntary motor action and motor imagery. Other studies have also underlined the dominan

Individual differences impacting skin deformation and tactile discrimination with compliant elastic surfaces.

Individual differences in tactile acuity are observed within and between age cohorts. Such differences in acuity may be attributed to various sources, including aspects of nervous system, skin mechanics, finger size, cognitive and behavioral factors, etc. This work considers individual differences, within a younger cohort of participants, in discriminating compliant surfaces. These participants exhibit a range of finger size and stiffness. Interestingly, both their finger size and stiffness well predict their discriminative performance, where softer/smaller fingers outperform stiffer/larger fi

Chatting with AI: enhancing the supervision safety of near-L3 automated driving by engaging in non-driving-related tasks.

Current near-L3 automated driving systems still require continuous supervision, but prolonged supervision easily induces passive fatigue. This study examines whether non-driving-related tasks (NDRTs), especially chatting with AI, can improve drivers' cognitive state (cognitive load, sleepiness) and hazard perception during 15-minute supervision in daytime, suburban and low-traffic environments. The experiment compared a baseline condition with three NDRTs: listening to music, chatting with human, and chatting with AI. Results showed that all NDRTs increased cognitive load and reduced sleepines

Impact of tDCS and HD-tDCS on tinnitus perception: A scoping review.

Tinnitus is the auditory phantom perception of a sound that severely affects the quality of life of over 300,000 people in the United Kingdom alone. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a noninvasive brain stimulation tool, which has been investigated as a potential tinnitus management option since 2006. This study aimed to investigate the impact of tDCS and high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) on tinnitus perception. A scoping review was undertaken using the framework by Arksey and O'malley (2005). After consideration of relevance, 38 primary research

Effects of triploidization on light sensitivity in larval stage of Pacific bluefin tuna Thunnus orientalis.

Triploidization influences various biological characteristics of fish, which is associated with reductions in the number of multiple cell types in different tissues/organs. Our behavioral analyses revealed that triploid Pacific bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis) larvae exhibit lower sensitivity to light compared to diploids. Furthermore, histological analyses revealed a reduction in the number of ganglion cells and an increase in their size in the retinas of triploid T. orientalis larvae. Our findings provide the first evidence indicating that triploidization reduces sensory perception during t

Did She or Didn't She? Perceptions of Operative Status of Female Genitalia.

BACKGROUND: Although extensive research has explored why women undergo labiaplasty, little attention has been paid to societal and professional abilities to distinguish between altered and unaltered labia, impacting both patient concerns and broader societal perceptions. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of the general public and healthcare professionals in identifying labiaplasty and to pinpoint the misconceptions driving their perceptions. The goal was to inform more effective patient counseling strategies and challenge existing stigmas around cosmetic genital surgery.
